George Carey (the much-garlanded former BBC man credited with founding Newsnight) has made many documentaries about Russia, the former Soviet Union and the Cold War. All three were at the heart of his fascinating Storyville: Masterspy of Moscow – George Blake (BBC Four), about the life of the notorious MI6 double agent who, having betrayed a large part of Britain’s Cold War spy network to the KGB, made a dramatic prison break from Wormwood Scrubs in 1966 and fled to exile in Russia.
Carey certainly knows how to hook a viewer, starting out with the moment he finally tracked down the now 92-year-old Blake at a snow-encrusted dacha outside Moscow. “And there he was. The spy who got away.”
With this tease firmly in place, we flipped back to the beginning, and the fact that George was born not in Britain but Rotterdam, the son of a Dutch protestant mother and a British-Egyptian father. Carey put Blake’s mix of ethnicity and religion, and early years disrupted and scarred by the death of his father and the Second World War, at the heart of his disloyalty. That, and a shadowy encounter with communist recruiters in war-torn North Korea after he was sent to that conflict zone by MI6. Blake emerged as a product of postwar global paranoia and skewed idealism.
Perhaps Carey’s most significant finding was that, despite being held responsible for the deaths of many agents, most of those Blake double-crossed appear to have survived – and apparently at Blake’s specific request. But that was hardly the point of this stately film. Rather we were left with an intense, almost nostalgic wondering at what all that and febrile Cold War spy activity achieved in the long run. Not for the global powers but for Blake himself, whose refusal – when we did meet him, finally – to talk about present day Russia and Vladimir Putin in particular, betrayed a keener sense of disillusion than words ever could.
Throughout the Cold War both sides sought intelligence about their opponents using spies, satellites and other means. For political reasons, scientists working on the Manhattan Project provided nuclear secrets to the Soviets. British agents George Blake and Kim Philby passed on to the Soviet Union the identities of Western intelligence assets, and the presence of the Berlin Tunnel. Conversely, Soviet Colonel Oleg Penkovsky gave the West vital details of Soviet nuclear vulnerabilities. Intelligence services are also used to silence dissent, in particular in East Germany. After the Cold War an investigation revealed the Soviet Union had been aware of a number of double agents operating in its midst from information provided by a CIA mole, Aldrich Ames. One such agent, Oleg Gordievsky, managed to flee the Soviet Union, but Adolf Tolkachev and Dmitri Polyakov were arrested, tried and executed. Interviewees include Markus Wolf, Ted Hall, Oleg Kalugin, George Blake, Yuri Modin and Aldrich Ames (who was serving a life sentence).

George Blake (born George Behar, 11 November 1922) is a former British spy known for having been a double agent in the service of the Soviet Union. Discovered in 1961 and sentenced to 42 years in prison, he escaped from Wormwood Scrubs prison in 1966 and fled to the USSR. He was not one of the Cambridge spies, although he is often grouped with them.
George Blake was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1922. Blake was the son of a Dutch mother and a Turkish/Jewish father who was a naturalized British subject. He was named George after King George V. His father, Albert Behar, fought against the Ottoman Empire in the First World War despite his origins in Constantinople (now Istanbul) and received awards from the French and British for his gallantry. The Behars lived a comfortable existence in Holland until Albert's death in 1936. The thirteen year-old George was sent to live with relatives in Egypt, where he continued his education at the English School in Cairo. While in Cairo, he was close to his cousin Henri Curiel, who was later to become a prominent member of the Communist Party of Egypt. In 1991 Blake said that his encounter with Curiel, who was a decade older and already a communist, shaped his views in later life.

David Robert Joseph Beckham, OBE (born 2 May 1975) is an English association footballer who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy. He has played for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, Milan, and the England national team for which he holds the appearance record for an outfield player.
Beckham's career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 1992 aged 17. During his time there, United won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left Manchester United to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, where he remained for four seasons, clinching the La Liga championship in his final season with the club. In January 2007, it was announced that Beckham would leave Real Madrid for the Major League Soccer club Los Angeles Galaxy, signing a five-year contract with them on 1 July 2007. While a Galaxy player, he spent two loan spells in Italy with Milan in 2009 and 2010. On 20 November 2011, he joined an elite group of players to have won three league titles in three different countries, when Los Angeles won their third MLS Cup.

