Skiing in Japan! Adventure. Excitement. Swedish Pirates: In the last few months of ski season my friend Ryotaro and I decided to travel to a prominent ski resort in north Japan. It was quite the trip with skiing, snowmobiles, ice fishing and a ridiculous rubber dinghy. Come along for the ride!

10. Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. It may not have the world’s best snow, but it does have some serious skiing, and the mighty Dolomiti Superski pass means you can take advantage of the links into the Sella Ronda and also the lovely hidden valley at Lagazuoi – possibly Europe’s most beautiful red run.
9. Murren, Switzerland. As not only is it a beautifully tranquil traffic-free village, linked into the superb Jungfrau ski area - which includes the longest downhill run in the world, the Lauberhorn – it also sits in the shadow of arguably the most imposing mountain face anywhere in the world.
8. Whistler, Canada. Whistler is awesome, epic, brilliant and a lesson in how to create a joined-up ski resort that works for every single level of skier. Just inland from Vancouver; Whistler gets struck by Pacific storms all winter, and while the snow isn’t as dry as some of the interior British Colombian resorts, it is abundant, and as good; if not better than most of the snow we get in Europe.
7. Telluride, Colorado, USA. The San Juan Mountains of Colorado are amongst the newest on the continent and as such are like a huge set of razor sharp dragon’s teeth, which makes for some of the best skiing in USA. Telluride has mile upon mile of perfect piste and masses of superb inbound hike-to terrain, backed up by a purpose-built mountain village and the very real and very cool original cowboy village which just makes you envisage that an old school shootout is about to start at any moment.
6. St Anton, Austria. After skiing in Austria is like nothing you’ll experience anywhere else, and while bad for every major organ of your body, it is great fun, if a little painful.
5. Zermatt, Switzerland. Zermatt and Verbier, are arguably Switzerland’s top resorts, but only Zermatt and the linked Italian resort of Cervinia have the Matterhorn as an awe-inspiring backdrop. Zermatt has world-class skiing, a good snow record and all the in-resort facilities you’d ever need.
4. Alyeska, Alaska, USA. A 33-year average snowfall of over 16 meters is enough to keep the pistes in pristine condition and the off piste fresh all season. The mountain here is quite open, with multiple black diamond chutes and wide exposed faces, while most of the trees are no go areas. Intermediate and beginners are well looked after, with plenty of groomed pistes on offer.
3. Riksgransen, Sweden. Riksgransen’s pistes aren’t necessarily the longest, but they are varied and the off piste is good too, but it’s the ski touring that stands out here as being world class. It really is true wilderness and you’re likely to meet a few reindeer if you leave the resort boundaries.
2. Meribel, France. Meribel got the vote over Courchevel and Val Thorens mainly because it’s the middle valley, making it super easy to ski in any of the 3 valleys without feeling rushed. Another bonus of Meribel is the fact that it’s been developed sympathetically, with low level chalet style development rather than high-rise apartments which spoil many a French mountainside.
1. Revelstoke, Canada. Revelstoke has the lot when it comes to on-mountain terrain, there’s steep and open powder faces, fantastic tree skiing, long well-maintained pistes, an adjacent cat-skiing operation and if that’s not enough then the ½ a million acres of heli-sking terrain should keep you happy.

