"This Old House" (or sometimes written "This Ole House") is a popular song by Stuart Hamblen published in 1954. It describes a house in a state of disrepair after its owner's death, and was inspired by a real-life house found by Hamblen and his friends while on a fishing trip. Despite its subject matter, the song is normally performed in an upbeat style. Hamblen intended this to symbolize the joy of the man's going to Heaven.

This song was written one cold wintry day in the High Sierra mountain range when I was on a hunting trip. With a hunting companion, I had gone hack into a remote section of the country. We were at least twenty miles from the nearest road when we came upon an old prospector's cabin. Although there was snow on the ground, there was no smoke coming from the chimney but I knew the master was at home because a large hound dog was lying on the front porch. Upon entering, we found an old man dead in a back room. I can't say how long he had been dead, for he looked like he was just asleep, but because of the severe weather it might have been some time, and the old hound was nearly starved. Smoke-filled room
In U.S. political jargon, a smoke-filled room is a term for a secret political gathering or round table style decision-making process. The phrase is generally used to suggest an inner circle of power brokers, as at a convention. It suggests a cabal of powerful or well-connected, cigar-smoking men meeting privately to nominate a dark horse political candidate or otherwise make decisions without regard for the will of the larger group.
An early example of a smoke-filled room is the Boston Caucus. A report of a 1763 meeting of this group said, "selectmen, assessors, collectors, fire-wards and representatives are regularly chosen [there] before they are chosen in the town ... There they smoke tobacco till you cannot see from one end of the garret to the other." The origin of the term was in a report by Raymond Clapper of United Press, describing rumors of the process by which Warren G. Harding was nominated as Republican candidate for the 1920 Presidential Election. After many indecisive votes, Harding, a relatively minor candidate, was, legend has it, chosen as a compromise candidate by Republican power-brokers in a private meeting in room 404 at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago after the convention had deadlocked.

Stuart Hamblen
Stuart Hamblen (October 20, 1908–March 8, 1989), born Carl Stuart Hamblen, became one of American radio's first singing cowboys in 1926, going on to become a singer, actor, radio show host, and songwriter, later undergoing a Christian conversion and becoming a Temperance movement supporter and recurring candidate for political office. He is best known as the composer of the song This Ole House (1954).
Biography
Hamblen was born to the family of an itinerant Methodist preacher on October 20, 1908, in Kellyville, Texas. He married Suzy Daniels and fathered two children with her. Hamblen's father was Dr. J. H. Hamblen, a minister in the Methodist Church in Texas, who in 1946 founded the Evangelical Methodist Church denomination in Abilene, Texas.
From 1931 Hamblen began hosting the popular radio program Family Album in California, composing music and acting in motion pictures with cowboy stars including Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and John Wayne. In 1934 he became the first artist signed by the American subsidiary of Decca Records.

Smoke
Smoke is a collection of airborne solid and liquid particulates and gases emitted when a material undergoes combustion or pyrolysis, together with the quantity of air that is entrained or otherwise mixed into the mass. It is commonly an unwanted by-product of fires (including stoves, candles, oil lamps, and fireplaces), but may also be used for pest control (fumigation), communication (smoke signals), defensive and offensive capabilities in the military (smoke-screen), cooking, or smoking (tobacco, cannabis, etc.). Smoke is used in rituals where incense, sage, or resin is burned to produce a smell for spiritual purposes. Smoke is sometimes used as a flavoring agent, and preservative for various foodstuffs. Smoke is also a component of internal combustion engine exhaust gas, particularly diesel exhaust.
Smoke inhalation is the primary cause of death in victims of indoor fires. The smoke kills by a combination of thermal damage, poisoning and pulmonary irritation caused by carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and other combustion products.

