Monty Alexander (born Montgomery Bernard Alexander on 6 June 1944 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a jazz pianist, who also sings and plays the melodica. His playing has a Caribbean influence and bright swinging feeling, with a strong vocabulary of bebop and soulful blues melodies. He was influenced by Oscar Peterson, Les McCann, Ahmad Jamal, and Wynton Kelly. Alexander is known for his surprise musical twists and the ability to build dramatic suspense in his playing.
Alexander discovered the piano when he was four years old, took classical music lessons at the age of six and became interested in jazz piano at the age of 14, and began playing in clubs, and on recording sessions by Clue J & His Blues Blasters, deputising for Aubrey Adams, whom he describes as his hero, when he was unable to play. Two years later, he directed a dance orchestra (Monty and the Cyclones) and played in the local clubs. Performances at the Carib Theater in Jamaica by Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole left a strong impression on the young pianist.
Alexander (/ˈæləɡzˈændər/, /ˈæləɡzˈɑːndər/) is a common male first name, and less common surname derived from the Greek "Αλέξανδρος" (Aléxandros). The most famous is Alexander the Great, who created one of the largest empires in ancient history.
Etymologically, the name is derived from the Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros), meaning "Defender of the people" or "Defending men" and also, "Protector of men", a compound of the verb ἀλέξειν alexein, "to ward off, to avert, to defend" and the noun ἀνήρ anēr, "man" (GEN ἀνδρός andros). It is an example of the widespread motif of Greek (or Indo-European more generally) names expressing "battle-prowess", in this case the ability to withstand or push back an enemy battle line.
The earliest attested form of the name is the Mycenaean Greek feminine anthroponym 𐀀𐀩𐀏𐀭𐀅𐀨, a-re-ka-sa-da-ra (transcribed as Alexandra), written in the Linear B syllabic script.
The name was one of the titles ("epithets") given to the Greek goddess Hera and as such is usually taken to mean "one who comes to save warriors". In the Iliad, the character Paris is known also as Alexander. The name's popularity was spread throughout the Greek world by the military conquests of King Alexander III, commonly known as "Alexander the Great". Most later Alexanders in various countries were directly or indirectly named for him.
Monty is often a short form of Montgomery (name), Montague (given name) and other similar names.

Pianist Monty Alexander did some of his finest recordings for the German MPS label with this one maybe being his best. This live trio set recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in June 1976 with bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton, features Alexander playing his usual repertoire of the period with blues, standards ( "Satin Doll," "Work Song" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" ) and even a version of schmaltzy "Feelings", so in vogue at the time, that uplifts the song quite a bit. I woke up early to fly Little Miss Sunshine 100 miles west to Urbana, Ohio in rainy weather to hook up with 4 other piper cubs to make the trip to Hartford and Oshkosh more comfortable. Having other pilots to "hold your hands" in case something goes wrong is always a good idea. So after our first fuel stop, one of my wheels broke off on take-off roll, and I end up sitting in a cloud of dust on a hay field in Indiana. Of course all of the other four planes took off, leaving me for buzzard bait. That was when the Ohio Bush Planes rescue squad kicked into action. Bill and Yvette Tracy changed course and headed my way with tools. Mean while back in eastern Ohio, Don Emsile stopped what he was doing and took wheels and tires off his cub. He flew them to me in his Scout (200 miles each way)....

In this interview from The Jazz Cruise 2015, pianist Monty Alexander talks about his relationship with bassist Ray Brown, who eventually connected him to bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Clayton and Hamilton became one of Alexander's great rhythm sections as well as longtime friends and associates.
For two weeks in late winter of this year at the Blue Note Jazz Club, pianist and bandleader Monty Alexander celebrated 50 years as an entertainer. He invited dear friends from his native Jamaica to the jazz world to help bring in this monumental occasion. Monty isn't just a well accomplished jazz pianist but he's also one of the most respected and well sought reggae musicians in his native Jamaica. Recording and performing with many reggae artists like Ernest Ranglin, Sly and Robbie, and Beres Hammond. He's just come off his first Grammy-nominated Motema Records release "Harlem-Kingston Express Live!" for best Reggae Album. The Harlem-Kingston Express is the pianist's foray into his musical youth while growing up in Kingston, Jamaica. While in Kingston, he witnessed and experienced th...
an original composition, released on the 1978 album (Pablo) of the same name; this was recorded in a Connecticut state park in the fall of 1984 and broadcast in 1985 by Bravo on the program 'Jazz Counterpoint w/Billy Taylor' (posted with the artist's permission)
Pianist Monty Alexander speaks on the origins of Ska and the inspiration of a truly Jamaican music - SKA. Great pianist - Monty was signed to the Telarc record label out of Cleveland, Ohio for years. He would stop by at small clubs and do long shows - two per night. Each show was completely different - no duplication.
