Little Red Riding Hood and the Monsters (1962)
videos
The creepiest, freakiest children's film of them all! This fractured fairy tale tells of the time
Tom Thumb &
Little Red Riding Hood had to face the
Evil Queen and her all-star crew of
Dracula,
Frankenstein, '
The Robot', Carrothead, a Gabba-Gabba Pinhead, and a squabbling two-headed monstrosity. Aiding the forces of good are the rehabilitated
Ferocious Wolf, the
Good Witch and everyone's pal,
Stinky the
Skunk.
Need more?
This incredible
Mexican kids film was dubbed and released for the
U.S. market by
K. Gordon Murray. Made by Churubusco-Azteca studio, this one was already loaded with bizarre visuals before
Murray added the grating, overdubbed voices and cloying songs and created a one-of-a-kind movie-going experience for thousands of poor children abandoned at the
Weekend Matinee while their parents shopped at the
Mall.
The sets are claustrophobic, the costumes look moldy, the actors appear dis-oriented and the audience is (probably) freaked-out. K. Gordon Murray, who brought
America the
Aztec Mummy and the equally remarkable Mexican '
Santa Claus' (1960), delivers a picture that still amazes viewers expecting typically bland, cutesy children's entertainment nearly fifty years after its original release.

1962 Parkersburg High School Big Red Band
videos
This is a clip from 1962 of the
Parkersburg High School Big Red Band. At the time of filming, they were at
Charleston, WV's
Laidley Field for a football playoff. During this time, the band marched 6 steps to every 5 yards, or 30 inches per step.
The clip was originally from Tim Swarr, who graduated in
1963. The camera used was state of the art for its time, but there is no sound to the clip.
Highlights from the clip are as follows:
Start:
Standard block running at 6 steps per 5 yards.
1:19:
This is the end of what appears to be
a 4-way cross-through. It's an extremely complex maneuver that actually involves stepping in-between people's feet.
It's, unfortunately, a bad snip in the video so it's impossible to truly know unless someone was there. From what I see, I'm fairly confident that we're seeing the end of a 4-way cross.
At about 1:29, it shifts to the color guard, with the rifles actually doing rifle spins to change arms (from right to left and then back to right again).
At about 2:08, the band changes form into four giant lines. They will do a giant
Step 2
Drill that Mr.
Schroeder was well-known for making. In this case, the Step 2 becomes a form known as
Moving Diamonds. This is not to be confused with a
Rolling Parallelogram or
Diamond Drill.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Atticus (
Gregory Peck) points out the obvious inequalities in the justice system and asks the jury to look at
Thomas's case with a fair and just eye.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical novel was translated to film in 1962 by
Horton Foote and the producer/director team of
Robert Mulligan and
Alan J. Pakula. Set a small
Alabama town in the
1930s, the story focuses on scrupulously honest, highly respected lawyer
Atticus Finch, magnificently embodied by Gregory Peck.
Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent
Tom Robinson (
Brock Peters), a black man accused of rape. The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter
Scout (
Mary Badham). While
Robinson's trial gives the film its momentum, there are plenty of anecdotal occurrences before and after the court date: Scout's ever-strengthening bond with older brother Jem (
Philip Alford), her friendship with precocious young
Dill Harris (a character based on Lee's childhood chum
Truman Capote and played by
John Megna), her father's no-nonsense reactions to such life-and-death crises as a rampaging mad dog, and especially Scout's reactions to, and relationship with,
Boo Radley (
Robert Duvall in his movie debut), the reclusive "village idiot" who turns out to be her salvation when she is attacked by a venomous bigot. To Kill a Mockingbird won
Academy Awards for
Best Actor (Peck),
Best Adapted Screenplay, and
Best Art Direction.

It's a car that has to be seen to be truly appreciated.
