North Korea is ruled by an oppressive and often violent communist regime. The region is best known for countless human rights violations, a brutal response to any dissidents of the reigning Kim Jong-un-led government, extremely restrictive conditions and a dramatic disparity between the wealthy elite class and the impoverished majority of citizens. This identity lives on through those who were able to successfully evacuate the country and through international experts, most of whom have limited access thanks to a rigid foreign policy that allows these atrocities to continue through their relative isolation.
Yet, many people view North Korea as a strange, perplexing and often ludicrous curiosity, reacting to the mysterious dictatorship more with bemusement than outrage. And surely enough, the comic material is plentiful. The deluded Jong-un is an unknown entity with an oddball haircut and his deceased father Kim Jong-Il was an embellishment-prone narcissist, having been known to claim he was a world-class golfer and a global fashion icon. Through its dictatorial regime, the country has set overbearing and often hypocritical rules to lord over its citizens, typically enforced in a harsh, aggressive manner.
Fascination and amusement at the expense of what is known as the Hermit State has even extended into pop culture. 30 Rock satirized Jong-Il’s penchant for exaggerating – or outright making up - his own achievements and the ‘truths’ of the country’s state-run media. The Interview depicted Seth Rogen and James Franco embarking upon a mission to assassinate Jong-un but never reached theaters partially in response to alleged threats by North Korea. The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation.
Indeed, separating fact from fiction in North Korea is not easy to do. The shrouded-in-mystery state offers plenty of misinformation through its state-run media and allows for precious few outsiders to provide an unbiased perspective, thanks to an effort by the isolated country’s leaders to block information from entering or exiting the country. Instead, we are left with unsubstantiated but oft-repeated rumors, like Jong-un feeding his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, to 120 starving dogs.
Thus, any examination of North Korea can only be facilitated through piecing together various bits of factual information that emerge occasionally from the country. Reports from international human rights organizations like the United Nations, infrequent accounts from international news outlets and a scattering of stories from those who have successfully left the country have helped form a rough idea of how the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) operates. It is through these narratives and perspectives that a basic understanding of North Korea is formed. With that in mind, let’s take a glimpse inside this confounding place and examine some of the craziest-but-true facts about it.

There are 27,000 North Korean defectors who escaped life threatening dangers. They came to the South with big hopes but were discouraged due to language barriers. They were discriminated against and ignored mostly because of their unfamiliar accents and vocabulary. As a result, young North Korean defectors had a hard time adjusting to new schools. We believed reunification of the two Koreas would be possible only when these young defectors receive a good education. So we created the South Korean-North Korean translator to restore their hope in the future.

RT takes an exclusive look at North Korea, the world’s most closed-off country. Life here is isolated from the outside world and every aspect of existence is regulated by order of the "Great Leader", from the art you’re allowed to see, the books you can read, even to your hairstyle.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is perhaps the least known country in the world today. Based on a political ideology known as ‘Juche’, the socialist government controls every source of information and the national leader, Kim Jong-un, preserves the peace and defends the state’s historical, spiritual and cultural heritage. It’s hard to overestimate the Commander-in-chief’s role in the country: his likeness adorns the streets and squares in every city and village. Through official portraits and statues, he is, literally, everywhere and kindergarten children are taught to sing his praises. Locals adore Kim Jong-un and consider him the Father of the Nation, he encourages everyone to be patriotic and surpass all other nations.
Almost 15% of North Korea’s GDP is reserved for military spending, and long after the Korean War of the 1950s, the country has still not signed a peace treaty with its capitalist southern neighbor. As a result, thousands of families were torn apart by the political divide. The army remains a source of inspiration; it determinates the social structure and stimulates ordinary people to devote their lives to work in the faithful service of the Marshal. The people believe that this military ideology consolidates national spirit and guarantees stability and order.
However, not even tough military methods and an ideological barrier around the country can solve the economic lag or the enormous social and economic gulf between South and North Korea. Self-reliance and self-sufficiency are in stark contrast to the economic reality. Despite developments in labour cooperation, a demilitarized zone, demarcated by a huge wall between the two states, is still amongst the most heavily armed areas in the world.
President of the Korean Friendship Association, Alejandro Cao de Benos explains that due to the generally accepted ideology of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the people will never understand nor accept a western mind-set. From childhood, they are taught to be loyal to their leader and to beware of western values.
For most viewers North Korea remains a mystery but this unique film offers a limited window of opportunity to view Korean lifestyle through the prism of North Korean peoples’ every day cares and joys. RT Doc meets ordinary workers and soldiers to hear first hand, how they lived before being isolated from the whole world.

