Legendary Journey guitarist Neal Schon has given us the keys to his vault. We've convinced him to let go of some very personal instruments. Check out these four one-of-a-kind guitars, built to Neal's specifications and finished and set up by Gary Brawer. These are available for sale for a short window of time, only at Bananas!
This is the "Lights" Stratocaster! This guitar was used on all of the early 80's recordings on some of the biggest hits by Journey. Neal Schon played this guitar on hit songs and records such as Escape, Frontiers, Infinity, Faithfully, Lights, and Send Her My Love. Featuring a refinished Pearl white, early Floyd Rose bridge, a 1963 neck, and a PAF pickup "in the back."

Schon’s well-documented history of guitars includes a plethora of Gibsons and Kramers, but his current #1 is a NS-15 Neal Schon Signature Model from PRS (he also carries a few NS-14s on the road as well).
Every aspect of the design had Schon’s fingerprints on it and it went through many incarnations before finally settling into the current specs. The NS-15 is strung up with a set of .009-.042 D’Addario strings (he ups the 6th string to .046 for dropped tunings).
Most of Schon’s guitars feature a Fernandes Sustainer as well as a DiMarzio Fast Track 2 pickup in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. He uses medium Dunlop celluloid picks, although recently he’s been using his fingertips more during solos—which he explains has opened up different tones.
Even though Schon has a guitar boat loaded with PRS guitars, his go-to on “Lights” is a relic’d Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster. The bridge pickup and headstock is reversed and the relic job is straight from the custom shop.

Guitar legend Neal Schön has joined forces with bassist Marco Mendoza (Black Star Riders, Ted Nugent, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy) and drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Hardline) to create a unique body of work with jazz and blues-inspired virtuosic hard rock playing, entitled SO U. The new album features Schön, Mendoza and Castronovo splitting vocal and writing duties, with many of the tracks also co-written by Night Ranger/Damn Yankee's songwriter, singer and bassist Jack Blades.
Neal Schön commented, "This is a great new record that features all three of us -- Deen, Marco and myself -- sharing lead vocals. Enjoy!"
Best known as founding member and lead guitarist of Journey, Neal Schön has enjoyed a remarkable career as one of rock n' roll's top virtuosos, with a hand in creating some of the most popular songs of all time. Beginning his career more than 35 years ago in the San Francisco Bay area, the 15-year-old guitar prodigy left home to join Santana. Schön moved on in 1973 to form Journey. With Journey and other projects, he has earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 platinum and gold albums, was awarded the prestigious "Legend Of Live Award" at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005 and was individually inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall Of Fame in 2013. The album features four hit Billboard Hot 100 singles - "Don't Stop Believin'" (#9), "Who's Crying Now" (#4), "Still They Ride" (#19) and "Open Arms" (#2) - plus rock radio staples like "Stone in Love", "Escape" (title track), and "Mother, Father".
Neal Schon was born at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. His father was an accomplished musician, arranger, composer and played and taught all reed instruments with emphasis on jazz tenor saxophone; his mother was a big band singer. Schon first picked up the guitar at the age of 5. A quick learner, he joined Santana as a teenage prodigy at the age of 15. He went to Aragon High School in San Mateo, but dropped out (with his parents' blessing) before graduating. Schon had famously been asked by Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominos, but since Santana called him first, he decided to join Santana for the album Santana III. Schon also played in Azteca before moving on in 1973 to form Journey, a group he continues to lead today.
Schon's guitar style has been described as soulful, taking inspiration from 1960s-era soul singers such as Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, and blending it with blues runs similar to B. B. King. He was influenced by guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery.
In addition to his five solo albums and 14 studio albums with Journey, his work also includes: a pair of albums with keyboardist Jan Hammer, short-term collaborations with Sammy Hagar (HSAS and Planet Us) and Paul Rodgers, stints with Bad English (a supergroup that featured Journey's Jonathan Cain and Deen Castronovo and Jonathan Cain's former Babys bandmates John Waite and Ricky Phillips) and Hardline (which also featured Deen Castronovo).

