Jamie Stewart

James "Jamie" Cyrus Stewart (born March 2, 1978) is the front-man of the American musical group Xiu Xiu (singer/guitarist/programmer), a former front-man of IBOPA and Ten in the Swear Jar and a current member of Former Ghosts. He was also a member of 7 Year Rabbit Cycle which has since disbanded. He is a native of Northridge, California, grew up in Los Angeles, California, and currently lives in Durham, NC.

When IBOPA broke up, he and four other members went on to form Ten in the Swear Jar, which evolved into Xiu Xiu. He is openly bisexual.^[1]

Stewart has contributed to many various one-time projects, including a voice-over for the experimental short film Hallelujah! Gorilla Revival.^[2] He also works as a producer and has produced albums for various indie bands, including The Shiny Diamonds, and railcars. Stewart has also collaborated with HORSE the Band, Shearwater, Grouper and Larsen.

Jamie Whincup (born 6 February 1983 in Melbourne, Victoria) is an Australian auto racing driver who competes in the V8 Supercar Championship Series, driving for TeamVodafone. He is a three-time V8 Supercars champion and three-time Bathurst 1000 winner.

Early career[link]

Whincup's interest in motor racing commenced at the age of 7 when his father purchased him a go-kart.^[1] From 1991 through to 1997, he won numerous Rookie and Junior titles at a state level.^[2] He was crowned KartOz Magazine's Karter of the Year and won the FMK Senior Intercontinental A Karting Series in 1998 and the Formula A Series in 1999 before progressing to Formula Ford in 2000.

In 2001 Whincup embarked on the Australian Formula Ford Championship with a team run by his father and Uncle Graeme (a former Sports Sedan star) with mechanical support from fellow V8 Supercar driver Greg Ritter, racing with the Mygale Formula Ford team.^[3] After finishing third in his debut year, he moved to Sonic Motorsport for the 2002 season and went on to win the championship convincingly, which secured him his first ever V8 Supercar drive with Garry Rogers Motorsport.^[4]

V8 Supercar[link]

After completing a full year of V8 Supercar racing with Garry Rogers Motorsport, he was replaced by the more experienced Cameron McConville and was left without a full-time drive for 2004. He was later contracted by Castrol Perkins Racing to drive in the two endurance events.

Whincup landed himself a full-time drive in 2005 with the Melbourne based Tasman Motorsport. He had many solid results throughout the season, including a fourth at the one-off Chinese round at the Shanghai International Circuit, a third at the Sandown 500 and most notably, second at the Bathurst 1000 endurance events with team-mate Jason Richards after leading late in the race.

Triple Eight Race Engineering[link]

In 2006, Whincup jumped from Holden to Ford and joined Triple Eight Race Engineering alongside Craig Lowndes. Whincup had a stellar first season, taking victory in the two biggest races of the season, the Clipsal 500 and Supercheap Auto 1000, the latter as co-driver to Craig Lowndes. After some incidents and unreliability, Whincup finished the championship in a slightly disappointing tenth position at years end.

In 2007, Whincup returned with same the team which was re-branded Team Vodafone and celebrated several victories included a second Bathurst 1000 title along-side team-mate Craig Lowndes. Whincup finished second in the driver's title by a mere two points to Garth Tander from the HSV Dealer Team.

In 2007, Whincup began a mentoring role as part of Team Vodafone's Junior Development Program, and as a co-ambassador for Formula Ford Australia alongside Will Davison. His first round win for 2007, at a water-logged Winton, was the first round win for the year by a Ford driver. He celebrated both his 50th V8 Supercar Championship start and his inaugural pole position at Triple Eight Race Engineering's test track, Queensland Raceway. Whincup moved into the championship lead after a successful defence his and Lowndes' Bathurst 1000 crown, coming just weeks after teaming with Lowndes to win the last Sandown 500.

