Pamban Island
Pamban Island (Tamil: பாம்பன் தீவு), also known as Rameswaram Island, is an island located between peninsular India and Sri Lanka. The island is a part of India and forms the Rameswaram taluk of the Ramanathapuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu. The principal town in the island is the pilgrimage centre of Rameswaram.
Location and size
Pamban Island is situated between 9°11' N and 9°19' N latitude and 79°12' E to 79°23' E longitudes. The chain formed by Pamban Island, the shoals of Adam's Bridge, and Mannar Island of Sri Lanka separate Palk Bay and the Palk Strait in the northeast from the Gulf of Mannar in the southwest. Pamban Island extends for around 30 kilometres in width from the township of Pamban in the west to the remains of Dhanushkodi towards the south-east. The length of the island varies from 2 kilometres at the Dhanushkodi promontory to 7 kilometres near Rameswaram. The area of the island is around 67 square km.
Demographics
Pamban Island constitutes a separate taluk of Ramanathapuram district with four administrative divisions: Okarisalkulam, Mahindi, Pamban and Rameswaram. There are two administrative villages:Pamban and Rameswaram. The two main towns on Pamban Island are Pamban and Rameswaram. There are also smaller settlements upon the island like Thangachimadam. The taluk headquarters is at Rameswaram. There are railway stations at Pamban and Rameswaram.

Rameswaram
Rameswaram, (also spelt as Ramesvaram, Rameshwaram or Ramisseram) is a town and a second grade municipality in the Ramanathapuram district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar, at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is the terminus of the railway line from Chennai and Madurai. Together with Varanasi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
According to Hindu mythology, this is the place from where the Hindu god Rama built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from her abductor Ravana. The Ramanathaswamy Temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva is located at the centre of the town and is closely associated with Rama. The temple along with the town is considered a holy pilgrimage site for both shaivas and vaishnavas.

It is located on an island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is less than 40 kilometers from the Jaffna Peninsula, Sri Lanka. Together with Kashi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus. Hence, it is a bustling pilgrim centre.
It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. According to legends, this is the place from where Lord Rama, built a bridge Ram Setu(also known as Adam's Bridge) across the sea to Lanka to rescue his consort Sita, from her abductor, Ravana. The name Rama's Bridge or Rama Setu (Sanskrit; setu: bridge) refers to the bridge built by the Vanara (ape men) army of Rama in Hindu mythology, which he used to reach Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana.
Rameswaram has an average elevation of 10 metres (32 feet). The island is spread across an area of 61.8 square kilometres and is in the shape of a conch. Rameswaram is significant for many Hindus as a pilgrimage to Varanasi is considered to be incomplete without a pilgrimage to Rameswaram.

There are sixty-four Tīrthas or Theerthams (holy water bodies) in and around Rameswaram. According to the Skanda Purana, twenty-four of them are important. Of the 24, 14 are in the form of tanks and wells within the precincts of the temple.
Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on the Palk Strait that connects Rameswaram to mainland India.

Air: The nearest airport is at Madurai, at a distance of 154-km.
Rail: Rameshwaram is well connected by trains from all the major cities of India.
Road: State transport has a regular bus service available from the railway station to the various places in and around Rameshwaram. For local transportation taxis, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and Tongas are available. City bus service is also available in the island.

Connecting the Gulf of Burnёf with the island of Noirmoutier, Passage du Gois is a road that is not only unique but extremely dangerous. Twice, every day, when the high tide rises, the 2.58-mile long passage disappears 13 ft under water.

These two islands are located in the southwest of South Korea. Two times a year a natural causeway opens due to extremely low tides, connecting the islands for a period of one hour. The causeway is almost 3 kilometers long, and over 40 meters wide.
6. Barra Airport
Barra is a 23-square mile island off the western coast of Scotland. It has an airport with three marked runways and conducts regularly scheduled flights. What makes those flights unique is that the schedule takes the tide into account — during high tide, the sea submerges the runways.
5. St. Michael's Mount
St Michael’s Mount is a tidal island located 366 meters off the Mount’s Bay coast of Cornwall, in south-western England. It is united with the mainland by a man-made causeway, passable only at mid to low tide, made of granite setts.
4. Rising Tide Horses
Four horses are standing by the Thames, but you'll only see them at low tide. They are located by the Vauxhall Bridge, not far from the Houses of Parliament, and are visible in different degrees as the water level changes. Created by eco-sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor to encourage people to reflect on our dependence on fossil fuels, the horses' heads are oil well pumps – also known as horsehead pumps.

Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram, TamilNadu, India: Road trip of 8kms towards the tip of India in the Gulf of Mannar, Dhanushkodi. This place has confluence of two seas- Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. A full fledged town was destroyed in 1964 cyclone, since then its been declared as Ghost Town. A very serene, mystic, religious, pristine and beautiful place. A must visit.
1964 Cyclone: On that night (December 22) at 23.55 hours while entering Dhanushkodi railway station, the train No.653, Pamban-Dhanushkodi Passenger, a daily regular service which left Pamban with 110 passengers and 5 railway staff, was only few hundred yards before Dhanushkodi Railway station when it was hit by a massive tidal wave. The whole train was washed away killing all 115 on board.All together over 1800 people died in the cyclonic storm. All dwelling houses and other structures in Dhanushkodi were marooned in the storm . The high tidal waves moved deep onto this island and ruined the entire town. In terms of wind velocity which touched 150 knots (277km per hour) at Vavunia in Northern Sri Lanka on the evening of 22 Dec 1964[5] , the Rameshwaram cyclone is regarded as one of Asia's fiercest cyclone of 20th century.
Dhanushkodi or Danushkodi (Tamil: தனுஷ்கோடி) is a town/village at the southern tip of the Rameswaram island, at the eastern coast of the Tamil Nadu state of India.
Dhanushkodi is situated in the South-East of Pamban. Danushkodi is about 18 miles (29 km) West of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The Dhanushkodi railway line running from Pamban Station was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone and a passenger train with over 100 passengers drowned in the sea.
Hindu scriptures says that at the request of Vibeeshana, brother of Ravan and ally of Ram, Rama broke the Sethu with one end of his bow and hence the name Dhanushkodi, Dhanush meaning Bow and Kodi meaning end. It is also said that Rama marked this spot for Setu with one end of his famous bow. Bath in holy Sethu at the junction of the two seas normally precedes the pilgrimage to Rameswaram. A series of rocks and islets found in a line are shown as remnants of the ancient Setu also called as Rama's Bridge.
It is said that Pilgrimage to Kashi will be completed only after the worship at Rameswaram besides a holy bath in Dhanushkodi at the Confluence of Mahodadhi (Bay of Bengal) and Ratnakara (Indian Ocean).

According to legend, this is the place from where Rama, the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his consort Sita from her abductor Ravana. Lord Rama along with Maa Sita and his brother Lakshmana, installed and worshiped the lingam (an iconic symbol of Shiva) here to expiate the sin of Brahmahatya incurred while killing of the Brahmin Ravana. According to another version, as quoted in Adhyarma Ramayana, Rama installed the lingam before the construction of the bridge to Lanka.

Rameswaram is a town and a third grade municipality in the Ramanathapuram district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar, at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is the terminus of the railway line from Chennai and Madurai.
The Ramanathaswamy Temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva is located at the centre of the town and is closely associated with Rama.The temple along with the town is considered a holy pilgrimage site for both Shaivites and Vaishnavites.