Check out these four one-of-a-kind guitars, built to Neal's specifications and finished and set up by Gary Brawer. These are available for sale for a short window of time, only at Bananas! This is the "Lights" Stratocaster! This guitar was used on all of the early 80's recordings on some of the biggest hits by Journey. Neal Schon played this guitar on hit songs and records such as Escape, Frontiers, Infinity, Faithfully, Lights, and Send Her My Love. Featuring a refinished Pearl white, early Floyd Rose bridge, a 1963 neck, and a PAF pickup "in the back." -

Every aspect of the design had Schon’s fingerprints on it and it went through many incarnations before finally settling into the current specs. The NS-15 is strung up with a set of .009-.042 D’Addario strings (he ups the 6th string to .046 for dropped tunings). Most of Schon’s guitars feature a Fernandes Sustainer as well as a DiMarzio Fast Track 2 pickup in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. Schon’s well-documented history of guitars includes a plethora of Gibsons and Kramers, but his current #1 is a NS-15 Neal Schon Signature Model from PRS (he also carries a few NS-14s on the road as well).
Every aspect of the design had Schon’s fingerprints on it and it went through many incarnations before finally settling into the current specs. The NS-15 is strung up with a set of .009-.042 D’Addario strings (he ups the 6th string to .046 for dropped tunings).
Most of Schon’s guitars feature a Fernandes Sustainer as well as a DiMarzio Fast Track 2 pickup in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. He uses medium Dunlop celluloid picks, although recently he’s been using his fingertips more during solos—which he explains has opened up different tones.
Even though Schon has a guitar boat loaded with PRS guitars, his go-to on “Lights” is a relic’d Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster. The bridge pickup and headstock is reversed and the relic job is straight from the custom shop.

Guitar legend Neal Schön has joined forces with bassist Marco Mendoza (Black Star Riders, Ted Nugent, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy) and drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Hardline) to create a unique body of work with jazz and blues-inspired virtuosic hard rock playing, entitled SO U. The new album features Schön, Mendoza and Castronovo splitting vocal and writing duties, with many of the tracks also co-written by Night Ranger/Damn Yankee's songwriter, singer and bassist Jack Blades.
Neal Schön commented, "This is a great new record that features all three of us -- Deen, Marco and myself -- sharing lead vocals. Enjoy!"
Best known as founding member and lead guitarist of Journey, Neal Schön has enjoyed a remarkable career as one of rock n' roll's top virtuosos, with a hand in creating some of the most popular songs of all time. Beginning his career more than 35 years ago in the San Francisco Bay area, the 15-year-old guitar prodigy left home to join Santana. Schön moved on in 1973 to form Journey. With Journey and other projects, he has earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 platinum and gold albums, was awarded the prestigious "Legend Of Live Award" at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005 and was individually inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall Of Fame in 2013. Schon had famously been asked by Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominos, but since Santana called him first, he decided to join Santana for the album Santana III. Schon also played in Azteca before moving on in 1973 to form Journey, a group he continues to lead today.
Schon's guitar style has been described as soulful, taking inspiration from 1960s-era soul singers such as Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, and blending it with blues runs similar to B. B. King. He was influenced by guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery.

Neal George Joseph Schon (born February 27, 1954) is an American rock guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist best known for his work with the bands Journey and Bad English. He is Journey's only constant member, having participated in every album and tour to date. He was also a member of the rock band Santana before forming Journey.
Inducted into the the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame August 23, 2013.

