Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday urged the United States to extradite the preacher Fethullah Gulen, who he accuses of masterminding the failed coup, to face justice in Turkey.

Here are the main developments so far:

  • Factions of the armed forces attempted to seize power Friday night, resulting in gunfire and explosions in Ankara and Istanbul.
  • Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Saturday that at least 200 people have been killed and 1,440 wounded.
  • The Turkish PM said 2,839 dissident soldiers had now been detained.
  • Soldiers took control of the main TRT state television station and witnesses reported that tanks fired on the parliament building Friday night.
  • Yildirim blamed the coup on loyalists of US-based cleric and opposition figure Fethullah Gulen. His movement denied involvement.
  • International leaders voiced their support for Turkey’s government.