In the early-20th century, after Korea enjoyed a short period of independence, the country endured the Russo-Japanese War over control of the area. Finally, in 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan. However, by the end of World War II – when a defeated Japan ceded power over Korea to the Allies – tensions had risen between the Soviet and Chinese Communist-backed Northern section and the United States-supported Southern half. When a resolution was not found by 1948, the country was officially split along the 38th parallel, creating the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – or DPRK – in the north and the Republic of Korea in the south. Residual friction and the existing Cold War resulted in the beginning of the Korean War on June 25th, 1950. Since the war’s cease fire in 1953, South Korea has evolved into a more liberal and democratic nation, while North Korea is generally considered to be ruled via dictatorship, with control passed down from generation to generation.

Culture of Korea
The traditional culture of Korea refers to the shared cultural heritage of the Korean Peninsula. Since the mid-20th century, the peninsula has been split politically between North and South Korea, resulting in a number of cultural differences. Before Joseon Dynasty, the practice of Korean shamanism was deeply rooted in the Korean culture.

Dance
As with music, there is a distinction between court dance and folk dance. Common court dances are jeongjaemu (정재무) performed at banquets, and ilmu (일무), performed at Korean Confucian rituals. Jeongjaemu is divided into native dances (향악정재, hyangak jeongjae) and forms imported from Central Asia and China (당악정재, dangak jeongjae). Ilmu are divided into civil dance (문무, munmu) and military dance (무무, mumu). Many mask dramas and mask dances are performed in many regional areas of Korea. The traditional clothing is the genja, it is a special kind of dress that women wear on festivals. It is pink with multiple symbols around the neck area.

listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
Etymology
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.

Korea, called Chosŏn (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮) in North Korea and Hanguk (Korean: 한국; Hanja: 韓國) or Daehanminkuk (Korean: 대한민국; Hanja: 大韓民國) in South Korea, is an East Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states: North Korea, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan .
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.

