Oregon (i/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/ AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, and the Snake River delineates much of the eastern boundary. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. It is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean, and the proximity to the ocean heavily influences the state's mild winter climate, despite the latitude.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843, the Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles, Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 26th most populous U.S. state. The capital of Oregon is Salem, the second most populous of its cities, with 160,614 residents (2013 estimate). With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.
Vasant Rai (1942–1985) was one of world's most acclaimed performers of Indian music and virtuoso of the Indian-Persian-Afghan instrument Sarod.
Rai was born in Unjha, a small town in Gujarat state in India. He studies music in India. Rai was the last student of Allauddin Khan, who is best known as the teacher of Ravi Shankar.
He died in his New York apartment shortly after a Carnegie Hall performance.
Rai had been coming to the United States since his teen years but finally settled in New York City in 1969 and lived mainly in the Greenwich Village area and also for a short time at the Chelsea Hotel when he was not touring. From 1969 to 1985 he conducted the Alam School of Music in Greenwich Village. Alla Rakha, Mahapurush Misra, Shamta Prasad, and Zakir Hussain usually accompanied him on the tabla.
Rai had been signed exclusively by Vanguard Records from 1975 to 1982. Vasant's first commercial recording was by EMI and on the tabla was the late Alla Rakha.
Oregon is a jazz and world music group, with core members Ralph Towner (guitar, piano, synthesizer, trumpet), Paul McCandless (woodwind instruments), Glen Moore (double bass, violin, piano), and Collin Walcott (percussion, sitar, tabla) Towner, McCandless, Moore, and Walcott met as members of world music pioneer Paul Winter's "Consort" ensemble in the late 1960s. Their contributions were seminal in establishing the Winter Consort "sound" in compositions like Towner's "Icarus." The four musicians broke away from Winter in 1970 to form their own group, Oregon (Towner and Moore met while students at the University of Oregon). They recorded their first record in 1970, but the label, Increase Records, went out of business before it could be released. (It was released by Vanguard in 1980 as Ou...

Until his death at the young age of 43 in 1985, Vasant Rai was one of the world’s most acclaimed masters of Indian music. Born in Unjha, in the province of North Gujarat, India, in 1942, he began musical education at age seven. He studied vocal music with his father, Govindji Brahmbhatt, and instrumental music with his elder brother, Kantilal. Vasant became proficient on sitar, violin, and flute, and appeared in his first concert at age 11. In 1958, after 13 years of musical experience, Vasant became the disciple of the incomparable guru Ustad Allauddin Khan, and was the last student to receive the Indian maestro’s complete musical training. He emerged a virtuoso on the sarod. The sarod is a 25-string fretless lute. Developed during the Mughal period of India’s history, the modern sarod ha...
Brendan grew up with a fiddle in his hands. at the tender age of three, Brendan picked up the violin, and has since never put it down. After learning a tune and a scale, and basic form from Mom (Dolores), Brendan with his family (who are all musical too), began playing with the local Oldtime Fiddlers group. It was with the Fiddlers on stage at their numerous jam sessions that Brendan gained his first large repertoire of tunes, from waltzes to hoedowns and most everything in between. Brendan's six older siblings had already become quite proficient on their various instruments of choice (piano, guitar, mandolin, bass and fiddle) and along with Brendan, younger brother Gabe, and parents Mike and Dolores, they began entertaining the public at local events. They were often joined by musical gra...
Meet hardworking Gypsy Jazz West, a band of four accomplished musicians playing in Portland, Oregon. Greg on guitar and vocals, Phil on guitar, Nathan on violin, and Cliff on brass (trumpet, French horn, and valve trombone). Playing in the style of Django Reinhardt, the amped acoustic group evokes a bright guitar-centric sound many call swing. Each one of these seasoned musicians can hold their own with an amalgam of American jazz and gypsy-folk techniques. But the secret sauce is the Django picking. If you are a guitarist you will not be able to walk away from this demonstration of all-over-the-neck virtuosity. The performance I recorded was one of many that play in the "park blocks" during the Farmers Market, which occurs each weekend in the heart of the city. Portland has a sister ev...

http://www.expedia.com/Portland.d178299.Destination-Travel-Guides Welcome to Portland, Oregon, where you can experience the laid-back atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest amid beautiful natural surroundings. A Portland tour is easily accomplished on foot; this city was designed for pedestrians, so you’ll be able to get around quickly. As you stroll along, you’ll find plenty of parks, fountains, and buildings old and new to explore. Be warned, this city is known for its sudden showers, so make sure you bring an umbrella to shield yourself until the sun makes a triumphant return. If you like a good brew, you’re going to love Portland’s alter-ego, Beervana – so named thanks to all the breweries located here. Wine snobs, don’t despair; you’ll find plenty to drink (responsibly) in the Willame...

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States. I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti. While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next po...

Formed around Claes Ericsson, who would later perform in the 70's band LOTUS, Taste of Blues challenges their listeners with a saucy concoction of the late 60s psych sound as well as something entirely original and free. It might just be a stretch to call this one Krautrock, but when one jumps in at the deep end here, the overt improvisations beyond the relative blues banner up front, is downright uncanny. Loads of CAN reminding moments, and this is well before CAN even developed their legendary monotonous rhythm based structure. Schizophrenia opens with the title track, which is a feast of krautocking hypnotising rhythms and then flips over to a more bluesy style on the 2nd side whilst still retaining a sonic playfulness. Maybe this band is obscure beyond recognition, but it (two of the m...
