Pyongyang (/ˈpjɒŋˈjæŋ/; (Chosŏn'gŭl: 평양; hancha: 平壤), Korean pronunciation: [pʰjʌŋjaŋ], literally: "Flat Land" or "Peaceful Land", approved: P’yŏngyang; several variants) is the capital of North Korea and the largest city in the country. Pyongyang is located on the Taedong River and, according to preliminary results from the 2008 population census, has a population of 3,255,388. The city was split from the South Pyongan province in 1946. It is administered as a directly governed city (chikhalsi, 직할시) on the same level as provincial governments, not a special city (teukbyeolsi, 특별시) as Seoul in South Korea.
"Pyongyang" literally means "Flat Land" in Korean. One of Pyongyang's many historic names is Ryugyong (류경; 柳京), or "capital of willows", as willow trees have always been numerous throughout the city's history; this served as an inspiration for many poems. Even today, the city has numerous willow trees, with many buildings and places having "Ryugyŏng" in their names. The most notable of these is the incomplete Ryugyong Hotel. The city's other historic names include Kisong, Hwangsong, Rakrang, Sŏgyong, Sodo, Hogyong, Changan, and Heijo (during Japanese rule in Korea). During the early 20th century, Pyongyang came to be known among missionaries as being the "Jerusalem of the East", due to its historical status as a stronghold of Christianity, namely Protestantism.
There are 32 floors in the Koryo Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea. Many, if not most, of them are empty and pitch black. Let's go check them out!

The arrival of the Kim Jong-un era in North Korea has coincided with measures to improve people's livelihood. From entertainment to fashion, North Korea is gradually entering the 21st century. On this Pyongyang summer night, the colorful lights of the Changjon Apartment Complex overshadow the moon and the stars overhead. Changjon is more than a city landmark. It embodies the start of a new urban trend. At the beginning of 2013, a year after the complex opened, North Korea's first 24-hour cafe debuted in Pyongyang. When evening arrives so do families who come to share a meal and young adults enjoying a date. There are foreign exchange students and groups of female friends dressed fashionably in luxury wear, here to chat and enjoy western fare. Anne HuFTV News ChiefIt costs 450 North Korean

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held its first ever beer festival in the capital Pyongyang on Friday drawing more than 800 residents, tourists, and foreign guests. The opening ceremony began at 19:00 on the pier of the Taedong River, one of Pyongyang's most famous landmarks, with performances, and free beer served for the visitors. The fried chicken and beer combo remained the favorite of the evening crowd. The event, which will last for about 20 days, is reportedly held to promote Taedonggang beer, Pyongyang's own brew and the most popular brand of beer in the country. The beer, named after the Taedong River that runs through the capital is a full-bodied lager a little on the sweet side, with a slightly bitter aftertaste. "It is great. This is one of the best be...

An informative travel log from a visit to the most isolated country in the world, including a review of food and accommodation.
North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s. "Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture. * Third World Indie Film Festival 2013 (San Francisco, USA)...

North Korea attempted to launch another intermediate-range ballistic missile on Saturday, according to the Pentagon. Both the US and South Korea condemned the launch of the rocket, which reportedly failed immediately after lift-off. US Strategic Command announced that its monitoring systems detected the launch in northwestern North Korea on Saturday at 12:03pm local time. The rocket was presumed to be a Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missile, and failed immediately after launch, the statement added, while emphasizing that the projectile never posed a threat to the US.