Through its dictatorial regime, the country has set overbearing and often hypocritical rules to lord over its citizens, typically enforced in a harsh, aggressive manner. Fascination and amusement at the expense of what is known as the Hermit State has even extended into pop culture. 30 Rock satirized Jong-Il’s penchant for exaggerating – or outright making up - his own achievements and the ‘truths’ of the country’s state-run media. The Interview depicted Seth Rogen and James Franco embarking upon a mission to assassinate Jong-un but never reached theaters partially in response to alleged threats by North Korea. The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation. Indeed, separating fact from fiction in North Korea is not easy to do. The shrouded-in-mystery state offers plenty of misinformation through its state-run media and allows for precious few outsiders to provide an unbiased perspective, thanks to an effort by the isolated country’s leaders to block information from entering or exiting the country. Instead, we are left with unsubstantiated but oft-repeated rumors, like Jong-un feeding his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, to 120 starving dogs. Thus, any examination of North Korea can only be facilitated through piecing together various bits of factual information that emerge occasionally from the country. Reports from international human rights organizations like the United Nations, infrequent accounts from international news outlets and a scattering of stories from those who have successfully left the country have helped form a rough idea of how the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) operates. It is through these narratives and perspectives that a basic understanding of North Korea is formed. Life here is isolated from the outside world and every aspect of existence is regulated by order of the "Great Leader", from the art you’re allowed to see, the books you can read, even to your hairstyle. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is perhaps the least known country in the world today. Based on a political ideology known as ‘Juche’, the socialist government controls every source of information and the national leader, Kim Jong-un, preserves the peace and defends the state’s historical, spiritual and cultural heritage. It’s hard to overestimate the Commander-in-chief’s role in the country: his likeness adorns the streets and squares in every city and village. Through official portraits and statues, he is, literally, everywhere and kindergarten children are taught to sing his praises. Locals adore Kim Jong-un and consider him the Father of the Nation, he encourages everyone to be patriotic and surpass all other nations. Almost 15% of North Korea’s GDP is reserved for military spending, and long after the Korean War of the 1950s, the country has still not signed a peace treaty with its capitalist southern neighbor. As a result, thousands of families were torn apart by the political divide. The army remains a source of inspiration; it determinates the social structure and stimulates ordinary people to devote their lives to work in the faithful service of the Marshal. The people believe that this military ideology consolidates national spirit and guarantees stability and order. However, not even tough military methods and an ideological barrier around the country can solve the economic lag or the enormous social and economic gulf between South and North Korea. Self-reliance and self-sufficiency are in stark contrast to the economic reality. Despite developments in labour cooperation, a demilitarized zone, demarcated by a huge wall between the two states, is still amongst the most heavily armed areas in the world. President of the Korean Friendship Association, Alejandro Cao de Benos explains that due to the generally accepted ideology of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the people will never understand nor accept a western mind-set. From childhood, they are taught to be loyal to their leader and to beware of western values. For most viewers North Korea remains a mystery but this unique film offers a limited window of opportunity to view Korean lifestyle through the prism of North Korean peoples’ every day cares and joys. North Korea is ruled by an oppressive and often violent communist regime. The region is best known for countless human rights violations, a brutal response to any dissidents of the reigning Kim Jong-un-led government, extremely restrictive conditions and a dramatic disparity between the wealthy elite class and the impoverished majority of citizens. This identity lives on through those who were able to successfully evacuate the country and through international experts, most of whom have limited access thanks to a rigid foreign policy that allows these atrocities to continue through their relative isolation.
Yet, many people view North Korea as a strange, perplexing and often ludicrous curiosity, reacting to the mysterious dictatorship more with bemusement than outrage. And surely enough, the comic material is plentiful. The deluded Jong-un is an unknown entity with an oddball haircut and his deceased father Kim Jong-Il was an embellishment-prone narcissist, having been known to claim he was a world-class golfer and a global fashion icon. Through its dictatorial regime, the country has set overbearing and often hypocritical rules to lord over its citizens, typically enforced in a harsh, aggressive manner.
Fascination and amusement at the expense of what is known as the Hermit State has even extended into pop culture. 30 Rock satirized Jong-Il’s penchant for exaggerating – or outright making up - his own achievements and the ‘truths’ of the country’s state-run media. The Interview depicted Seth Rogen and James Franco embarking upon a mission to assassinate Jong-un but never reached theaters partially in response to alleged threats by North Korea. The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation.

There are 27,000 North Korean defectors who escaped life threatening dangers. They came to the South with big hopes but were discouraged due to language barriers. They were discriminated against and ignored mostly because of their unfamiliar accents and vocabulary. As a result, young North Korean defectors had a hard time adjusting to new schools. We believed reunification of the two Koreas would be possible only when these young defectors receive a good education. So we created the South Korean-North Korean translator to restore their hope in the future.

RT takes an exclusive look at North Korea, the world’s most closed-off country. Life here is isolated from the outside world and every aspect of existence is regulated by order of the "Great Leader", from the art you’re allowed to see, the books you can read, even to your hairstyle.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is perhaps the least known country in the world today. Based on a political ideology known as ‘Juche’, the socialist government controls every source of information and the national leader, Kim Jong-un, preserves the peace and defends the state’s historical, spiritual and cultural heritage. It’s hard to overestimate the Commander-in-chief’s role in the country: his likeness adorns the streets and squares in every city and village. Through official portraits and statues, he is, literally, everywhere and kindergarten children are taught to sing his praises. Locals adore Kim Jong-un and consider him the Father of the Nation, he encourages everyone to be patriotic and surpass all other nations.
Almost 15% of North Korea’s GDP is reserved for military spending, and long after the Korean War of the 1950s, the country has still not signed a peace treaty with its capitalist southern neighbor. As a result, thousands of families were torn apart by the political divide. The army remains a source of inspiration; it determinates the social structure and stimulates ordinary people to devote their lives to work in the faithful service of the Marshal. The people believe that this military ideology consolidates national spirit and guarantees stability and order.
However, not even tough military methods and an ideological barrier around the country can solve the economic lag or the enormous social and economic gulf between South and North Korea. Self-reliance and self-sufficiency are in stark contrast to the economic reality. Despite developments in labour cooperation, a demilitarized zone, demarcated by a huge wall between the two states, is still amongst the most heavily armed areas in the world.
President of the Korean Friendship Association, Alejandro Cao de Benos explains that due to the generally accepted ideology of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the people will never understand nor accept a western mind-set. From childhood, they are taught to be loyal to their leader and to beware of western values.
For most viewers North Korea remains a mystery but this unique film offers a limited window of opportunity to view Korean lifestyle through the prism of North Korean peoples’ every day cares and joys. RT Doc meets ordinary workers and soldiers to hear first hand, how they lived before being isolated from the whole world.

