George Meeker (March 5, 1904 – August 19, 1984) was an American character movie and Broadway actor who became more of a legend off-camera than on. Meeker made several movies such as Crime, Inc. (1945) and Thief in the Dark (1928), and he played an uncredited part in All Through the Night (1941).
Meeker has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Michael Shayne is a fictional private detective character created during the late 1930s by writer Brett Halliday. The character appeared in a series of seven films starring Lloyd Nolan for Twentieth Century Fox, four films from the low-budget Producers Releasing Corporation with Hugh Beaumont, a radio series under a variety of titles between 1944 and 1953, and later in 1960–1961 in a 32-episode NBC television series starring Richard Denning in the title role.
Shayne debuted in the novel Dividend on Death first published in 1939, written by Halliday, a pseudonym of Davis Dresser. Dresser wrote fifty Shayne novels. Twenty seven more were written by a variety of ghost-writers for a total of 77; 300 short stories, a dozen films, radio and television shows, and a few comic book appearances have included the character.
The books were typically very well plotted, with Shayne always gathering the suspects at the end and explaining the crime and naming the murderer. Shayne was initially married in the novels, his wife being Phyllis Shayne, who was a somewhat limited character, and was often out of town. Dresser "killed her off" when he sold the movie rights to the series. In the book Blood on the Black Market, the comedy aspect of the earlier novels disappears, and Shayne is forced to deal with his wife's death.
Elmer Clifton (March 14, 1890 – October 15, 1949) was an American writer, director, and actor from the early silent days. A collaborator of D.W. Griffith, he appeared in The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916) before giving up acting in 1917 to concentrate on work behind the camera, with Griffith and Joseph Henabery as his mentors. His first feature-length solo effort as a director was The Flame of Youth with Jack Mulhall.
Clifton honed his talents during the late 1910s, directing vehicles for Mulhall and Herbert Rawlinson at Universal and then for Dorothy Gish for Famous Players-Lasky. Two of his projects with Gish, Nobody Home and Nugget Nell, featured performances from pre-stardom Rudolph Valentino. Most of this early output has been lost. He was the first filmmaker to discover the talents of Clara Bow, whom he cast in Down to the Sea in Ships, released on March 4, 1923. The independently produced film was well reviewed for its visual authenticity.
During the 1920s, Clifton directed films for several different studios. During the filming of The Warrens of Virginia (1924) for Fox Film Corporation, lead actress Martha Mansfield suffered a fatal accident from burns when her costume caught fire. Clifton directed The Wreck of the Hesperus for Cecil B. deMille's production company, and filmed on location in the Grand Canyon for The Bride of the Colorado. He also directed some Technicolor short films, including Manchu Love with an all-Asian cast.
Seven Doors to Death is a 1944 American film directed by Elmer Clifton.
The film is also known as Vanishing Corpses (American reissue title).

"A smart guy could clean up in a racket like this." So says Eddie Condon (Kane Richmond), a smooth-talking hood who sells unwanted babies to childless rich couples. Teaming up with a broken-down sawbones (Ralph Morgan) and a silver-tongued shyster (George Meeker), Condon operates a private maternity home where he rakes in the dough until a pre-paid baby is stillborn. Intent on keeping the cash, he hands over his sister-in-law’s newborn instead, a baby-switching scheme that soon gives way to frame-ups, fallouts and murder. The type of film the majors would avoid lest it harm their mainstream reputation, Black Market Babies is a prime example of the controversial programmers only a B-movie studio like Monogram Pictures could make. Bill Simmons has been out of ESPN for two years, but couldn’t help himself when asked what advice he has for his former employer. In an interview at our Code Conference, Simmons said ESPN’s current problems can be traced to a leadership vacuum that emerged after the company’s business chief, George Bodenheimer, left at the end of 2011. While former content chief John Skipper took over for Bodenheimer in title, the business side has in reality been run by a committee, Simmons claimed. “When you lose your closer and a team says we have all these set-up guys ... it never works and I think that’s what they did,” he said, using a baseball analogy to make his point. Simmons also said ESPN should have had a presence in Silicon Valley. “The other mistake they made, they had to realize they wer...

Born 1920 in Minneapolis Ralph Meeker was a supremely talented, highly rated, but grossly under-utilized performer of stage, screen and television. With well over 100 credits to his name, he was able to offer a wide variety of performances from tough private eye Mike Hammer in “Kiss Me Deadly” to the witty romantic lead in “The Fuzzy Pink Nightgown”. Mr. Meeker passed from a heart attack in 1988. This tribute contains only a small sampling of his shining performances. Please enjoy!
