Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit is Canon Inc.'s name for a family of signal processing and control units for digital cameras and camcorders. DIGIC units are used as image processors by Canon in its own digital imagery products. Several generations of DIGICs exist, and are distinguished by a version number suffix.
Currently, DIGIC is implemented as an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed to perform high speed signal processing as well as the control operations in the product in which it has been incorporated. Over its numerous generations, DIGIC has evolved from a system involving a number of discrete integrated circuits to a single chip system, many of which are based around the ARM instruction set. Custom firmware for these units have been developed to add features to the cameras.
The original DIGIC was used on the PowerShot G3 (Sep 2002), Canon S1 IS (Mar 2004), A520 (Mar 2005), and other cameras. It consists of three separate chips: a video processing IC, an image processing IC and a camera control IC. .

The Canon EOS 7D is a professionalcropped sensor digital single-lens reflex camera made by Canon. It was announced on 1 September 2009 with a suggested retail price of US$1,699. Among its features are an 18.0 effective megapixel CMOS sensor, HD video recording, its 8.0 frames per second continuous shooting, new viewfinder which offers 1.0X magnification and 100% coverage, 19-point auto-focus system, movie mode, and built-in Speedlite transmitter.
The 7D remained in Canon's model lineup without replacement for slightly more than five years—the longest product cycle for any EOS camera. Its successor was the Canon EOS 7D Mark II, announced on 15 September 2014.
The Canon EOS 7D Mark II is a professionaldigital single-lens reflex camera made by Canon. It was announced on 15 September 2014 with a suggested retail price of US$1,799. Among its features are a 20.2 effective megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, HD video recording, its 10.0 frames per second continuous shooting, viewfinder which offers 1.0× magnification with a 50 mm lens and 100% coverage, 65-point auto-focus system, a built-in Speedlite transmitter, and a new metering sensor. It was preceded by the Canon EOS 7D.
The 7D Mark II was named the "Best Digital SLR Expert" in 2015 by the Technical Image Press Association.
An active-pixel sensor (APS) is an image sensor consisting of an integrated circuit containing an array of pixel sensors, each pixel containing a photodetector and an active amplifier. There are many types of active pixel sensors including the CMOS APS used most commonly in cell phone cameras, web cameras, most digital pocket cameras since 2010, and in most DSLRs. Such an image sensor is produced by a CMOS (and is hence also known as a CMOS sensor), and has emerged as an alternative to charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors.
The term active pixel sensor is also used to refer to the individual pixel sensor itself, as opposed to the image sensor; in that case the image sensor is sometimes called an active pixel sensor imager, or active-pixel image sensor.
The term active pixel sensor was coined in 1985 by Tsutomu Nakamura who worked on the Charge Modulation Device active pixel sensor at Olympus, and more broadly defined by Eric Fossum in a 1993 paper.
The DIGIC 6 Image Processor makes several important advancements, including improved sensitivity that allows for higher resolution with less noise when shooting in dark conditions. Dynamic IS now detects and compensates for tilt and parallel movement (shift blur) to create video that's exceptionally free of distortion. In addition, the DIGIC 6 Image Processor enables video recording in MP4 format. Highly compressed MP4 video not only preserves space on your memory card but also improves playback on mobile devices.
A week away from the official announcement we get some specs, rumored but likely true on two of the three pro level models coming soon.