Entering Surfers Paradise for the Indy 300 with the series lead from Garth Tander, a difficult day on Sunday with a spin in the final race saw the lead revert to Tander who won the round. Whincup then had a disappointing weekend at Desert 400 at the Bahrain International Circuit, where poor qualifying pace for Triple Eight was compounded by a run of all three races marred by minor accidents, and he took away zero points. Tander and Craig Lowndes both had fairly good weekends, putting Tander into the series lead over Lowndes heading into the Symmons Plains race in Tasmania. Tander backed up his previous two round wins in Tasmania with a dominant race 1 win on Saturday, but a slow stop in race two dropped him to tenth, before disaster in race three after touching Steven Richards, he broke his steering and was out. Whincup won both races, and headed into the Grand Finale at Phillip Island on the December 1–2 weekend with a slender seven point championship lead.

Whincup failed to keep his slender margin at Phillip Island; after Garth Tander won the first two races Whincup faced a seven point deficit. After the final race Whincup finished second, behind Todd Kelly and two places ahead of Tander but fell just two points short of the title. At the 2007 V8 Supercar Gala Awards Dinner at the completion of the 2007 season, Whincup was awarded the Barry Sheene Medal, deemed to be the "Best and Fairest" award for V8 Supercars.

Whincup won the 2008 Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, and won a further six rounds after that including the Bathurst 1000 for a third year running. He clinched his first Championship after winning the first race in the final round at Oran Park Raceway, and was awarded the Barry Sheene Medal for the second year running at the V8 Gala Awards.

In 2009, Whincup successfully defended his title in a brand new Ford FG Falcon, including wins at Adelaide, Hamilton, Tasmania, Darwin, Townsville, Oueensland, Phillip Island and Barbagallo. Despite bad luck in the endurance races and at the Gold Coast, Whincup was able to put it all together at Sydney Olympic Park And became the first back-to-back championship winner since Marcos Ambrose in 2003–2004.^[5]

In 2010, following the team's switch to Holden VE Commodores, Whincup won the first four races of the season^[6] and Hamilton but a run of bad luck at Queensland raceway and Winton saw him relinquish the championship lead for the first time in two years, and sits second in the points table, just ahead of teammate Craig Lowndes in third. He became close to becoming a 3 time champion, the next triple champion in a row after Mark Skaife from 2000–2002 and the second man to win the driver's championship in both a Ford and a Holden after Norm Beechey, but due to a multi car crash in the 25th race of the season at the Sydney Telstra 500 in wet weather his car was badly damaged and couldn't continue. In the 26th and final race of the season he was out of reach to score enough points to take back the lead from James Courtney and finished 2nd in the season.

In 2011, Whincup regained the championship from James Courtney becoming the first International V8 Supercar Champion. Whincup won races in Abu Dhabi, Adelaide, Perth, Winton, Townsville, Gold Coast, Tasmania and Sandown. The title that went down to the final race in Sydney where Whincup beat fellow team-mate Craig Lowndes by 35 points.^[7] Triple Eight Race Engineering's stellar season earned them 1st in the Teams Championship, their second Teams Championship with Holden.^[8]

Chris Atkinson (born 30 November 1979) in Bega, New South Wales, Australia) is a professional rally driver. In the WRC (World Rally Championship), he drove for the Subaru World Rally Team from 2004-2008. His best finish on an individual WRC event is second, which he achieved at the 2008 Rally México and Rally Argentina. Other podium placings include third place finishes at the 2005 Rally Japan and the 2008 Monte Carlo Rally.

Atkinson is currently driving for Team MRF, and will compete in the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship in 2012 as well as making a guest appearance in the World Rally Championship. Atkinson currently leads the 2012 Asia Pacific Rally Championship having won the openikng round.

Early career[link]

Prior to his motorsport career, Atkinson had a career as a stockbroker. He graduated at Bond University in commerce, majoring in finance and accounting in 1999 after receiving an academic scholarship for studies. Atkinson was a co-driver for his brother Ben, but after attending a rally school with his brother, the pair swapped positions, scoring a class win and third overall.^[1][2] Currently, his brother Ben Atkinson is a co-driver for Cody Crocker in APRC.

