In internal combustion engines, variable valve timing (VVT) is the process of altering the timing of a valve lift event, and is often used to improve performance, fuel economy or emissions. It is increasingly being used in combination with variable valve lift systems. There are many ways in which this can be achieved, ranging from mechanical devices to electro-hydraulic and camless systems. Increasingly strict emissions regulations are causing many automotive manufacturers to use VVT systems.
Two-stroke engines use a power valve system to get similar results to VVT.
The valves within an internal combustion engine are used to control the flow of the intake and exhaust gases into and out of the combustion chamber. The timing, duration and lift of these valve events has a significant impact on engine performance. Without variable valve timing or variable valve lift, the valve timing must be the same for all engine speeds and conditions, therefore compromises are necessary. An engine equipped with a variable valve timing actuation system is freed from this constraint, allowing performance to be improved over the engine operating range.
In a piston engine, the valve timing is the precise timing of the opening and closing of the valves. In an internal combustion engine these are usually poppet valves and in a steam engine they are usually slide valves or piston valves.
In four-stroke cycle engines and some two-stroke cycle engines, the valve timing is controlled by the camshaft. It can be varied by modifying the camshaft, or it can be varied during engine operation by variable valve timing. It is also affected by the adjustment of the valve mechanism, and particularly by the tappet clearance. However, this variation is normally unwanted.
With traditional fixed valve timing, an engine will have a period of "valve overlap" at the end of the exhaust stroke, when both the intake and exhaust valves are open. The intake valve is opened before the exhaust gases have completely left the cylinder, and their considerable velocity assists in drawing in the fresh charge. Engine designers aim to close the exhaust valve just as the fresh charge from the intake valve reaches it, to prevent either loss of fresh charge or unscavenged exhaust gas. After stripping a brand new Nissan HR16DE engine thought it would be a great chance to go over some of the theory and technology in it. In this first video i will be going into the science behind variable cam phasing which is a form of cam adjustment which in turn adjusts the cam timing when the engine is running. I shall be putting a few more 4 stroke videos up so keep an eye out.

A basic description of direct fuel injection and variable valve timing system operation as found on some modern vehicles.
The VANOS is BMW's version of variable valve timing. It advances or retards the intake and exhaust cams to pull more power out of the engine. It works by using oil pressure to move two pistons in or out and those pistons have o-ring seals in them. The OEM seals were made of buna rubber and they degraded over time. The replacement seals are made of viton and shouldn't have the same problem.
