Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. There are three accepted living species of Trichechidae, representing three of the four living species in the order Sirenia: the Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis), the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), and the West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis). They measure up to 13 feet (4.0 m) long, weigh as much as 1,300 pounds (590 kg), and have paddle-like flippers. The name manatí comes from the Taíno, a pre-Columbian people of the Caribbean, meaning "breast".
Manatees comprise three of the four living species in the order Sirenia. The fourth is the Eastern Hemisphere's dugong. The Sirenia are thought to have evolved from four-legged land mammals over 60 million years ago, with the closest living relatives being the Proboscidea (elephants) and Hyracoidea (hyraxes).
The Amazonian's hair color is brownish gray, and they have thick wrinkled skin often with coarse hair, or "whiskers". Photos are rare; although very little is known about this species, scientists think they are similar to West Indian manatees.
The West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) or "sea cow" is a manatee, and the largest surviving member of the aquatic mammal order Sirenia (which also includes the dugong and the extinct Steller's sea cow).
The West Indian manatee is a species distinct from the Amazonian manatee (T. inunguis) and the African manatee (T. senegalensis). Based on genetic and morphological studies, the West Indian manatee is divided into two subspecies, the Florida manatee (T. m. latirostris) and the Antillean or Caribbean manatee (T. m. manatus). However, recent genetic (mtDNA) research suggests that the West Indian manatee actually consists of three groups, which are more or less geographically distributed as: (1) Florida and the Greater Antilles; (2) Mexico, Central America and northern South America; and (3) northeastern South America.
Both the Florida manatee and the Antillean manatee are endangered and have been of great conservation concern to federal, state, private, and nonprofit organizations to protect these species from natural and human-induced threats.
outdoortravelchannel.tv - Endangered Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) are present in Kings Bay's warm, spring-fed waters year-round; in winter, though, their numbers swell substantially as they seek refuge from the Gulf of Mexico's chilly waters. Crystal River operators offer swimming/snorkelling tours to sites such as Three Sisters Springs, where clear waters provide a magnificent opportunity to view these aquatic mammals in their natural habitat. In March 2012, the US Fish and Wildlife Service established a manatee refuge in the waters of Kings Bay, including its tributaries and connected waters. Prohibited activities include: (i) Chasing or pursuing manatees (ii) Disturbing or touching a resting or feeding manatee(s). (iii) Diving from the surface onto a resting or ...

As you’ll soon discover, getting some of the shots of this animal took a great deal of time, patience and luck…but the entire experience as a whole was absolutely incredible. The Manatees just LOVED being around our crew...however it's quite possible that they loved giving their attention to the video cameras even more! Original Smush. There was a Manatee at the Mote Aquarium that kept smushing it's face against the glass. Looks like lots of people are copying this now some of them even ripping off footage from each other.
First - thanks so much for watching this video! Second - thanks even more for SHARING! This was filmed on one amazing day in Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River, Florida. The music is by my good friends Human Agency (http://humanagency.bandcamp.com), currently blowing up the Denver music scene. This day was a dream, this trip was serendipitous...every step fell into place like clockwork. Despite manatees not being commonly seen in the area for months, the one day I show up to Crystal River so do the sea cows. I saw huge males, tiny babies, and playful teenage manatees all in Three Sisters Springs at the same time. I also interacted with the fauna of the ecosystem, including snappers, bluegills, and cormorants, who were busy hunting fish. This experience stands out as one of my favor...

He never knew you
Neither did I
Year 1942
She was born and she died
Just a baby
Not much of a life
The father, a drunk and his poor wife
The memory found late one night
Her name was Judith white
Her memory found once more
Her name was Judith white....
These people made me
Now its history
These people made me
Now it’s family
She’s gone to heaven
Won’t be back again
Never knew her
But I won’t forget
Family history and family past
Life is tragic but what a blast
Her memory found late one night
Her name was Judith white
Her memory found once more
Her name was Judith white....
It’s nice to know where you’re from
It’s nice to know where you belong