For his first full season of competition, Atkinson contested the Australian Rally Championship aboard a privately-entered Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, finishing inside the top ten in Group N and in the overall top 20 on every round he contested, as well as setting two second-fastest stage times. The Atkinsons finished ninth outright to become Privateer Champions. This performance brought Atkinson to the attention of Suzuki, who offered him the opportunity to drive one of its Super 1600 Ignis models with the Suzuki Sport team in the 2003 Asia-Pacific Rally Championship.

Atkinson rewarded the team with a class win in the opening round of the championship in Canberra. Next came a second place in New Zealand, a second in Japan and two wins in Thailand and India, culminating in Atkinson winning the Super 1600 title. He finished fifth in the overall championship, ahead of many more powerful, four-wheel-drive, turbo-charged cars.

WRC career[link]

Atkinson's first world rally was the 2004 Rally New Zealand in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI. For 2005, he was signed by Subaru World Rally Team to drive the Subaru Impreza WRC alongside 2003 world champion Petter Solberg. He finished 12th overall in the drivers' world championship with 13 points. His best results were third in Japan and fourth in Australia.

After finishing the 2006 season tenth overall in the drivers championship with 20 points and a fourth place as his best finish, Subaru told Atkinson that his job was on the line, and if he could not balance his speed with safety and achieve quality results he would be replaced by another driver.

At the start of the 2007 season Atkinson finished fourth at the 2007 Rally Monte Carlo, recording three stage wins. On the final day of the rally, Atkinson was 0.8 seconds behind fourth place man Mikko Hirvonen and had to beat him in the super special stage, a 2.4 km run through Monaco which uses part of the world famous Formula One course. Hirvonen set a time of 1:50.9 meaning that Atkinson had to at least set a time of 1:50.1 to beat him, but Atkinson did better and took the stage win with a time of 1:49.9. Hirvonen was the first person over to Atkinson to congratulate him.

At the 2007 Rally Finland, Atkinson posted the fastest time on the short opening super special stage on a horse-racing course at Killeri, to lead the rally for a short time. Atkinson finished the 2007 season seventh overall in the drivers' world championship.

At the beginning of the 2008 season, Atkinson took third place in Monte Carlo; while at the 2008 Corona Rally Mexico, Atkinson managed second, 30 seconds ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala. He finished the season fifth in the drivers' standings, and for the first time, outscored hitherto team leader Solberg.

After Subaru's season-ending announcement of its withdrawal from the WRC, Atkinson signed for the new Citroën Junior Team for the 2009 season.^[3] In his only rally for the season with the team in Ireland, he produced a strong showing to finish fifth, despite colliding with a telegraph pole during the first day, and suffering a spin on SS18.

Re-entry into WRC[link]

After signing with Monster World Rally Team in 2012, Atkinson raced along side Ken Block in Mexico.

Atkinson won a stage, SS12 - Leon Super Special but finished with a DNF due to mechanical failure.

Proton R3 Rally Team[link]

In April 2010, Chris Atkinson began a partnership with the Proton R3 Rally Team. Competing in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), Atkinson drove a Proton Satria Neo Super 2000, alongside co-driver Stephane Prevot. Also driving for the Proton R3 Rally Team was former WRC driver Alister McRae.

After making a guest appearance at the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) Monte Carlo Rally, Atkinson has dominated the 2011 APRC, winning the Malaysian Rally, Rallye de Nouvelle Caledonia and the International Rally of Whangarei. However missing round two in Queensland and the final round in Hokkaido saw him finish second to his team mate Alister McRae who competed in all rounds.

MRF Skoda Rally Team[link]

Chris Atkinson will compete in an Indian-run Skoda in the 2012 FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship. Atkinson will drive for the MRF team in a Skoda Fabia S2000, co-driven by regular wingman Stephane Prevot.