LUXURY SKI RESORT in SWITZERLAND
I've jsut been swept off my feet by James Blunt. Sadly, not by the singer but by a chairlift named in his honour, 8,858ft up in the mountains above Verbier.
The Swiss ski resort is one of the world's finest and a favourite with celebrities such as Blunt, who likes it here so much he's opened La Vache, a lift station turned swish panoramic restaurant, which sits atop Attelas mountain. That's where I'm heading. With more than 248 miles of pistes, from leisurely blues to exhilarating blacks, which trail down from the highest point, Mont Fort, at 10,925ft, Verbier is not for the faint-hearted.
Even so, there's a real mix of people whooshing about, from graceful old-timers to whizz kids traversing challenging reds, cheered on by their excitable parents.
Just under two hours from Geneva, Verbier or the "city in the mountains" as it is fondly regarded by the Swiss, is small, pretty and easy to get around: everywhere is within walking distance.
Heidi-style chalets with pretty-wooden shutters and decorative balconies, line the pavements leading up from the main hub of the resort, Place Centrale, to Place Blanche, where the trendy new W hotel faces the foot of the slopes.
There are boutiques galore and as I discovered, it's best to leave the credit card back at the chalet.
Fancy a fur shawl, sheepskin-lined boots or a cashmere jumper? The sweet-tootched will also love confectionary shop Sweety-Swiss, where there's a pick and mix of every assortment and lollipops the size of badminton jackets.
I was staying with a group of friends in Amadouvier, only a five-minute walk from Medran (the main lift station), and close to the apres-ski bars; it's a five-bedroom property and one of 46 sumptuous chalets that Bramble Ski manages in the resort.
A few days here and you will never want to see a painted skirting board ever again: everything from the doors and staircase to floor is gloriously rustic, stripped back to a natural wood finish.
The living room cum dining area features vintage leather sofas scattered with colourful animal print cushions, enormous lamps with handcrafted driftwood bases and an earthy coloured tapestry hanging above a stone fireplace.
My spacious bedroom has a private balcony and king-size bed perfectly plump with goosedown pillows and duvet and the bathroom, twice the size of most ensuites, boasts a gigantic bath, separate waterfall shower and indulgent Acqua di Parma toiletries.
BRAMBLE Ski's in-chalet team of staff -- concierge Archie, hosts Jack and Camden, chef Max and ski concierge Zac -- all ensured our few days in Verbier were memorable.
From organising our ski equipment, personally delivered and fitted, to preparing fantastic cuisine including hearty breakfasts, afternoon tea with freshly-baked cakes and superb five-course dinners, they made sure we were spoilt rotten. Zac met us at the Medran lift each morning and guided us around the pistes. Switerland ski resort verbier He organised lunch stops on the mountain and, one afternoon after a busy day on the slopes, a massage. Sports therapist Lucy, from local company Massage 1936, transformed one of the chalet bedrooms into a serene treatment room, dreamy music included, and for 60 minutes I was pampered top to toe. Heaven!
As well as Mr Blunt's La Vache with its fun, Swiss mountain vibe and cow-themed décor, we ate at Le Carrefour (5,741ft), which has been serving skiers since 1950. This quirky cabin-style eatery oozes traditional Swiss charm.
Huge cowbells on leather straps hang along the wall and pretty heart-shaped trinkets decorate windows. The food is rather engaging, too. A must is the rump of beef, sizzling on a hot stone plate.
Another sizzling encounter is the après-ski and incessant nightlife. If you want a ski-in, ski-out après experience, the W hotel's On the Piste pop-up-bar, outside the chic new hotel, is a great spot and you don't even have to remove your skis to order a drink.

Started off at the top of the River Run Gondola and skied down Spring Dipper to the Montezuma Express Lift. The maze was empty after the first run and packed after the fourth run. Gotta get your turns in early if you want to do laps.

Killington Ski Resort
Killington Mountain Resort & Ski Area is a ski resort near Killington, Vermont. It is the largest ski area in the Eastern United States, and has the largest vertical drop in New England at 3,050 feet (930 meters). Starting in the 2013-2014 ski season, it was given the title "Beast of the East."
History
In 1954, Perry H. Merrill, the Father of Vermont's State Parks and Alpine Ski Areas and Vermont State land lease officer, wanted to see a ski resort developed on Killington Peak, the second highest mountain in Vermont. Preston Leete Smith agreed to work with him to develop this area. Killington opened December 13, 1958.
In the 1960s the resort continued to expand at a pace "well above industry standards." Many new trails were created and Smith had beginner trails accessible from every lift. In the 1960s, Killington installed snowmaking equipment, which had been invented in the 1950s, but was considered a banana belt luxury. Several low-snow seasons proved their value.
Killington introduced the ticket wicket in 1963 to prevent skiers sharing lift tickets, while also not damaging ski clothing.

