Paul Kelly (born Paolo Antonio Vaccarelli) was an Sicilian immigrant who founded the Five Points Gang in New York City after starting some brothels with prize monies earned in boxing. It was one of the last dominant street gangs in New York history; Kelly recruited young men who later became prominent criminals of the early 20th century, including Johnny Torrio, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Frankie Yale. Kelly was said to support election of Democratic Tammany Hall politicians with his gang's activities at elections.

SUNY Oswego history and anthropology major Rhiannon Peshniak challenges "Gangs of New York" and other literature/pop culture depicting New York City's Five Points neighborhood as inexorably dangerous and corrupt. She will present "Digging Up the Truth: An Archaeological Investigation and Comparison Debunking Manhattan's Most Notorious Slum, the Five Points" at 12:30 p.m. in Room 323 of the Campus Center during Quest on April 9. For more information, visit http://www.oswego.edu/quest. Video by HCI graduate student Phillip Moore.
New York's Five Points, the most notorious urban slum of the antebellum period, is seen through the conflicting perspectives of a native-born Protestant reformer and an immigrant Irish-Catholic family. Members of the Mulvahill family describe daily life in a complicated neighborhood, contradicting nineteenth-century stereotypes about the immigrant poor. (Length: 30 minutes)

About 400 AD, Augustine of Hippo attempted to syncretize Scripture with the fatalistic philosophy of Manicheanism. Augustine's blending of Pagan and Christian doctrines became the prevailing doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. Augustine is considered by some to be the Father of Roman Catholicism. Eleven hundred years later, John Calvin broke from some aspects of the Roman Church, but not from Augustine's teachings on God's sovereignty and man's salvation. Calvin's teachings sprang from Augustine's, and what was previously known as Augustinianism has subsequently become popularly known as Calvinism. Ever since Augustine, a debate has continued between his followers and those who hold to the pre-Augustine Biblical doctrine that God created humanity with real free will and, consequently...
A year alone: mistook the forest for the trees and a house for a home.
A wandering mind swept out the romance from under my feet.
Don't leave behind comfort and knowledge for clouded minds,
My soul's an olive tree and I'll be gnarled and twisted for centuries.
Is this my nature?
Have I a greater cause outside these senses and laws?
Barbed wire fences and all, you've staked me to five points.
My choice to break still remains.
We humbled ourselves in scenic sanctuaries and took our place in the cliff-rock face
to let god lay waste to whatever he may.
But we failed to see he's you and me, that corner of our brain we've yet to name.
Don't make it a big deal, these things will reveal themselves.