In the early-20th century, after Korea enjoyed a short period of independence, the country endured the Russo-Japanese War over control of the area. Finally, in 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan. However, by the end of World War II – when a defeated Japan ceded power over Korea to the Allies – tensions had risen between the Soviet and Chinese Communist-backed Northern section and the United States-supported Southern half. When a resolution was not found by 1948, the country was officially split along the 38th parallel, creating the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – or DPRK – in the north and the Republic of Korea in the south. Residual friction and the existing Cold War resulted in the beginning of the Korean War on June 25th, 1950. Since the war’s cease fire in 1953, South Korea has evolved into a more liberal and democratic nation, while North Korea is generally considered to be ruled via dictatorship, with control passed down from generation to generation.

To many Americans, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a mythic anti-Shangri-La assembled from stereotypes, a police state modeled on images from works like 1984 and any number of Hollywood films (which have regularly used North Korea as an easy source of villainy after the collapse of the Soviet Union). Meanwhile, Kim Jong-il has become an icon more easily recognized than many American political figures. High school students recognize the Dear Leader's trademark hairstyle, they joke about his taste in films, and they turn him into a caricature of evil-all without knowing anything significant about North Korea or its history. North Korea periodically makes the TV news for its nuclear threat, its lack of cooperation in peaceful efforts at reunifying the Korean peninsula, and for its ongoing droughts and famines. But despite the apparent coverage, the DPRK has been the real "Hermit Kingdom" in modern times.
Recently, with the New York Philharmonic's visit, there has been a dramatic turn in American media coverage of the DPRK. The visit to Pyongyang not only made major headlines, but was also the subject of a special documentary by Christiane Amanpour, CNN's chief international correspondent, who was even permitted a visit to the Youngbyun nuclear plant according to her strikingly friendly special report. In early July of this year, George Bush announced his intention to take North Korea off the notorious "Axis of Evil" list and, eventually, to permit trade without the stigma of "doing business with the enemy." Such public gestures suggest a significant change in the U.S. attitude toward the DPRK.
When I began gathering materials for this special section of Azalea, I started by looking for materials on North Korea that were available to the general public outside academic and political circles. There was much more than I imagined, including numerous texts and films available on the Internet. My main challenge was in formulating a logic for selecting from wide-ranging sources in order to present a sort of North Korea collage. I wanted the materials to speak for themselves to specialists and nonspecialists alike, without any overt rhetoric on my part. I also wanted to present a spectrum of texts that would permit a reader to get a sense of the texture of what the DPRK must be like. I drew from both internal and external sources, that is to say, from texts by North Koreans as well as those from outside.
The following pages begin with an excerpt from Guy Delisle's comic book memoir, Pyongyang, which in its minimalist style presents a remarkably accurate sense of the bleak atmosphere of the city-far more successfully than any film or photographs I have seen. Pyongyang has unfortunately been relegated to comic book and graphic novel readers, but it deserves a wider audience for its unexpected and surprising glimpses into North Korean culture. The photographs in this section, which provide a real-life counterpoint to the comic book images, were taken by Peter Sobolev, a Russian computer engineer, during his visit to North Korea in May of 2004.

The following pages begin with an excerpt from Guy Delisle's comic book memoir, Pyongyang, which in its minimalist style presents a remarkably accurate sense of the bleak atmosphere of the city-far more successfully than any film or photographs I have seen. Pyongyang has unfortunately been relegated to comic book and graphic novel readers, but it deserves a wider audience for its unexpected and surprising glimpses into North Korean culture. The photographs in this section, which provide a real-life counterpoint to the comic book images, were taken by Peter Sobolev, a Russian computer engineer, during his visit to North Korea in May of 2004.