Ski resort
A ski resort is a resort developed for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. In Europe a ski resort is a town or village in a ski area – a mountainous area, where there are ski trails and other supporting services such as hotels, restaurants, equipment rentals, and a ski lift system. In North America it is more common for ski areas to exist well away from towns, and the term ski resort is used for a destination resort, often purpose-built and self-contained, where skiing is the main activity.

Sports therapist Lucy, from local company Massage 1936, transformed one of the chalet bedrooms into a serene treatment room, dreamy music included, and for 60 minutes I was pampered top to toe. Heaven! As well as Mr Blunt's La Vache with its fun, Swiss mountain vibe and cow-themed décor, we ate at Le Carrefour (5,741ft), which has been serving skiers since 1950. This quirky cabin-style eatery oozes traditional Swiss charm. Huge cowbells on leather straps hang along the wall and pretty heart-shaped trinkets decorate windows. The food is rather engaging, too. A must is the rump of beef, sizzling on a hot stone plate. Another sizzling encounter is the après-ski and incessant nightlife. If you want a ski-in, ski-out après experience, the W hotel's On the Piste pop-up-bar, outside the chic new hotel, is a great spot and you don't even have to remove your skis to order a drink. -

LUXURY SKI RESORT in SWITZERLAND I've jsut been swept off my feet by James Blunt. Sadly, not by the singer but by a chairlift named in his honour, 8,858ft up in the mountains above Verbier. The Swiss ski resort is one of the world's finest and a favourite with celebrities such as Blunt, who likes it here so much he's opened La Vache, a lift station turned swish panoramic restaurant, which sits atop Attelas mountain. That's where I'm heading. With more than 248 miles of pistes, from leisurely blues to exhilarating blacks, which trail down from the highest point, Mont Fort, at 10,925ft, Verbier is not for the faint-hearted. 10. Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. It may not have the world’s best snow, but it does have some serious skiing, and the mighty Dolomiti Superski pass means you can take advantage of the links into the Sella Ronda and also the lovely hidden valley at Lagazuoi – possibly Europe’s most beautiful red run.
9. Murren, Switzerland. As not only is it a beautifully tranquil traffic-free village, linked into the superb Jungfrau ski area - which includes the longest downhill run in the world, the Lauberhorn – it also sits in the shadow of arguably the most imposing mountain face anywhere in the world.
8. Whistler, Canada. Whistler is awesome, epic, brilliant and a lesson in how to create a joined-up ski resort that works for every single level of skier. Just inland from Vancouver; Whistler gets struck by Pacific storms all winter, and while the snow isn’t as dry as some of the interior British Colombian resorts, it is abundant, and as good; if not better than most of the snow we get in Europe.
7. Telluride, Colorado, USA. The San Juan Mountains of Colorado are amongst the newest on the continent and as such are like a huge set of razor sharp dragon’s teeth, which makes for some of the best skiing in USA. Telluride has mile upon mile of perfect piste and masses of superb inbound hike-to terrain, backed up by a purpose-built mountain village and the very real and very cool original cowboy village which just makes you envisage that an old school shootout is about to start at any moment.
6. St Anton, Austria. After skiing in Austria is like nothing you’ll experience anywhere else, and while bad for every major organ of your body, it is great fun, if a little painful.
5. Zermatt, Switzerland. Zermatt and Verbier, are arguably Switzerland’s top resorts, but only Zermatt and the linked Italian resort of Cervinia have the Matterhorn as an awe-inspiring backdrop. Zermatt has world-class skiing, a good snow record and all the in-resort facilities you’d ever need.
4. Alyeska, Alaska, USA. A 33-year average snowfall of over 16 meters is enough to keep the pistes in pristine condition and the off piste fresh all season. The mountain here is quite open, with multiple black diamond chutes and wide exposed faces, while most of the trees are no go areas. Intermediate and beginners are well looked after, with plenty of groomed pistes on offer.
3. Riksgransen, Sweden. Riksgransen’s pistes aren’t necessarily the longest, but they are varied and the off piste is good too, but it’s the ski touring that stands out here as being world class. It really is true wilderness and you’re likely to meet a few reindeer if you leave the resort boundaries.
2. Meribel, France. Meribel got the vote over Courchevel and Val Thorens mainly because it’s the middle valley, making it super easy to ski in any of the 3 valleys without feeling rushed. Another bonus of Meribel is the fact that it’s been developed sympathetically, with low level chalet style development rather than high-rise apartments which spoil many a French mountainside.

