Ever since its establishment in 1973, Qatar University has given education a strong position in the country's expan- sion. It has been a successful mission from its first college with some 150 students to today's with seven colleges and 8,000 students. As the university expands, so the demands on the library increase. At the beginning of 2012 a new, larger library opened its doors to students, researchers and teachers.
The library plays an important role in supporting the high academic standards of the university. This high standard is reflected in the design and function of the shelving. The quality and finish is high, both for the physical environ- ment, as well as for the technical infrastructure.

Qatar (/ˈkæˌtɑːr/,
i/ˈkɑːtɑːr/, /ˈkɑːtər/ or i/kəˈtɑːr/;Arabic: قطر Qaṭar [ˈqɑtˤɑr]; local vernacular pronunciation: [ɡɪtˤɑr]), officially the State of Qatar (Arabic: دولة قطر Dawlat Qaṭar), is a sovereign country located in Southwest Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. A strait in the Persian Gulf separates Qatar from the nearby island of Bahrain, as well as sharing sea borders with the United Arab Emirates and Iran.
Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. Qatar has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-19th century. Qatar is a hereditary constitutional monarchy and its head of state is Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The constitution was overwhelmingly approved in a constitutional referendum, with almost 98% in favour. In 2013, Qatar's total population was 1.8 million: 278,000 Qatari citizens and 1.5 million expatriates. After Saudi Arabia and Oman, Qatar is the most conservative society in the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Qatar University
Qatar University (Arabic: جامعة قطر; transliterated: Jami'at Qatar) is a public university in Qatar, located on the northern outskirts of the capital Doha. As of 2014, there are over 16,000 students. Courses are taught in Arabic (in education, arts and social sciences courses) or English (in natural sciences, engineering and business courses). The university is the only government university in the country. The university hosts seven colleges – Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Law, Sharia and Islamic Studies, and a College of Pharmacy – with a total of almost 8000 students at a 13:1 student-teacher ratio.
Students entering the university are placed in a “Foundation Program”, which ensures the acquirement of skills such as math, English, and computer technology.
Many of its academic departments have received or are currently under evaluation for accreditation from a number of organizations. In addition to undergraduate academics, QU has a research infrastructure including research labs, an ocean vessel, technical equipment and a library housing thousands of books, including a collection of rare manuscripts.

01. Museum of Islamic Art
A museum located on the Corniche. The iconic building was designed by architect I. M. Pei. Represents Islamic art from three continents over 1,400 years. Influenced by ancient Islamic architecture, yet has a unique design.
02. Souq Waqif
A souq. Transliterated to "the standing market," the souq is noted for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Also home to dozens of restaurants and Shisha lounges. Was renovated in 2006 to conserve its traditional architectural style.
03. Doha Corniche
A waterfront promenade extending for several kilometers along Doha Bay. Used to be an empty stretch of walkway in which the only visible edifice was a Sheraton Hotel, but development has increased in the 21st century with dozens of skyscrapers being built towards the north of the Corniche.
04. The Pearl-Qatar
An artificial island spanning nearly four million square metres. It is the first land in Qatar to be available for freehold ownership by foreign nationals. The name "The Pearl" was chosen because the island is being built on one of Qatar's previous major pearl diving sites.
05. Villaggio Mall
A shopping mall located in the Aspire Zone. Inside, the interiors are Italianate-themed both as an Italian hill town, but also with a 150-meter long indoor canal with gondolas. Has over 200 stores, including many famous brands in the U.S., U.K., Italian and German markets.
06. Barzan Towers
Aso known as the Umm Salal Mohammed Fort Towers, are watchtowers that were built in the late 19th century and renovated in 1910 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani. The towers measure 16 metres (52.49 ft) high. The fort links to two other fortified buildings towards the west and another tower towards the north.
07. Aspire Tower
Also known as The Torch Doha, is a 300-metre-tall (980 ft) skyscraper hotel located in the Aspire Zone complex. Served as the focal point for the 15th Asian Games hosted by Qatar in December 2006. Currently the tallest structure and building in Doha and Qatar.
08. Qatar Motor Show
An annual international motor show. Held each January at the Doha Exhibitions Centre. Features new models as well as supercars, concept cars, custom cars from style centers and automotive designers. Outdoor demonstrations of motocross and drifting are featured as well as test driving.
09. Al Bidda
A neighborhood of Doha. It was previously the largest town in Qatar in the 19th century. Was incorporated as a district in the Doha municipality in the late 20th century.
10. Doha Golf Club
An 18-hole, 7,374-yard, par 72 championship course that was designed by Peter Harradine. One of the first grass golf course ever built in the Middle East. Open to nonmembers, it has a 2 808 yards long floodlit nine-hole academy course, and a clubhouse with three restaurants and a golf shop.

Texas A&M; University at Qatar graduated more than 100 engineers at its spring commencement ceremony (7 May) evening at the Ceremonial Court in Education City. The ceremony celebrated the branch campus’ new spring graduates with approximately 105 degrees across four engineering graduates and its chemical engineering graduate program. These graduates mark an achievement for Texas A&M; at Qatar: more than 600 degrees awarded since its inception. During the celebration, Texas A&M; at Qatar acknowledged its comprehensive growth from its inaugural class of 29 students in 2003 to one that boasts more than 500 current students, as well as a graduate program and more than $196 million in research.
