Brian Vander Ark is an American singer-songwriter best known as lead singer for the band The Verve Pipe.
Born in Holland, Michigan, Vander Ark began playing guitar at age 8. After high School, Brian married his first wife, Michelle Marthens and joined the U.S. Army. Shortly after they had a son. They were then stationed in Germany.
After release from the army, he joined the band His Boy Elroy as a guitarist. He eventually quit and started the band Johnny with an Eye. In 1992, he disbanded Johnny with an Eye to form The Verve Pipe with drummer Donny Brown and his brother, bassist Brad Vander Ark, and guitarist Brian Stout. The band recorded two independent albums I've Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear.
The Verve Pipe's major label debut, Villains, featured the Vander Ark-penned single "The Freshmen", one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997. "Never Let You Down," the lead single from the band's 2001 album, Underneath, was one of the Top 50 Most Played songs for Adult Top 40 and Modern A/C radio in 2001.
Vander Ark is a surname. Notable people with the surname include:
Brian (sometimes spelled Bryan) is a male given name of Irish and Breton origin, as well as a surname of Occitan origin. It is common in the English-speaking world. It is possible that the name is derived from an Old Celtic word meaning "high" or "noble". For example, the element bre means "hill"; which could be transferred to mean "eminence" or "exalted one". The name is quite popular in Ireland, on account of Brian Boru, a 10th-century king of Ireland. The name was also quite popular in East Anglia during the Middle Ages. This is because the name was introduced to England by Bretons following the Norman Conquest. Bretons also settled in Ireland along with the Normans in the 12th century, and 'their' name was mingled with the 'Irish' version. Also, in the north-west of England, the 'Irish' name was introduced by Scandinavian settlers from Ireland. Within the Gaelic speaking areas of Scotland, the name was at first only used by professional families of Irish origin. It was the fourth most popular male name in England and Wales in 1934, but a sharp decline followed over the remainder of the 20th century and by 1994 it had fallen out of the top 100. It retained its popularity in the United States for longer; its most popular period there was from 1968–1979 when it consistently ranked between eighth and tenth.
The Verve Pipe is an American rock band from West Michigan. It was formed in 1992 by Brian Vander Ark, Brian Stout and Donny Brown.
In November 1992, working with producer/engineer Jonathan Frazer, they released their first album, I've Suffered a Head Injury. The original 10-song version of the CD is no longer available. A seven-song version, without the original recording of "The Freshmen", was later released as an EP. The band, known for its energetic live performances, built strong followings during its early years, especially in the college towns of Kalamazoo and East Lansing.
In the fall of 1993, the band released a second album, Pop Smear, again working with Frazer, which helped them gain a devoted following in their native state of Michigan and their eventual signing with RCA Records in 1995. A.J. Dunning replaced Stout on guitar for the recording of Pop Smear and remained in the band for their three RCA records. This album featured the popular tracks "Spoonful of Sugar" and "Victoria".
The Verve were an English rock band formed in Wigan in 1990 by lead vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bass guitarist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. The guitarist and keyboard player Simon Tong became a member at a later date.
Beginning with a psychedelic sound, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and three albums. It also endured name and line-up changes, break-ups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was the 1997 album Urban Hymns, one of the best-selling albums in UK Chart history. The album features the hit singles "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "The Drugs Don't Work" and "Lucky Man". In 1998, the band won two Brit Awards—winning Best British Group, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in March, and in February 1999, "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
Soon after their commercial peak, The Verve broke up in April 1999, citing internal conflicts. According to Billboard magazine, "the group's rise was the culmination of a long, arduous journey that began at the dawn of the decade and went on to encompass a major breakup, multiple lawsuits, and an extensive diet of narcotics". During an eight-year split, Ashcroft dismissed talk of a reunion, saying: "You're more likely to get all four Beatles on stage." The band's original line-up reunited in June 2007, embarking on a tour later that year and releasing the album Forth in August 2008, which spawned the hit single "Love Is Noise". Amid revived tensions, the band broke up for the second time in 2009.

This music video is a combination of footage Brian shot in New York and footage I shot that was originally intended for a short film. He liked the clips and sent me the long steadie-cam shot to be appropriated into a video. The plan is to use the same footage projected behind him at his upcoming concerts. Hope you enjoy! www.jakevanderark.com

I used to be a big star, depending on who you ask
Made a million friends in minutes, but the minutes didn't last
The melody escapes me, your brightness all around
You're the reason that the light is faster than the speed of sound
With everything we have in mind for you
It's most important that you find
That 'use to be's' mean nothing and 'gonna be's' are fine
Bt you always were and always will be our Evangeline
Now, go on be a big star, hit 'em hard and fast
Just make sure the answers don't depend on who you ask
'Cause they might tell you some things, they might leave you alone
Just don't listen if they tell you 'You can never go back home'
When everything is said and done, the beauty is the best is yet to come
And 'use to be's' mean nothing and 'gonna be's' are fine
But you always were and always will be our Evangeline
Slips and falls and fingers burned
Treat them all as lessons learned
Relationships might end in flames
But the chance to love is worth the pain
And 'use to be's' mean nothing and 'gonna be's' are fine
But you always were and always will be our Evangeline
'Cause 'use to be's' mean nothing and 'gonna be's' are fine
But you always were and always will be our Evangeline
Slips and falls and fingers burned
Treat them all as lessons learned
Relationships might end in flames
But the chance to love is worth the pain
And whether weak or being tough
Being good is good enough
'Cause being good is all you can do