I was staying with a group of friends in Amadouvier, only a five-minute walk from Medran (the main lift station), and close to the apres-ski bars; it's a five-bedroom property and one of 46 sumptuous chalets that Bramble Ski manages in the resort.
A few days here and you will never want to see a painted skirting board ever again: everything from the doors and staircase to floor is gloriously rustic, stripped back to a natural wood finish.
The living room cum dining area features vintage leather sofas scattered with colourful animal print cushions, enormous lamps with handcrafted driftwood bases and an earthy coloured tapestry hanging above a stone fireplace.
My spacious bedroom has a private balcony and king-size bed perfectly plump with goosedown pillows and duvet and the bathroom, twice the size of most ensuites, boasts a gigantic bath, separate waterfall shower and indulgent Acqua di Parma toiletries.
BRAMBLE Ski's in-chalet team of staff -- concierge Archie, hosts Jack and Camden, chef Max and ski concierge Zac -- all ensured our few days in Verbier were memorable.
From organising our ski equipment, personally delivered and fitted, to preparing fantastic cuisine including hearty breakfasts, afternoon tea with freshly-baked cakes and superb five-course dinners, they made sure we were spoilt rotten. Switerland ski resort verbier He organised lunch stops on the mountain and, one afternoon after a busy day on the slopes, a massage. Sports therapist Lucy, from local company Massage 1936, transformed one of the chalet bedrooms into a serene treatment room, dreamy music included, and for 60 minutes I was pampered top to toe. Heaven!
As well as Mr Blunt's La Vache with its fun, Swiss mountain vibe and cow-themed décor, we ate at Le Carrefour (5,741ft), which has been serving skiers since 1950. This quirky cabin-style eatery oozes traditional Swiss charm.
Huge cowbells on leather straps hang along the wall and pretty heart-shaped trinkets decorate windows. The food is rather engaging, too. A must is the rump of beef, sizzling on a hot stone plate.
Another sizzling encounter is the après-ski and incessant nightlife. If you want a ski-in, ski-out après experience, the W hotel's On the Piste pop-up-bar, outside the chic new hotel, is a great spot and you don't even have to remove your skis to order a drink.

I've jsut been swept off my feet by James Blunt. Sadly, not by the singer but by a chairlift named in his honour, 8,858ft up in the mountains above Verbier.
The Swiss ski resort is one of the world's finest and a favourite with celebrities such as Blunt, who likes it here so much he's opened La Vache, a lift station turned swish panoramic restaurant, which sits atop Attelas mountain. That's where I'm heading. With more than 248 miles of pistes, from leisurely blues to exhilarating blacks, which trail down from the highest point, Mont Fort, at 10,925ft, Verbier is not for the faint-hearted.

Wearing a headlamp, he hiked, biked and skied in the mountains ... He skis ... Sometimes that means hiking to the top of a ski hill because the resorts are closed by the time he gets off work. He begins skiing before the resorts open in the winter, hiking up to the top with his “rock skis” and skiing/scraping his way to the bottom.