The Australian will compete in the Asia Pacific Championship in the team’s second car, with the other car to be driven by regular team driver Guarav Gill of India. The MRF team, based in Chennai, India, has signed Atkinson to drive a Skoda Fabia S2000 to rival the Malaysian Proton factory squad, for which the 32-year-old competed over the past two seasons. ^[4]

Circuit Racing[link]

At the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 2006, Chris made his circuit racing debut driving a Subaru Impreza for the Autosportif Racing UK placing second in class ^[5]. From that lead a drive in the 2007 Bathurst 12 Hour again in a Subaru Impreza where he finished first in class and second outright. In 2009 he competed in the third round of the Australian Mini Challenge co-driving with two time Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series Champion Steve Owen finishing second in the 30 minute endurance race.^[6]

Ches Smith is an American musician whose primary instruments are drums, percussion, and vibraphone. He writes and performs music in a wide variety of contexts, including solo percussion, experimental rock bands, and small and large jazz ensembles.

Smith has performed with Good For Cows, Marc Ribot, Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Xiu Xiu, Trevor Dunn's Trio-Convulsant, Carla Bozulich, Beat Circus, Sean Hayes, Ben Goldberg, 7 Year Rabbit Cycle, Ara Anderson and Fred Frith.

He has also recorded and performed a full-length album of his own solo percussion pieces entitled Congs For Brums (2006).^[1] In 2010 he released Congs for Brums 'Noise to Men'. ^[2]

Justin Pearson (born August 20, 1975) is a vocalist and bassist known for his prolific music career, playing in a number of San Diego-based noise rock, punk and grindcore bands, as well as his record label Three One G Records. Starting off in the punk outfit Struggle in 1994, ensuing projects included Swing Kids, The Locust, The Crimson Curse, Holy Molar, Head Wound City, Ground Unicorn Horn, Brain Tourniquet, All Leather, and Retox. He has collaborated with Jimmy LaValle, Gabe Serbian, Mark McCoy, Wesley Eisold, Karen O, Nick Zinner, Jordan Blilie, Cody Votolato, The Bloody Beetroots, Vegamoore and members of Bastard Noise, among others.

Pearson has been cited as an influence for his work in Swing Kids and The Locust on the genres of noise rock,^[1] powerviolence, and what has been dubbed "freak punk."^[2]

Early life[link]

Justin Pearson was born on August 20, 1975 and initially raised in Phoenix, Arizona by his parents.^[3] He was a single child^[4] and went by the nickname J.P.^[5] Pearson has stated he liked music and the aesthetics of rock music since he was little.^[3][6]

Around ten his mother's cousin let him borrow a guitar, and he eventually moved onto bass.^[3] He also began skateboarding and listening to the Thrasher skate/rock compilation tapes with bands like Septic Death, the Sex Pistols, The Misfits,^[4] and Suicidal Tendencies. He has stated he was especially drawn towards the music that touched on social politics.^[6] Pearson also got into break dancing and early rap like Run DMC and The Beastie Boys, as well as developing an interest in metal. In Phoenix he lived a couple blocks away from some of the bandmembers of Slayer.^[3]

When Pearson was twelve years old his father was murdered.^[4] Later that year in 1987, Pearson and his mother moved to San Diego, California,^[5] specifically Clairemont.^[7] His mother's new boyfriend moved with them,^[4] and Pearson has stated that the man was physically and emotionally abusive towards both of them. At his new middle school he also faced death threats and attacks from skinhead students.^[5]

Pearson continued to play guitar, taking a few lessons before teaching himself how to play the instrument with friends.^[3] At age 13 he met future collaborator Eric Allen.^[8] He met and befriended Matt Anderson of End of the Line at the age of 14.^[7]

