Max Hattler is a German video artist and experimental filmmaker. He created the kaleidoscopic political short films "Collision" (2005) and "Spin" (2010), abstract stop motion works "Shift" (2012) and "AANAATT" (2008), and psychedelic animation loops "Sync", "1923 aka Heaven" and "1925 aka Hell" (2010).
Max Hattler was born in Ulm, Germany. He is the son of Hellmut Hattler, a German bass player mainly known for his Krautrock band Kraan. Max Hattler holds a BA from Goldsmiths (2001), a Master of Arts in Animation from the Royal College of Art (2005) and a Doctorate in Fine Art from the University of East London (2014). He is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.
Hattler's work has been described in the following terms: "Max Hattler works on the thin line between abstraction and figuration, being able sometimes to create powerful political statements while eschewing the traditional constraints of narrative, choosing a poetics of implication over the mere construction of a discourse."

Sync "is based on the idea that there is an underlying unchanging synchronisation at the centre of everything; a sync that was decided at the very beginning of time. Everything follows from it, everything is ruled by it: all time, all physics, all life. And all animation." (Max Hattler, 2011, 'Sync: Circular Adventures in Animation' in Virginie Selavy (ed.) The various elements move within this three dimensional space, like parts of a dynamic painting that condenses a whole series of references to contemporary art: from the constructivism of Moholy-Nagy, to the historic abstracts of Mondrian and Klee, and on to the more recent experience of conceptual and kinetic art. The Filling Station at Kings Cross was the venue for a commission from moving image artist Max Hattler. The commission was sponsored by Vauxhall as part of their Ampera Season. LCI provided a 30m wide water screen, on London's Regents Canal, for the duration of the event, over eleven nights, which ran three times every evening. This video gives you not only a fine example Max Hattler's work, but a behind the scenes look at LCI setting up the water screen, a truly innovative medium. 'Sync' by Max Hattler for Time, what makes us tick?- part of the Open Mind series of Pavlov E-Lab. Music by Dennis van Tilburg. Max Hattler: I decided to portray ‚ in an abstracted manner‚ the whole universe (its time scales) on ONE huge disk that is rotating at the same speed throughout (it rotates at 7400 degrees per second!). the camera is zooming out continuously from the centre of the disk (the beginning of time, the big bang) until the whole disk is in view (the here and now, current age of the universe). It means there is an underlying unchanging speed that rules everything...
My film is about mirroring and feedback— abstract patterns and shapes fill the two sides of the screen, taking us on a journey from disharmony to peace. Conceptually, it's about how violence breeds violence and love breeds love. Only by turning the other cheek can we bring about change, understanding and peace.
