The Faroe Islands (/ˈfɛəroʊ/; Faroese: Føroyar pronounced [ˈfœɹjaɹ]; Danish: Færøerne, pronounced [ˈfæɐ̯øːˀɐnə]) are an archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland, 320 kilometres (200 mi) north-northwest of Great Britain. The area is approximately 1,400 km2 (540 sq mi) with a 2015 population of 48,700. The islands are an autonomous country within the Danish kingdom.
Between 1035 and 1814, the Faroe Islands were part of the Kingdom of Norway. The 1814 Treaty of Kiel granted Denmark control over the islands, along with two other Norwegian regions: Greenland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing country within the Danish Realm since 1948. The Faroese have control of most domestic matters; areas that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defence, police, justice, currency and foreign affairs. The Faroe Islands have representation in the Nordic Council as members of the Danish delegation.

There’s not much agriculture in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago in the North Atlantic, roughly equidistant from Norway, Iceland, and Scotland. Aside from the sheep that freely roam the fjords and a few root vegetables, the Faroese have always relied on the surrounding sea as a source of fish, seabirds, and the pilot whales they slaughter in a hunt known as the grindadráp, or grind. "Grind,” which rhymes with wind, is Faroese for pilot whale, and can refer to the event of the whale slaughter, the whale meat, or the whales themselves. Hunting whales for food is a tradition as old as the islands have been inhabited. But in the past few decades, animal activists have taken issue with the grind, despite Faroese insistence that it is sustainable and humane. Motherboard visited the Faroe Isl...

Google Street View is finally coming to the Faroe Islands. For years, the Faroe Islands have been left without Google Street View. Taking matters into her own hands, Durita Andreassen from the Faroe Islands has spent recent months mapping out her beautiful home country using sheep equipped with solar-powered cameras, creating her very own Sheep View 360. Following the launch of her project, thousands of people urged Google to make the Faroe Islands a part of Google Street View, and their efforts have now proved fruitful. The Google Maps team has arrived in the Faroe Islands with one mission: to help the Faroe Islands create their own Street View. With the support of the Street View Camera Loan Program, the Faroese people are now equipped with a Street View Trekker and a fleet of ...

Guide to driving in the Faroe Islands: Exploring the Faroe Islands’ beautiful landscapes by car, campervan or motorcycle is a popular way to get around. Most islands are connected by an excellent infrastructure of roads, bridges and subsea tunnels, making it effortless to travel by car. Driving is on the right and most road signs follow inter-national standards. The use of seat belts is required. The speed limit is 50 km in the towns and villages and 80 km on the main roads. For cars with trailers, the speed limit is 50 kph and for caravans the speed limit is 70 kph. The consequences for speeding are severe. Parking in the towns of Klaksvík, Tórshavn, Runavík and the Airport is restricted. Parking discs must be displayed in the lower right hand corner of the front windscreen showing ...
Shot on September 3, 2008. The video begins as we sail into Torshavn, Faroe Islands. We pass our sister ship the Royal Princess on our way into port. After disembarking the ship our tour begins as we transit the beautiful fjords between the islands. Waterfalls too numerous to mention cascade down the mountains. Our first stop is in a small village near the Vagar Sea Tunnel. While there I visited the fish ladder and admired the scenic view out the fjord. Our next stop was the village of Sandavágur which lies on the south coast of the Faroese island of Vágar, and has been voted the most well-kept village in the Faroes. While there I visited the The beautiful red-roofed Church which was built in 1917. We then returned to Torshavn by a scenic mountain road with nice views of the fjord and the ...

Director: Mike Day Small fishing communities of the Faroe Islands, an isolated Nordic archipelago in the North Atlantic, endure an uneasy period of transition as disparate global pressures—including animal rights activism, plummeting wildlife populations and mercury crawling up the ocean food chain—threaten traditional hunting and fishing practices. Graphic hunting scenes in this vivid documentary are interspersed with portraits of irascible community members who are resistant to change, all amid a landscape of eerie, solitary beauty.

Subscribe Now: http://bit.ly/2bmIwuf Welcome to the Faroe Islands! The Faroe Islands in Danish means the Islands of the Sheep, and you will see why! It’s located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles off the coast of Northern Europe, between Norway and Iceland. The first people to colonize the islands were Norwegians about 1,200 years ago and it become a major Viking settlement in that time. Its main industries are fishing and tourism - people come to experience its natural beauty, incredible bird life and delicious Faroese gastronomy. First up is Gasadalur, which for a long time it was the most isolated town in the Faroe Islands. It’s a very popular town to hike to because of its natural scenery and its cliff views. In 2006 they opened a tunnel to make the town mor...

But out there, where fear brought me to my knees as I staggered over the rocks, finally found time to face the question: what does it mean to die. The Faroe Islands, in the harsh north Atlantic, between Scotland and Iceland, are part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The diverse community of around 50,000 people has traditions dating back centuries and a remarkably low crime rate. Yet the Faroese are often called the last barbarians of Europe. Recent pictures of their bloody custom, the slaughter of pilot whales, went viral on the internet and in the media. Seeing marine mammals being killed and hacked into pieces while children play in the blood-red waters shocked the global community and sparked controversy. Animal activists enlisted celebrities to support a campaign against the killing of pilot whales. Unmoved, the Faroese are determined to continue their tradition and devise ever new weapons for killing the "grinds", insisting that it's...
Mykines is a “bird paradise” and home to thousands of migratory seabirds during the summer months. One of these residents is the puffin, a delightful creature and one of the islands main attractions. Its brightly coloured bill and its willingness to remain posed with fish in its beak, makes the puffin the ideal photo opportunity for any budding ornithologist. The splendid hiking on Mykines complements the bird watching beautifully, with stunning vistas to be had from the many vantage points.