Pearson was soon exposed to the unique San Diego hardcore punk scene^[6] and began attending all the all-ages shows he could,^[7] discovering influential local bands such as Amenity, Heroin, Forced Down, Drive Like Jehu, and Crash Worship.^[5] He also attended metal shows at house parties, eventually discovering Che Café,^[7] an all-ages venue on the campus of UC San Diego.^[6] The Che frequently hosted underground metal and punk bands. At the venue he saw shows by Blast, Chain of Strength, Carcass, Chumbawumba, Crossed Out, Inside Out, Filth, and Sleep.^[7] Pearson befriended a number of the musicians,^[5] stating "I'd go [to the Che] and talk to all the bands. They were really down-to-earth people, but they had this art that was just mind-blowing. When they played they would turn into ax murderers on instruments."^[6]

Early music career[link]

Struggle[link]

At age fifteen he founded the band Struggle with friends he had met through high school and local concerts. The different members' taste in music was diverse, but they were all fans and friends of bands like Born Against, Downcast, Unbroken, and other hardcore punk groups.^[7] The band went on its first tour that year in 1991, and Pearson has since described how he saw his bandmates as his adopted family.^[4]

At the age of 16,^[4] his home situation escalated to Pearson having to fight back against his mother's boyfriend, and he was kicked out of the house. He stayed in school and graduated, living off social security checks from his father's death. When not in school he also continued to tour with Struggle,^[5] and while touring they met bands such as Filrth and Rorschach, and Blatz.^[5] Struggle released recordings on Undertow Records, Ebullition Records, and Bloodlink Records, and disbanded in 1994.^[8]

Swing Kids[link]

After the dissolution of Struggle in 1994, Pearson co-founded the band Swing Kings, an early San Diego hardcore and noise rock group. He formed the band along with Eric Allen of Unbroken, Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf, Jose Palafox, John Brady, and Michelle Maskovich. Pearson served as vocalist and sole lyricist, and has described the themes as largely influenced by social political issues.^[8] Their music was characterized by Pearson's spoken/screamed vocals and their melodic/chaotic rhythms and song structures. The group disbanded in 1997.

Swing Kids are also credited with the unintentional creation of the fad "Spock Rock" during the mid 1990s; largely due to many of their fans emulating Pearson's fashion sense and hair style. Pearson has expressed dislike of the term.^[5]

Three One G[link]

Also in 1994^[9] Pearson founded the independent label Three One G, or 31G Records. The first album released on the new label was the 1994 single "And / Fall On Proverb" by San Diego metalcore band Unbroken. The second release was a reissue of the recent debut album from Swing Kids.^[10] He funded the label with the financial aid he was receiving from the community college he was attending,^[7] and has stated he was partly inspired to start 31G by Vinyl Communications and Gravity Records.^[5] In 1998 Allysia Edwards joined with Pearson as a partner at the label, and their annual output began to increase.^[10]

The Locust[link]

Starting in 1994, he became bassist and joint vocalist for the new band The Locust,^[11] formed with musicians such as Gabe Serbian and Joey Karam. The Locust was initially a powerviolence project whose first release was a split with genre pioneers Man Is the Bastard. Later releases incorporated synthesizers and became increasingly theatrical.^[12] The band regularly played shows in all-ages punk clubs in Los Angeles and San Diego,^[6] usually donning insect costumes.^[12]

The Locust is Pearson's best-known work, and became known for their unique mix of grindcore speed and aggression,^[13] mathcore complexity, and new wave weirdness. According to Pearson, "I just want to change the way people look at music or maybe just destroy it in general."^[12] Stylus described the band's sound as "Relentless blitzkriegs of high velocity noise, skinny tie keyboards and bloody screaming that often last less than a minute, Locust songs are tightly-wound, dynamic and bizarre expressions of frustration and hatred whose intensity and creativity are currently unparalleled in punk rock."^[13] The band has also been praised by Dave Lombardo of Slayer, who said "There's a band called The Locust, and their music hits me now like D.R.I. hit me in the early '80s".^[14]

