Samuel Booker Roberts, Jr. (12 May 1921 – 27 September 1942) was a U.S. Navy coxswain who was killed in the Battle of Guadalcanal, and became the namesake of three U.S. Navy warships.
Roberts was born in San Francisco, California, on May 12, 1921. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1939 and was called to active duty in 1940. Roberts served aboard the USS California (BB-44) and the transport USS Heywood (AP-12), before being transferred to the cargo transport USS Bellatrix (AK-20, later AKA-20).
In 1942, Bellatrix was assigned to Task Group Four and became part of the Guadalcanal Assault Force. As a coxswain for the Bellatrix's assault boats, Roberts helped ferry supplies from the transport ships to a tenuous beachhead.
After the ships withdrew in the face of Japanese attacks that began 7 August 1942, Roberts volunteered for duty on the island of Guadalcanal, where he was attached to a beachmaster unit at Lunga Point. The unit, which included Navy and United States Coast Guard sailors, transported Marines and their supplies to beaches along the island's northern coast, and also evacuated wounded Marines.
Samuel (/ˈsæm.juː.əl/;Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֵל, Modern Shmu'el, Tiberian Šəmûʼēl; Arabic: صموئيل Ṣamuil; Greek: Σαμουήλ Samouēl; Latin: Samvel; Strong's: Shemuwel), literally meaning "Name of God" in Hebrew, is a leader of ancient Israel in the Books of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible. He is also known as a prophet and is mentioned in the second chapter of the Qur'an, although not by name.
His status, as viewed by rabbinical literature, is that he was the last of the Hebrew Judges and the first of the major prophets who began to prophesy inside the Land of Israel. He was thus at the cusp between two eras. According to the text of the Books of Samuel, he also anointed the first two kings of the Kingdom of Israel: Saul and David.
Samuel's mother was Hannah and his father was Elkanah. Elkanah lived at Rama-thaim in the district of Zuph. His genealogy is also found in a pedigree of the Kohathites (1 Chron. 6:3-15) and in that of Heman, his great-grandson (ib. vi. 18-22). According to the genealogical tables, Elkanah was a Levite - a fact otherwise not mentioned in the books of Samuel. The fact that Elkanah, a Levite, was denominated an Ephraimite is analogous to the designation of a Levite belonging to Judah (Judges 17:7, for example).

Condoleezza "Condi" Rice (/ˌkɒndəˈliːzə/; born November 14, 1954) is an American political scientist and diplomat. She served as the 66th United States Secretary of State, and was the second person to hold that office in the administration of President George W. Bush. Rice was the first female African-American secretary of state, as well as the second African American secretary of state (after Colin Powell), and the second female secretary of state (after Madeleine Albright). Rice was President Bush's National Security Advisor during his first term, making her the first woman to serve in that position. Before joining the Bush administration, she was a professor of political science at Stanford University where she served as Provost from 1993 to 1999. Rice also served on the National Security Council as the Soviet and Eastern Europe Affairs Advisor to President George H.W. Bush during the dissolution of the Soviet Union and German reunification.
Following her confirmation as Secretary of State, Rice pioneered the policy of Transformational Diplomacy directed toward expanding the number of responsible democratic governments in the world and especially in the Greater Middle East. That policy faced challenges as Hamas captured a popular majority in Palestinian elections, and influential countries including Saudi Arabia and Egypt maintained authoritarian systems with U.S. support. She has logged more miles traveling than any other Secretary of State. While in the position, she chaired the Millennium Challenge Corporation's board of directors.

PART 1 OF 2: The captain of the USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS, Paul X. Rinn, USN, and shipbuilders from Bath Iron Works, Maine, discuss the near-miraculous story of how the ship was saved after it struck a mine in the Persian Gulf in 1988. Not a single life was lost from the crew of more than 200 sailors.
In summer 2011, the Mayport, FL-based frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts sailed across the Atlantic for a mission called Africa Partnership Station, during which they worked with the navies and coast guards of friendly nations in the region. Military reporter Michael Jordan of Cosmos Mariner Productions produced a two-part series (each one half hour) for WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, FL.
The Battle of Leyte Gulf - Oct 1944 (the 2nd battle of the Philippine Sea) This U.S. Navy documentary depicts the sea Battle at Leyte Gulf during the Allied landings at Mindoro in the Philippines during World War II. During this battle, a small group of American escort carriers designated Taffy 3 engaged the Japanese fleet's main body, including the super battleship Yamato. That these lightly armed ships and their air crews managed to hold off Admiral Kurita's vanguard and prevent an assault on the vulnerable ships supporting the Allied ground invasion, remains one of WWII's most incredible, and most gallant moments. Some of the vessels that may appear in the film include Taffy 3's carrier USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73), and the destroyers USS Johnston (DD-557), USS Hoel (DD-533), USS Heerman (...

Episode 24 of Know Your Ship! In this educational video I cover the John C. Butler class destroyer escorts commissioned by the United States Navy during World War 2. These destroyer escorts were small ships that were primarily tasked with escorting convoys and picket duty. They were not meant to engage enemy fleet units. The most famous ship of the class is probably the USS Samuel B. Roberts, which as a member of Taffy 3 fought a David vs. Goliath battle against the Japanese Center Force at the Battle of Samar. These ships will not be in World of Warships, so this is an episode dedicated to an awesome little ship. Torpedo boat destroyers, destroyers, or (slang) tin cans served all of the major sea powers well during WW II. They were the smallest, general purpose, ocean-going warships of the various blue water fleets and they often took heavy losses in action. That was perhaps inevitable, as destroyers were employed in many roles besides hunting torpedo boats and submarines, their original purposes. On April 18, 1988, in retaliation for the mining of her sister ship, the USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG-58), the USS Simpson (FFG-56)destroyed the Iranian oil platform Sirri, effectively carrying out orders from President Reagan. An hour later she became the first US Navy ship in history to fire a surface to surface missile in combat when she was fired at by an Iranian Frigate and returned 4 missiles successfully, destroying the enemy and ensuring a successful mission. This video starts with an award ceremony where the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral William James Crowe, Jr. visits the Simpson shortly after the events of April 18, 1988. Some very grainy video that I left in because you can still hear the Admiral's speech to the crew. This is followed by a ships tour for the...