Esir olduğu süreçte İngiltere’nin Kore halkına karşı acımasız saldırılarına bizzat şahit oldu. Blake hapiste kaldığı süreçte yavaş yavaş ülkesine olan sempatisini kaybetti. Artık yanlış tarafta olduğunu düşünmeye başlamıştı. Ülkesine döndüğünde bir kahraman gibi karşılansa da, Blake’in artık İngiltere’ye hizmet etmek gibi bir düşüncesi kalmamıştı. MI6’da tekrar göreve başlayan ajan, kısa bir süre sonra Rus gizli servisi KGB ile iletişim kurdu. George Blake artık çift taraflı çalışan bir Rus ajanıydı. Çok gizli plan ve kritik bilgileri Rus tarafına iletmenin yanında, yüzlerce İngiliz ajanını da Ruslara ihbar ederek öldürülmelerine yol açtı. Blake’in çift taraflı ajanlık serüveni tam 9 sene sürdü. 1961’de yakalandı. Normal şartlarda maksimum 14 sene ceza alması gerekirken, davası 3’e bölündü ve toplamda 42 yıl ceza alıp Londra’da ki Wormwood hapishanesine gönderildi. Blake, tutukluluğu sırasında içerdeki mahkumlarla son derece iyi ilişkiler kurdu. Aldığı 42 yıllık mahkumiyet cezasını kabullenmiş gibi görünen George Blake, sadece 1.5 sene sonra “dikkat edilmesi gereken tutuklular” listesinden çıkartıldı. Hapishane şartlarında kendisine bazı özel izinler bile sağlanmıştı ve rahat rahat hareket edebiliyordu. Fakat Blake’in 42 senelik cezasını tamamlama niyeti yoktu. İçerde, kendisine kaçmasında yardımcı olacak 3 mahkumla tanıştı. Daha önce de aynı hapishanede kalmış olan bu tutuklular hapishanenin yerleşim planı hakkında oldukça tecrübeliydiler. Kaçışın detayları en ince ayrıntısına kadar planlandı. Hapishane duvarına en yakın yer D bloğuydu. Eğer ön kısımdaki demir pencereyi kesebilirse, 45 cm’lik boşluktan geçip hapishanenin çatısına ulaşabilirdi. Çatıdan da bahçeye geçip, 6 metrelik hapishane duvarından iple hazırladıkları merdivenle aşağıyax”x inecekti. Kaçış günü olarak Cumartesi, öğleden sonra saat 5-6 arası seçildi. O saatlerde gardiyanlar ve tutuklular için sinema gösterimi yapılıyordu. Sinema izlemeye gitmeyen 3 gardiyandan ikisi televizyon odasındaydı ve Blake’in kaçacağı pencereyi direkt olarak göremiyorlardı. Blake’in çıkacağı pencereyi görebilecek sadece 1 gardiyan vardı. Fakat Blake’i kaçarken görse dahi, alarm düğmesiyle arasındaki mesafe Blake’e bir kaç dakikalık kaçış süresi tanıyordu. Blake’in duvardan atlayacağı noktaya bir de kiralık araba getirildi. Kaçmadan bir gün önce planların çizildiği ve notların tutulduğu tüm kağıtlar yakıldı. Zaman gelmişti. Blake, planladıkları gibi pencere demirini kesti. Açtığı boşluktan, hapishanenin çatısına, ordan da bahçeye çıktı ve hapishane duvarındaki merdiveni kullanarak aşağı atladı. Atlarken el bileği kırıldı fakat kaçmayı başarmıştı. Kaçışın ardından bir süre arkadaşlarının ayarladığı güvenli evlerde kaldı. Blake artık dışarıdaydı, fakat henüz İngiltere’den çıkamamıştı. İlk planı yoğun bronzlaştırıcı krem ve solaryumla Arap vatandaşı kılığında ülkeden çıkmaktı. Ajanlık yıllarında aldığı Arapça eğitim sayesinde Arapça’da konuşabiliyordu fakat pasaport problemi yüzünden bu planından vazgeçti. Ardından, bir karavanda kendisi için hazırlanan gizli bir bölümde Doğu Almanya’ya, ordan da KGB’nin yardımıyla Rusya’ya ulaştı. George Blake, Rusya’da dai kahraman gibi karşılandı. George Carey (the much-garlanded former BBC man credited with founding Newsnight) has made many documentaries about Russia, the former Soviet Union and the Cold War. All three were at the heart of his fascinating Storyville: Masterspy of Moscow – George Blake (BBC Four), about the life of the notorious MI6 double agent who, having betrayed a large part of Britain’s Cold War spy network to the KGB, made a dramatic prison break from Wormwood Scrubs in 1966 and fled to exile in Russia.
Carey certainly knows how to hook a viewer, starting out with the moment he finally tracked down the now 92-year-old Blake at a snow-encrusted dacha outside Moscow. “And there he was. The spy who got away.”
With this tease firmly in place, we flipped back to the beginning, and the fact that George was born not in Britain but Rotterdam, the son of a Dutch protestant mother and a British-Egyptian father. Carey put Blake’s mix of ethnicity and religion, and early years disrupted and scarred by the death of his father and the Second World War, at the heart of his disloyalty. That, and a shadowy encounter with communist recruiters in war-torn North Korea after he was sent to that conflict zone by MI6. Blake emerged as a product of postwar global paranoia and skewed idealism.
Perhaps Carey’s most significant finding was that, despite being held responsible for the deaths of many agents, most of those Blake double-crossed appear to have survived – and apparently at Blake’s specific request. But that was hardly the point of this stately film. Rather we were left with an intense, almost nostalgic wondering at what all that and febrile Cold War spy activity achieved in the long run. Not for the global powers but for Blake himself, whose refusal – when we did meet him, finally – to talk about present day Russia and Vladimir Putin in particular, betrayed a keener sense of disillusion than words ever could.

After the Cold War an investigation revealed the Soviet Union had been aware of a number of double agents operating in its midst from information provided by a CIA mole, Aldrich Ames. One such agent, Oleg Gordievsky, managed to flee the Soviet Union, but Adolf Tolkachev and Dmitri Polyakov were arrested, tried and executed. Interviewees include Markus Wolf, Ted Hall, Oleg Kalugin, George Blake, Yuri Modin and Aldrich Ames (who was serving a life sentence).

Blake’in çıkacağı pencereyi görebilecek sadece 1 gardiyan vardı. Fakat Blake’i kaçarken görse dahi, alarm düğmesiyle arasındaki mesafe Blake’e bir kaç dakikalık kaçış süresi tanıyordu.