Weyerhauser lumber distributor, a previous underwriter, by 1989 had donated more than $1,000,000 a year to the show.This Old House is also underwritten by State Farm Insurance and Lumber Liquidators, Inc. Other underwriters throughout the show's tenure included Parks Corporation, Glidden paints, Montgomery Ward, Ace Hardware, Kohler plumbing, Schlage locks, Century 21 Real Estate, Toro lawnmowers/snowblowers, ERA Real Estate, Angie's List, and Mitsubishi Electrics. This song was written one cold wintry day in the High Sierra mountain range when I was on a hunting trip. With a hunting companion, I had gone hack into a remote section of the country. We were at least twenty miles from the nearest road when we came upon an old prospector's cabin. Although there was snow on the ground, there was no smoke coming from the chimney but I knew the master was at home because a large hound dog was lying on the front porch. Upon entering, we found an old man dead in a back room. I can't say how long he had been dead, for he looked like he was just asleep, but because of the severe weather it might have been some time, and the old hound was nearly starved. "This Old House" (or sometimes written "This Ole House") is a popular song by Stuart Hamblen published in 1954. It describes a house in a state of disrepair after its owner's death, and was inspired by a real-life house found by Hamblen and his friends while on a fishing trip. Despite its subject matter, the song is normally performed in an upbeat style. Hamblen intended this to symbolize the joy of the man's going to Heaven.

"This Old House" (or sometimes written "This Ole House") is a popular song by Stuart Hamblen published in 1954. It describes a house in a state of disrepair after its owner's death, and was inspired by a real-life house found by Hamblen and his friends while on a fishing trip. Despite its subject matter, the song is normally performed in an upbeat style. Hamblen intended this to symbolize the joy of the man's going to Heaven.

This song was written one cold wintry day in the High Sierra mountain range when I was on a hunting trip. With a hunting companion, I had gone hack into a remote section of the country. We were at least twenty miles from the nearest road when we came upon an old prospector's cabin. Although there was snow on the ground, there was no smoke coming from the chimney but I knew the master was at home because a large hound dog was lying on the front porch. Upon entering, we found an old man dead in a back room. I can't say how long he had been dead, for he looked like he was just asleep, but because of the severe weather it might have been some time, and the old hound was nearly starved. Harvey cut his first inlay when he was in high school. Harvey’s first “inlay” was actually a cavity the shape of a heart in a banjo fret board made from an ill-advised cherry. Rather than actually cut something to fit he simply filled the cavity with Plastic Wood… Harvey has come a long way since!
Harvey got his real start with inlays while he was trying to build banjos for a living… everyone knows you can’t build a banjo without encrusting it with a fair amount of shiny secretions from the ocean floor! His first attempts were with the mindset that if he couldn’t play better than everybody else he could at least look cooler. It was a great plan but at his very first contest a guy by the name of Steve Arkin showed up with a banjo he had built which looked remarkably like his… Steve won the contest and Harvey didn’t make the finals. Steve had been at it a bit longer and had played with some guy named Monroe in the early 60’s… his first name was Bill…
Harvey still has that banjo and as he looks at it he sees how far he has come from the good ole days where covering as much space as possible was a priority to now where it’s more about seeing how much detail he can fit into the smallest possible space. Harvey’s style has slowly evolved into one where he likes to see just how realistic he can make things look. He calls it photo-realistic but has been told by artists who smear around the limitless color combinations of pigments that to be “photo-realistic” it has to look just like a photo… la dee dah!
Harvey’s pallet of colors is much more restricted so he guesses that’s never going to happen. He can’t come up with a thousand shades of blue and then blend them to smoothly transition. Heck he’s lucky if he can find a half dozen materials that are different shades of blue! So therein lies the greatest challenge in “photo-realistic” inlay, finding the right materials to match the colors and textures you are trying to create. Since more often than not that material doesn’t really exist Harvey spends a lot of time making his own material by creating mosaics or custom blending things like jewelry grade epoxy or even a kids favorite, Sculpy clay. As you look through Harvey’s website you will find several detailed explanations of how some of these processes take place to create the near “photo-realistic” effects that sets his work apart from most other inlay artist.
