The solar and lunar calendars each have their strengths. This segment from Dr. David Neiman's series, "Cradles of Civilization" discusses the method of reconciliation between these two systems and the adjustments made to the lunar system in the Jewish calendar.
Dr. David Neiman (1921-2004) was an internationally renowned scholar, speaker, and writer who inspired many people. His life's work concerned the intricate relations between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism throughout history and in modern times. Dr. Neiman made history come alive through his dramatic presentations and unique interpretations. In light of our current world situation, Dr. Neiman's work is not only extremely relevant but also remarkably prescient. More than anything, Dr. Neiman was a keen observer of the human condition. His words convey our shared history with clarity, humor, and humanity.
Dr. Neiman was the first Jewish scholar appointed to teach Religion at Boston College, one of America's leading Catholic Universities. He served as Professor in the Department of Theology for a quarter of a century. While there he was also invited to teach at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After retiring from Boston College, Dr.Neiman moved to Los Angeles, where he taught at Loyola Marymount University, St. John' s Seminary in Camarillo and the University of Judaism in Bel Air.

Of course you find the 'equinox' in Scripture! But in a very surprising way. Why do you think the Temple faced East? Only one reason for that: it was a TIME-PIECE for the set-apart days! You see the chadash or renewing of the months happens 4 times in any given year and they are considered as Yearly Sabbaths. At the 2 equinoctial days the 'sun' shine directly into the Temple, on the 2 solistial days are identified by the casting of a shadow, caused by Boaz and Jachin the PILLARS that were placed there by Solomon. This is a PERFECT time-piece for you and I to use, eventually the whole world to reckon the set-apart days. It was set in motion at creation. From this you can calculate all of the pilgrimage feast days: to the second! and guess what? There will always be ripe barley. No need to look-out for an unreliable, reflected light crescent moon.

Solar calendar
A solar calendar is a calendar whose dates indicate the position of Earth on its revolution around the Sun or, equivalently, the apparent position of the sun moving on the celestial sphere. The other commonly used system is a lunar calendar which dates the months based on cycles of the lunar phases. Astronomy
The natural science of astronomy is the study of celestial objects, observations and phenomena in the night sky. The ancient discipline of astronomy is the key method of calculating a date and time. A star in a solar system is the source of light which creates the stellar day, the rotation period of orbiting planets regulates the seasons on a planet surface, this combination is monitored and recorded by a calendar.
Tropical solar calendars
If the position of the earth in its orbit around the sun is reckoned with respect to the equinox, the point at which the orbit crosses the celestial equator, then its dates accurately indicate the seasons, that is, they are synchronized with the declination of the sun. Such a calendar is called a tropical solar calendar.

The solar and lunar calendars each have their strengths. This segment from Dr. David Neiman's series, "Cradles of Civilization" discusses the method of reconciliation between these two systems and the adjustments made to the lunar system in the Jewish calendar.
Dr. David Neiman (1921-2004) was an internationally renowned scholar, speaker, and writer who inspired many people. His life's work concerned the intricate relations between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism throughout history and in modern times. Dr. Neiman made history come alive through his dramatic presentations and unique interpretations. In light of our current world situation, Dr. Neiman's work is not only extremely relevant but also remarkably prescient. More than anything, Dr. Neiman was a keen observer of the human condition. His words convey our shared history with clarity, humor, and humanity.
Dr. Neiman was the first Jewish scholar appointed to teach Religion at Boston College, one of America's leading Catholic Universities. At the 2 equinoctial days the 'sun' shine directly into the Temple, on the 2 solistial days are identified by the casting of a shadow, caused by Boaz and Jachin the PILLARS that were placed there by Solomon. This is a PERFECT time-piece for you and I to use, eventually the whole world to reckon the set-apart days. It was set in motion at creation. From this you can calculate all of the pilgrimage feast days: to the second! and guess what? There will always be ripe barley. No need to look-out for an unreliable, reflected light crescent moon.

彝曆是彝族的曆法。目前已知有十月太陽曆、十二月陰陽曆、18月太陽曆數種。彝族自古採十月太陽曆。十月太陽曆與《夏小正》同出一源，直到明清改土歸流以後，才有些人改用十二月陰陽曆。又因生活區分散，眾族人過年沒有固定日期，常以村落為單位，擇日舉行。當前復原彝曆之行動多以十月太陽曆為主。現行彝曆多指十月太陽曆，一年以五行木火土銅水分成五季（春、夏、長夏、秋、冬）；每季72日分雌雄兩個月，一年10個月（360天）；如一月為「木公月」。另有以10種動物紀月者。剩餘彝曆年節5天（閏年6天）稱為過年日，過彝族年。十月太陽曆以十二屬相紀日，每個月三輪生肖計36日。首年（東方之年）以虎為首，依序紀日不間斷，因此其他年可能出現年內每個月以兔為首的情況。彝曆紀年採用東、東南、南、西南、西、西北、北、東北八方紀年。依傳統，據至點來確定冬夏，北斗星的鬥柄指向定寒暑。歲末過年日多在冬至，即冬至日開始過彝曆年。過年日於曆演算法中，古稱「歲餘日」；依序音譯彝語為玖龍知、秙詩、詩居、詩末、阿普祭。夏至日過火把節。停用太陽曆的彝族，將新年和火把節訂於農曆十二月十六和六月廿四。大年在每年夏至日，過三天。第一天為接祖日，第二天為祭祖日，第三天是送祖日。小年在冬至日，只過兩天，一天接祖，一天送祖，閏年加祭祖日過三天。按照古老的彝族太陽曆，一年中要過兩次年。彝族“十月太陽曆”是在“十杆測影法”的啟示下，融合我國傳統的圭表和地平日晷系統，直觀、形象地表現出太陽的周日和周年視運動。利用其中地平日晷晷針日影的投向和影端位置即可得出當日所處節令和當地當天地方真太陽時。
