The Housing Corporation was the non-departmental public body that funded new affordable housing and regulated housing associations in England. It was established by the Housing Act 1964. On 1 December 2008, its functions were transferred to two new organisations, the Homes and Communities Agency and the Tenant Services Authority.
The last Chairman of the Housing Corporation was Peter Dixon, and his deputy was Shaukat Moledina.
On 17 January 2007, Ruth Kelly announced proposals to bring together the investment functions of the Housing Corporation, English Partnerships and parts of the Department for Communities and Local Government to form a new unified housing and regeneration agency.
In the following months, Professor Martin Cave, Director of the Centre for Management under Regulation at University of Warwick, led the most comprehensive review of English housing regulation for 30 years. Reporting in June, the Cave Review recommended that a new regulatory agency be set up, separating the regulation and investment responsibilities of the Housing Corporation.
A corporation is a company or group of people authorized to act as a single entity (legally a person) and recognized as such in law. Early incorporated entities were established by charter (i.e. by an ad hoc act granted by a monarch or passed by a parliament or legislature). Most jurisdictions now allow the creation of new corporations through registration.
Corporations come in many different types but are usually divided by the law of the jurisdiction where they are chartered into two kinds: by whether or not they can issue stock, or by whether or not they are for profit.
Where local law distinguishes corporations by ability to issue stock, corporations allowed to do so are referred to as "stock corporations", ownership of the corporation is through stock, and owners of stock are referred to as "stockholders." Corporations not allowed to issue stock are referred to as "non-stock" corporations, those who are considered the owners of the corporation are those who have obtained membership in the corporation, and are referred to as a "member" of the corporation.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), a Crown corporation of the Government of Canada, through the 1944 National Housing Act, the federal government already played a leading role in Canadian housing programs. As World War II veterans returned, CMHC's programs supported social and rental housing and created public housing program for low-income families. New housing was offered very low cost mortgages, small down payments and easy terms. It later built and/or funded urban renewal projects in Canada's cities. CMHC is regulated under the Financial Administration Act, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Act, and the National Housing Act. By 2013 the major role of the CMHC was to "improve housing quality, choice and affordability for all Canadians." With an estimated 2013-2014 budget of $2.1 billion, over $2 billion is directed at providing assistance to Canadians in housing need while the balance supports "housing market analysis work and policy, research, and information transfer activities." By 2010 CMHC had an annual financial surplus of more than $2 billion. CMHC is the largest Crown Corporation in terms of assets with some $26 billion in holdings as of 2008-2009. and the second largest after Canada Post in terms of revenue with some $4.6 billion in 2004.

Series 1: Episode 1 – October, 2016 Interview with CMHC’s CEO, Evan Siddall On October 11th, CHRA Executive Director Jeff Morrison had the opportunity to record an interview with the President and CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Evan Siddall. The conversation touched on a number of questions and topics – many of which were suggested by CHRA members in the lead-up to the recording of the interview. CHRA looks forward to continuing its strong relationship with CMHC as we work together towards a National Housing Strategy that addresses the needs and challenges of social and affordable housing providers across Canada.
Statistics recently made available by the National Low Income Housing Coalition illuminate a distressing situation in the Commonwealth: they rank Massachusetts as having the 6th highest housing wage--requiring that those working a 40 hour week earn just over $27 per hour to afford a two-bedroom rental, or 100 hours a week working at the federal minimum wage. And the picture across the country is not much more encouraging: in only 12 counties across the 50 states can a full-time worker earning the prevailing federal or state minimum wage afford a one-bedroom rental. Joining host Peter Bermudes to discuss this housing landscape is Pamela Hallett, a housing advocate with 30 years of affordable housing and community development experience, including the past five as executive director of the ...
