Harbhajan Mann

Harbhajan Mann is a noted Punjabi singer, actor and film producer. His movies include Jee Aayan Nu, Asa Nu Mann Watnan Da, Heer Ranjha and Jag Jeondeyan De Mele.He was born on 30 December 1965 in village- ‘Khemuana’, (Bathinda).

Career

Mann began singing as an amateur in 1980 and performed in local shows for the South Asian community while attending high school in Canada. His beginnings as a professional artist can be traced to 1992, he was in Punjab. It was then that his recording of Chithiye Nee Chithiye was released and this track became a regional success. Maan realized that the market for Punjabi music in Canada was small and he returned to Punjab to record his albums. He had a breakthrough in 1999 when exposure provided by India MTV and T-Series assisted his Oye Hoye album to become a success. His Punjabi-pop style soon attracted audiences from all over India and he also undertook playback singing roles where his voice was dubbed on to those of movie actors.

The playback work led to acting roles and Maan has become a prominent figure in the revitalisation of Punjabi cinema. He has starred and produced in seven movies - Ji Aayan Nu, Asa Nu Mann Watna Da, Dil Apna Punjabi, Mitti Wajaan Mardi, Mera Pind, My home, Jag Jeondiyan De Mele and his most recent movie, Heer Ranjha.

Song

A song is a single (and often standalone) work of music intended to be sung by the human voice with distinct and fixed pitches and patterns using sound and silence and a variety of forms that often include the repetition of sections. Written words created specifically for music or for which music is specifically created, are called lyrics. If a pre-existing poem is set to composed music in classical music it is an art song. Songs that are sung on repeated pitches without distinct contours and patterns that rise and fall are called chants. Songs in a simple style that are learned informally are often referred to as folk songs. Songs that are composed for professional singers are called popular songs. These songs, which have broad appeal, are often composed by professional songwriters, composers and lyricists. Art songs are composed by trained classical composers for concert performances. Songs are performed live and recorded. Songs may also appear in plays, musical theatre, stage shows of any form, and within operas.

Baiju Bawra

Baijnath Mishra, better known as Baiju Bawra ("Baiju the Crazy"), was a dhrupad musician from medieval India. Nearly all the information on Baiju Bawra comes from legends, and lacks historical authenticity. According to the most popular legends, he lived in the Mughal period during the 15th and 16th centuries. He was one of the court musicians of Raja Mansingh Tomar of Gwalher (now Gwalior).

Legend of Bacchu

Some medieval narratives, mentioned in works such as Mirat-i-Sikandari (17th century), describe an incident about a Gujarati singer called Bacchu (also known as Bakshu or Manjhu). According to the narrative, Bacchu was a musician in the court of Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. When the Mughal emperor Humayun attacked Bahadur Shah's contingent in Mandu, Bacchu fell in the hands of a Mughal soldier. He was about to be killed, when he was recognized by a Raja allied with the Mughals. The Raja introduced him to emperor Humayun, who was pleased with his singing and granted his wish to release the Gujarati prisoners. Bacchu remained in service of the emperor for some days, but then ran away to Sultan Bahadur Shah, who had escaped from Mandu to Champaner.

Harbans Singh

Harbans Singh (March 6, 1921 – May 30, 1998) was an educationist, administrator, scholar, the editor of the Encyclopedia of Sikhism. He was respected for his contributions to Sikh scholarship and Punjabi literary studies ; he had a vital and pervasive influence in the field of religious studies, with special reference to Sikhism.

Biography

Singh was born on 6 March 1921 in the village of Kotha Guru in the Bathinda district of the Punjab. His mother, Roop Kaur, belonging to the Sodhi family traced her ancestry to the Hari Singh Nalwa clan. Nikky guninder kaur singh is his daughter who is professor at colby college in maine, USA. She deeply influenced his religious sensibilities. He received his schooling at Khalsa Secondary School at Muktsar. Thereafter, much to the disappointment of his parents, he refused to attend Medical School, and joined the Khalsa College in Amritsar, where he became President of the Khalsa College Students Association, Editor of the Darbar, and President of the Khalsa College Hockey Club. He received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from this premier Sikh institute. The College authorities were so familiar with his academic potential that they offered him his first academic position even before his exam results were out. Harbans Singh started his career as a lecturer of English at the Khalsa College in Amritsar in 1943.
