Pop-up book

The term pop-up book is often applied to any three-dimensional or movable book, although properly the umbrella term movable book covers pop-ups, transformations, tunnel books, volvelles, flaps, pull-tabs, pop-outs, pull-downs, and more, each of which performs in a different manner. Also included, because they employ the same techniques, are three-dimensional greeting cards.

Pop-up types

Design and creation of such books in arts is sometimes called "paper engineering". This usage should not be confused with traditional paper engineering, the engineering of systems to mass-produce paper products.

The artistic aspect of paper engineering is related to origami in that the two arts both employ folded paper. However, origami in its simplest form doesn't use scissors or glue and tends to be made with very foldable paper; by contrast, pop-ups rely more on glue, cutting, and stiff card stock. What they have in common is folding.

Transformations

Transformations show a scene made up of vertical slats. When a reader pulls a tab on the side, the slats slide under and over one another to "transform" into a totally different scene. Ernest Nister, one of the early English children's book authors, often produced books solely of transformations. Many of these have been reproduced by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Matthew Reinhart

Matthew Christian Reinhart (born September 21, 1971) is an American writer and illustrator of children's pop-up books and picture books. His most recent books, including Star Wars: The Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy, Encyclopedia Mythologica: Fairies and Other Magical Creatures (with Robert Sabuda), and Brava, Strega Nona! (with Tomie DePaola and Robert Sabuda) have received much popular and critical acclaim.

Early life

Matthew Christian Reinhart was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Gary and Judith Reinhart. After Gary joined the U.S. Navy, Matthew and his younger sister, Erin, moved around the United States with their family, living in Florida, Texas, Illinois, California, Virginia and South Carolina. Art was an important part of Reinhart's life since childhood. He drew constantly, as drawing and making crafts were his favorite activities. After high school, however, Reinhart felt a career in art was unlikely, and biology at Clemson University in South Carolina in preparation for medical school. However, this did not satisfy him, and he took various art courses in addition to his required science courses in order to build up a portfolio. After graduation, he moved to New York City for a year before starting medical school. In New York, he met children’s book author Robert Sabuda, with whom Reinhart did volunteer work for a local community center. After Sabuda's book, Christmas Alphabet, was released to positive reviews, he convinced Reinhart to follow his true calling. The following year, Reinhart attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn as an industrial design major, concentrating in toy design, though his interests eventually evolved to paper engineering.

The Walking

The Walking is an avant-garde music/experimental film score studio album by Jane Siberry. The album was released on Reprise Records internationally, but remained on the independent label Duke Street Records in Canada. It is an excellent example of music that, on release, was panned by critics and largely spurned by the market, only to become a museum-quality art that has stood the test of time.

Critical reception

The album was initially poorly received by critics. It largely turned its back on the quirky new wave pop that Siberry had been known for; in its place was a surreal amalgam of progressive rock and Laurie Anderson-style performance art narratives, only one of which was shorter than six minutes.

Toronto progressive radio station CFNY, an early champion of Siberry's music, announced that it did not view any track on The Walking as viable for airplay on their station. Sales of the album were slow at first, although they improved when Siberry provided radio stations with a shorter edit of "Ingrid and the Footman".