During the more orchestral segments of the Journey set, you'll find Neal Schon playing his 18.5"-scale Veillette Gryphon High 12 acoustic-electric. ("That guitar is tuned really high and has lots of unison strings, so it rings beautifully," says Schon's tech, Adam Day). And when it's time to play "Lights" or other Strat-powered Journey classics, a Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster finds its way into Schon's hands. But for the bulk of a Journey concert, Schon's main guitar is a cherry sunburst flametop Gibson Neal Schon Signature Custom Les Paul. And if you think the Floyd Rose locking bridge and nut are the only custom features, look a little closer.
The only truly standard features on a Neal Schon Paul are the tuning machines and the Gibson BurstBucker Pro bridge humbucker. The neck heel has been heavily sculpted—almost erased—to grant easy access to the high frets, and the fretboard is angled more parallel with the body than those on standard Les Pauls so that Floyd bridge sits flush. The neck pickup cavity is occupied by a single-coil-sized DiMarzio Fast Track 2 humbucker and a Fernandes Sustainer Driver. The knobs are widely spaced and have been rewired to include a master volume, a push/pull master tone (the pull position activates a Vari-Tone-type circuit that gives Schon wah sounds without a wah pedal), and a master Sustainer volume. The mini-toggle switches behind the tailpiece control the Sustainer settings. And if you take an MRI of Schon's cherry sunburst Paul, you'll discover it has been chambered for weight reduction. "Its taken many years to develop this guitar with Gibson, but it was worth it," says Schon. "It just works."
Resonant with lyrical, B.B. King-style vibrato and ornamented with R&B; trills, Schon's guitar playing is still very much alive with the simple blues mojo that gained him notice in the Bay Area clubs when he was still in his early teens. Its the delivery medium thats gotten more complex. When Schon's tech, Adam Day, is asked if he can think of a more complex stage rig, he can only cite the Edge's famously elaborate U2 rig.
Schon's setup starts a Lectrosonics wireless. ("Neal had been on the wire for a while," says Day, "but when he heard this system, he liked the sound enough to go wireless again.") From the receiver back in his amp racks, Schons signal passes through 45-foot Mogami cables to and from his pedalboard, which includes a Dunlop Buddy Guy Wah, a Boss compressor pedal used mostly for Strat solos, and Xotic AC- and RC-Booster pedals. ("Lectrosonics systems tend to run a little bright, so the extra capacitance created by all that long cable actually serves to balance out the sound a bit.")
A TC Electronic G-System controller at Schon's feet handles all MIDI-implemented effects and amp channel changes, an expression pedal controls the overall delay level (the delay time seems to work nicely for most songs when set to 600ms), and Schon uses a Gibson Digital Echoplex to create the loops he solos over during instrumental interludes between songs.
Thats the simple part.
Things get more intricate back at the amp racks where Schon's signal is split five ways courtesy of Framptone Amp Switcher and 3-Banger pedals. One signal feeds a drawer-mounted Boss GT-6 processor that runs through a Demeter tube preamp into a Roland M120 line mixer feeding Schons in-ear monitors as well as a Marshall Dual MonoBlock power amplifier driving two 1960B 4x12 cabinets. Schons signal is also split between two Marshall JVM heads with G-System effects in their loops, and two Diezel VH4 heads running in stereo courtesy of an Eventide Eclipse processor in their loops (used primarily to fatten things up with a little detune). Each amp drives a separate 4x12. And because one of the Diezels is run flat out to get a full sound, its cabinet is turned backwards and miked up behind the stage, thus keeping Schon's stage volume down.

Summary:
This is among the earliest known professional recordings of Journey, from long before it ascended to the top of the AOR radio charts with a long string of FM hits. The group had formed eight months earlier when young guitar superstar Neal Schon decided to form his own group after departing Santana in 1972. He eventually convinced singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie to follow suit, making Journey the Bay Area's first handpicked supergroup. The material here appeared on the band's debut Columbia Records album, and appears to be more of a marriage of progressive rock and jazz fusion than the pop-driven hard rock format that it would later embrace with Perry.
The Journey heard here was more about musical acrobatics and frantic solos than it is about melodies and well constructed rhythms. That skill would come later, after Perry joined, Tickner departed, and Dunbar, who had bolted to join Jefferson Starship, was replaced by Steve Smith.
The hit making version of the band would remain together until 1987. Today, Schon and Valory remain in a version of the band that has virtually no musical connection to the band recorded for this show.

