Dianthus barbatus (Sweet William) is a species of Dianthus native to southern Europe and parts of Asia which has become a popular ornamental garden plant. It is a herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant growing to 30–75 cm tall, with flowers in a dense cluster of up to 30 at the top of the stems. Each flower is 2–3 cm diameter with five petals displaying serrated edges. Wild plants produce red flowers with a white base, but colours in cultivars range from white, pink, red, and purple to variegated patterns. The exact origin of its English common name is unknown but first appears in 1596 in botanist John Gerard's garden catalogue. The flowers are edible and may have medicinal properties. Sweet William attracts bees, birds, and butterflies.
Sweet William is a herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant native to the mountains of southern Europe from the Pyrenees east to the Carpathians and the Balkans, with a variety disjunct in northeastern China, Korea, and southeasternmost Russia. It grows to 30–75 cm tall, with green to glaucous blue-green tapered leaves 4–10 cm long and 1–2 cm broad. The flowers are produced in a dense cluster of up to 30 at the top of the stems and have a spicy, clove-like scent; each flower is 2–3 cm diameter with five petals with serrated edges; in wild plants the petals are red with a white base.

Sweetness is one of the five basic tastes and is universally regarded as a pleasurable experience, except perhaps in excess. Foods rich in simple carbohydrates such as sugar are those most commonly associated with sweetness, although there are other natural and artificial compounds that are sweet at much lower concentrations, allowing their use as non-caloric sugar substitutes. Examples of foods that may be used as non-sugar sweet substitutes include saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, xylitol, erythritol, and stevia. Other compounds, such as miraculin, may alter perception of sweetness itself.
The chemosensory basis for detecting sweetness, which varies between both individuals and species, has only begun to be understood since the late 20th century. One theoretical model of sweetness is the multipoint attachment theory, which involves multiple binding sites between a sweetness receptor and a sweet substance.

He earned worldwide fame for his discovery of Pithecanthropus erectus (later redesignated Homo erectus), or "Java Man", at that moment in time a missing link between humans and apes. Although hominid fossils had been found and studied before, Dubois was the first anthropologist to embark upon a purposeful search for them.

I've always had trouble growing Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) from seed. It's a biennial flower, and in the past, it has been so difficult to keep the weeds out of the garden. In frustration, I let the plants from two years ago go to seed and I gave up. This year, I have absolutely gorgeous sweet william flowers blooming in a weedy patch of the yard! :) Hope you enjoy! :)

Here Jeff Turner shows us how to plant Sweet William maxi plugs in a large pot with Hyacinths. These spectacular plants provide plenty of colourful flowers, perfect as an addition to the border, and excellent as cut flowers for an indoor vase display. They are highly fragrant and produce dense clusters of a wide range of flower colours from late February all the way through to summer. They are great for attracting birds, bees and butterfly’s as the bright mass of this plant’s flowers is very eye catching. In our autumn catalogue, we provide plugs at a size that can be planted straight into containers in the garden as demonstrated by Jeff here or potted on for a short period before transplanting.

According to my research sweet william is a favourite name for lovelorn young men in English folkloric ballads. In the Victorian flower language, sweet William symbolizes gallantry. In Scotland the flower is known as stinking Willie or sour Billy, which somehow makes one wonder why it has recently been considered a popular edible flower and is said to have a sweet scent. Anyway, most gardeners plant this ornamental plant for the sake of its colourful fringed petals and in the hope that it might draw bees, butterflies and birds. I hope you´ll enjoy the variety that my neighbour´s fantastic garden sports.

http://www.ibiology.org/ibioseminars/richard-amasino-part-2.html Talk Overview: Plants flower in response to changes in environmental cues such as day length (photoperiodism) and temperature. Amasino explains that Arabidopsis thaliana, a common model plant, typically flowers in response to long days. There are, however, a number of mutants that either flower when days are short or don’t flower when days are long. These mutants have allowed scientists to identify a key regulator of flowering called CONSTANS. When CONSTANS is expressed in the presence of light, it triggers a cascade of protein expression and migration that ultimately results in flower formation. In his second talk, Amasino explains that some plants germinate and begin growing in the fall but do not flower and produce se...

Ever felt frustrated having worked so hard on a painting -- only to find it still looks 'flat'? http://willkempartschool.com/how-to-acrylic-paint-light-and-shade-part-3/ Is it the proportions? The perspective? Perhaps the composition? Whilst these all play an integral part, the most effective method of making your drawings appear three dimensional, is understanding how light logic works. If line drawing creates the proportions, handling of tone creates the form. The theory seems simple and the changes in technique small, but applying the principles of how tone, light and shade work, will improve the illusion of form in every drawing you do -- regardless of the subject. And the exciting part about it is, once you 'get' lighting, the principles never change. In Part 1 of this 2 Part p...

Impacts of the English in the New World ( Pilgrims ) Some 100 people, many of them seeking religious freedom in the New World, set sail from England on the Mayflower in September 1620. That November, the ship landed on the shores of Cape Cod, in present-day Massachusetts. A scouting party was sent out, and in late December the group landed at Plymouth Harbor, where they would form the first permanent settlement of Europeans in New England. These original settlers of Plymouth Colony are known as the Pilgrim Fathers, or simply as the Pilgrims.
What makes a successful CEO? Most people call to mind a familiar definition: “a seasoned manager with deep industry expertise.” Others might point to the qualities of today’s so-called celebrity CEOs—charisma, virtuoso communication skills, and a confident management style. But what really matters when you run an organization? What is the hallmark of exceptional CEO performance? Quite simply, it is the returns for the shareholders of that company over the long term. In this refreshing, counterintuitive book, author Will Thorndike brings to bear the analytical wisdom of a successful career in investing, closely evaluating the performance of companies and their leaders. You will meet eight individualistic CEOs whose firms’ average returns outperformed the S&P; 500 by a factor of twenty—in ot...
