USMC Optimal CFT MUF Strategy

1stLt Graves and MACS-4 Det Bravo Iwakuni, Japan look at the CFT IOT help achieve the best score possible for the MUF (Maneuver Under Fire). This is not the only way to run the CFT! If you can perform a perfect score already, great job keep up the good work. If you want to try and improve your score and see where you benefit the most focusing on certain parts of the MUF this video is for you. *****This video is not to be used as a substitute for physically preparing yourself for the CFT!!!***** Optimal CFT MUF breakdown: 1)25 yd. sprint: Jog this portion 2) High Crawl: Casual pace saving energy for later portions of the MUF costing you roughly 2 seconds 3) Modified High Crawl: Moving faster here can save you 4 seconds 4) 25 yd. cone zig zag: DO NOT exert too much energy during this portion of the MUF! If you spring or jog with round turns you are going to complete this portion is the exact same time. Take your time here and try and maintain a constant speed throughout this portion... Remember round turns and maintaining one speed is ideal here. 5) Buddy drag: Take large steps here saving as much energy as possible for the buddy carry. As the buddy cross your arms with your right arm lying on top of your left arm, and have your ankles on top of each other and whichever foot is on the ground POINT THAT TOE!!! Imagine your foot being like the rudder on a boat, this is going to cause less drag or friction for the person pulling you. The real time saver during this part relies completely on the changeover. a) The Marine performing the drag, hold on to your buddies right wrist/forearm and when he/she is instructed to stand, DO NOT LET GO of their arm. b) As the buddy stands they need to ROTATE OUTBOARD (to their LEFT) c) Picking their (the buddie) right arm straight into the air while dropping their left arm to their side. This is going to allow the Marine performing the event to help pick you up and put you on their shoulder without the confusion that normally occurs during this part. ****You and your buddy should practice the change over prior to the start of the CFT. There is plenty of time between the ammo can lifts, and the start of the MUF for you and your partner to practice this change over!!! 6)65 yd. buddy carry: This is the first time you need to put 100% effort into your MUF. This is a HUGE time difference between running and trying to recover during this portion. If you run with your buddy here you can cut off roughly 25 seconds. **** This is a small but important thing to remember during this portion. RUN DIRECTLY to your AMMO CANS it may only save you a second or two, but that could be the difference between a 300 and a 299. 7) 50 yd. ammo can carry: After you place (drop) your buddy you need to again sprint the next 50 yds. because again this can save you anywhere between 15-20 seconds. Just know that if you need to recover as soon as you finish this 50 yd. spring you are going to have the opportunity to try and recover prior to the grenade toss. 8) Ammo cans zig-zag: The difference between sprinting and waking here is roughly 7 seconds. If you need to recover DO IT NOW! If walking would cost you 7 seconds a very light jog would only cost you about 3-4 seconds. This is the time to recover before your grenade toss because this toss is one of the most important parts of the MUF. 9) Grenade Toss/Push ups: If you successfully toss the grenade you are going to have a (-5) deduction to your overall time. If you miss the toss you are going to receive (+5) seconds. Do not rush this part of the MUF it is going to be a 10 seconds difference depending on the outcome. There is no reason to put all the effort to achieve the best score possible, to lose so much time because you rushed your throw. *****Ask your monitor if they would have an issue if you wanted to go to the grenade prior to the start of the event (during the ammo can lift) and maybe throw a couple times to get use to the weight of the fake grenade***** 10) Zig-Zag and Final Spring: This is the final part of the CFT. Put the rest of your effort here IOT achieve the best score possible. If you only have a minimum amount of energy left use it on the straight away. If you CAN spring the whole part do it! DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT THE ONLY WAY TO PERFORM THE CFT MUF. IF YOU THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO ACHIEVE THE BEST SCORE, DO SO. IF YOU CAN PERFORM CERTAIN PARTS BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE MARINE, FOCUS YOUR ENERGY DURING THOSE PORTIONS. WE SIMPLY TRIED TO HELP GIVE YOU A PLAN GOING INTO THE MUF. THIS DOES NOT SUBSTITUTE PHYSICALLY PREPARING YOURSELF FOR THE CFT.