An electric guitar lesson on how to play the guitar solo to "Anyway You Want It" by Journey played by their excellent guitarist Neal Schon.
This is a fantastic guitar solo! It has a little of everything, melodic lines, great vibrato, some really tough bends and of course 2 or 3 really killer fast licks. It's definitely for advanced players and will be challenging even for them! Learning this is a really great insight into playing those super fast triplet type runs, something that Neal Schon does a lot.
I hope you enjoy the lesson and that it in some way helps you out on this very tough solo!
I get a lot of questions about my sound so here's what I'm using:
My amp is an Egnater Renegade head through a Marshall 1960b cabinet. I use a TC Electronics Nova System through the loop for effects. I also use a BB preamp on some lead tones and sometimes (rarely) a Boss CS-3 compressor.The reverb is from the amp. My wah is a Dunlop MC404 CAE Dual Inductor, REALLY great pedal! I also use a Polytune tuner which is fantastic.
For this solo I ran the amp at full gain. The delay was around 450ms and a 30% mix. It's just the amp and guitar with no pedals except the delay and a bit of reverb. The amp volume was really low, you could talk over it!
My guitar is a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I have Suhr Aldrich pickups on it. I have them coil split, but for this video they were in full humbucker mode.

And so the story goes…
“By the time the Dominos arrived in Berkeley in October 1970, Eric [Clapton] had heard about a young teenage kid called Neil Schon, who was creating quite a stir on the local scene. He was recording with Santana at the Village Recorder in San Francisco and Eric and some of the Dominos went down to check him out. Before long the Santana band and Eric and company were jamming away.
“What you’ll hear here is the result of that informal meeting. Eric was certainly impressed and invited young Neil to play with him and the Dominos at their Berkeley shows. The shows were so good that Eric asked him to join the band. He declined and went on to be a key member in Santana and later formed Journey. He remains one of the world’s most inventive guitarists.”
This session has been circulating since 2002 when Mid Valley put it out. While the jam did take place, some fans felt that November 18 might be the correct date since Neal Schon played with the Dominos on the 19th. Another fan mentioned that the session involved the Santana band and only Clapton and not the rest of the Dominos (in spite of what the title says). Listening to the disc, one is likely to agree that this was probably the case.
By October or November 1970, Santana (the band) were in superb form - they already had two hit albums under their belt and, though untitled here, Jam #3 is an instrumental version of Everything’s Coming Our Way, which would appear on Santana III (1971). And even then, Santana was already trying out jazz - Jam #6 sounds like free form jazz led by a blistering trumpet attack. And Clapton, who was on top of the game, had Layla in the can - the album would be released by the December 1970.

“What you’ll hear here is the result of that informal meeting. Eric was certainly impressed and invited young Neil to play with him and the Dominos at their Berkeley shows. The shows were so good that Eric asked him to join the band. He declined and went on to be a key member in Santana and later formed Journey. He remains one of the world’s most inventive guitarists.”
This session has been circulating since 2002 when Mid Valley put it out. While the jam did take place, some fans felt that November 18 might be the correct date since Neal Schon played with the Dominos on the 19th. Another fan mentioned that the session involved the Santana band and only Clapton and not the rest of the Dominos (in spite of what the title says). Listening to the disc, one is likely to agree that this was probably the case.
By October or November 1970, Santana (the band) were in superb form - they already had two hit albums under their belt and, though untitled here, Jam #3 is an instrumental version of Everything’s Coming Our Way, which would appear on Santana III (1971). And even then, Santana was already trying out jazz - Jam #6 sounds like free form jazz led by a blistering trumpet attack. And Clapton, who was on top of the game, had Layla in the can - the album would be released by the December 1970.

Neal Schon played one of the best solos I think I've ever heard him do, and he came up with the riff for that song and then we wrote it and it ended up being a little bit different, but it has that roll of Santana, it's nothing but a groove on a heavy line....
