René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 – 29 December 1926)—better known as Rainer Maria Rilke (German: [ˈʁaɪnɐ maˈʁiːa ˈʁɪlkə])—was a Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist, "widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets", writing in both verse and highly lyrical prose. Several critics have described Rilke's work as inherently "mystical". His writings include one novel, several collections of poetry, and several volumes of correspondence in which he invokes haunting images that focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety. These deeply existential themes tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist writers.
Rilke was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, travelled extensively throughout Europe, including Russia, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, and in his later years settled in Switzerland—settings that were key to the genesis and inspiration for many of his poems. While Rilke is most known for his contributions to German literature, over 400 poems were originally written in French and dedicated to the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Among English-language readers, his best-known works include the poetry collections Duino Elegies (Duineser Elegien) and Sonnets to Orpheus (Die Sonette an Orpheus), the semi-autobiographical novel The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge (Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge), and a collection of ten letters that was published after his death under the title Letters to a Young Poet (Briefe an einen jungen Dichter). In the later 20th century, his work has found new audiences through its use by New Age theologians and self-help authors, and through frequent quoting in television programs, books and motion pictures. In the United States, Rilke remains among the more popular, best-selling poets.

Plot: Tethered to the netherworld of ghosts, muses, and dreams, a poet transforms his lament over the tragic death and loss of his friend and fellow artist into an epic work of literature. In 1908 Rainer Maria Rilke wrote his "Requiem For a Friend" over two dream-filled nights at the Hotel Biron in Paris. A hundred years later an experimental theatre group in Berkeley California prepares to stage his "Requiem" as an avante garde performance ritual. Time shifts to and fro as impressions of the contemporary era begin haunting Rilke's night dreams and consequently, inspiring the creative processes of writing his tribute to artist Paula Modersohn-Becker, who unexpectedly died eighteen days after birthing her first child. Part bio-pic and narrative fiction, "The Greater Circulation" is a cinematic treatment of Rilke's powerful prose addressing the central drama of all women who feel torn between sacrificing their lives to their Art or to Motherhood.

Genres: ,In this lecture, I discuss Rainer Maria Rilke's short but very rich work, Letters to a Young Poet, a series of ten deeply reflective letters Rilke writes over a roughly 5-year period to a younger man who is entering the military profession, but who aspires to be a poet. In the course of the Letters, Rilke articulates an understanding of personal development, advocating and describing what he calls "solitude," and cautioning against falling into "convention" or stifling one's growth by taking easy paths rather than undergoing the difficult growth that patience and time make possible. He ranges over a number of other topics, including Nature, Things, what poetry is and requires, what to make of sex, what love requires, childhood, time, and how to understand God. 2:20 - overview of the t...

Dichtung von Rainer Maria Rilke / Rezitation: Barbara Sukowa / Arrangement: Schönherz & Fleer / Nacht. O du in Tiefe gelöstes Gesicht an meinem Gesicht.

In this lecture, we look at the great Existentialist poet, Ranier Maria Rilke's, only novel, "The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge". We explore several of the main themes of the work: the meaning of one's own life, the purpose of writing, childhood and adulthood, time, death, God, emotion, and love. We finish where Rilke does, with his reworking on the Gospel parable of the prodigal son.
Vorgetragen vom Sprechgenie Oskar Werner.
( Rainer Maria Rilke, 6.11.1902, Paris )
Attack!!!!
We are one and many a driving force consuming the enemy
Vengeance is mine for the time when their foot shall slip
The day of tragedy is at hand
So their doom comes swiftly
Uncontained hatred rains like fire from the sky
The wind and the storms and the fire is on our side
They sow the wind and shall reap the whirlwind
Men will be annihilated and women will be raped
Temples are ablaze we set fire to your faith
Where are your gods the rock in which you took refuge
Who drank the blood the wine of your libations?
Now nothing more than a memory in a mouth of Ashes
The day of tragedy is at hand
So their doom comes swiftly
See now that I, even I am he I am the god to be
I hold my hand to the sky and command from the throne
As I live forever when I whet my flashing sword
And my hand takes hold on Judgement
I will have Vengeance