While with The Locust the band and Pearson organized a number of "gender-baiting incidents," including Pearson and drummer Gabe Serbian staging a fake same-sex marriage while on tour in Hawaii.^[6] At one point in 2003, Scott Beiben, the owner of the record label Bloodlink, called up The Jerry Springer Show and orchestrated a hoax^[8] for Pearson to appear on the show as a "rock-star slut." Pearson wore a T-shirt for The Locust during the appearance, which culminated in a kiss with Beiben.^[6] Pearson later stated "I was beat up during a commercial break by one of the 'security guards' pretty bad for blowing snot on the carpet."^[8]

Crimson Curse[link]

Founded in 1998,^[8] The Crimson Curse was Pearson's first group to include keyboards and elements of deathrock. According to Pearson the band was an attempt to return a sense of lunacy and excitement to the hardcore punk scene, which had begun to appear dry and pedantic to Pearson. Pearson says he modeled the group on the Dead Boys.^[8] The band also included Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf and Jesse F Keeler of Death from Above 1979/ MSTRKRFT. Pearson has stated "we got all these fucked up kids together. Made some punk music. That was it. But as a band we didn't get very far." A review of the band's first demo stated "The recording was horrible, but was enough for me to realize that they sounded godlike."^[8]

Later career[link]

The Holy Molar

Pearson began to frequently collaborate with other musicians on Three One G, joining as bassist for the band Holy Molar from 2001 to 2007; in addition to Locust members Pearson, Gabe Serbian, and Bobby Bray, the group included Ron Avila (formerly of Antioch Arrow) and Mark McCoy (formerly of Charles Bronson and Das Oath).

Some Girls

Some Girls, founded in 2002, was another Three One G supergroup that played in a hybrid of mathcore, grindcore with Justin again on bass and vocals.^[15] and noise rock. They released several albums, including in 2005 the The DNA Will Have Its Say EP. Pearson played bass, and Karen O of the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs performed guest vocals on the title track. The band's breakup was announced in a Punknews article, published October 23, 2007.^[16]

Head Wound City

From 2002 to 2005 he played bass in Head Wound City. Along with Pearson, consists of Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato of The Blood Brothers, Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Gabe Serbian, of The Locust and Holy Molar.^[11]

Bastard Noise

Bastard Noise is a noise music group that Pearson was a part of in 2008. They recorded the full-length Rogue Astronaut with Bobby Bray and Justin Pearson providing vocals on "Tyranny Beyond Earth Eplilogue."

All Leather[link]

All Leather, his current band, was founded in 2008. It consists of Pearson on vocals, Nathan Joyner on guitar, Jung Sing on drums, and Eric Livingston on synthesizers.They released their debut EP Hung Like A Horse on Dim Mak Records. In August 2009 they released a remix album entitled Hung Like a Donut, also on Dim Mak. On September 12, 2010, All Leather won the San Diego Music Awards "Best Hard Rock Album" category for their album When I Grow Up, I Wanna Fuck Like a Girl.

From 2008 he also been a member of Leg Lifters, which consists of Pearson and Nathan Joyner of All Leather. Leg Lifters is considered a production team. They produce a radio show with Vestal Radio, web video episodes, and remixes.

Pearson was featured on the Vegamoore song "They Keep on Fucking" www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxm87hUsn6M, Designer Drugs song "Dead Meat." Pearson is a featured vocalist on a song, "Romborama" from The Bloody Beetroots debut LP, Romborama. He toured in Australia with The Bloody Beetroots in 2009.

By 2011 Pearson had co-founded and was touring with the band Retox,^[1] a band with Gabe Serbian of the Locust, Mike Crain from The Festival of Dead Deer, and Thor Dickey. In late 2011 Retox has toured again changing Gabe Serbian with Brian Evans as drummer giving also a show with Vegamoore in Italy featured Justin Pearson at the vocals and Brian Evans at the drums www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j8Z6x98hUA. ^[17]
