Eastside 101: Odd Fellows Cemetery

Many years ago, blogs used to be the way people discussed things online, kinda like the way social media does now. But it was a bit more subject oriented, based on some writing someone wrote plus the comments. That scene is dead now. Facebook and the like have taken over.

Being one of the few LA based non-white “bloggers” (barf) back in the day, I got invited to join the Metblogs/blogging.la website in its heyday. It was mostly fun, but I was also using it to fight the Silver Lake-is-not-the-Eastside-fight, and to document the world I knew existed and was relevant and interesting on this side of the river. At some point after I left the site, some changes happened and my posts got all garbled and the picture essays I put much effort into lost all their image links. That’s just what happens when you put your “content” on someone else’s page. For example, all my fine content and excellent comments on Facebook have been frozen cuz some jerk face on the DTLA page reported me for some sad reason and now Facebook wants too much info about me.

As if!

So now that I am saving time from being on Facebook, I can finally go about to fixing these old posts that nobody wants to read but that I don’t mind preserving. I started with this one because I looked up my old post when I checked out the Rafael Adames Commemoration some time ago and realized all my shitty photos had disappeared and made my shitty post totes shit. Even I have some standards. I plan to bring back most of my Eastside 101 posts to an acceptable level of shitty, feel free to skip these if you’ve seen them before. If you haven’t, why not waste some time at work?

Old stuff ahead. You’ve been warned.

One of the most prominent characteristics of the Eastside has to be the abundance of cemeteries, you can’t keel over without plopping down on another muertito! That might be a slight exaggeration, but that’s kinda how it feels when you get to know this part of town, you always seem to run into a graveyard. I was hoping to do one massive post, cover some of the different cemeteries with a few pics of each along with a bit of info, but I ruled that out since there were a bunch of snapshots I took on my first trip to Odd Fellows that I wanted to share. This resting ground also holds a special place in my heart but not because I know any of the corpses there, more on that in a bit.

You all like pictures, right? Well I hope you do, otherwise feel free to not click ahead.

Is Jessica’s Closed?

jessicas_closed

It’s kinda hard to tell since it has seemed half-closed, half-open-for-business for years. But maybe it is down for the count, according to this latest of only four Yelp reviews.  Let us look back at the one time I ate their Tortitas de Camaron, over a decade ago. Ahh, such mediocre memories! QEPD.

I’m going to watch this place and see what happens. Will it turn into a displacing outlet that caters to the recreational needs of the small but monied ranks of newly arrived westsiders? Or will it hold the line on LH gentrification and offer us some boring but practical resource for everyone in the neighborhood? Realtors keep trying to sell LH as “up and coming” but the reality on the ground seems to repeatedly prove them wrong. Let us all cast a spell and repeat the chant: “Lincoln Heights Shall Remain the Finest 99 cent district in our City! Investors and Speculators Will Lose All Their Money, Except for their Last 99 cents!” I saw this tagged on a wall at the Bi-Rite a few months ago, so Ima run with it.

popusas

BTW, If you want “popusas” the fancy Glass place they renovated a few years ago across the street near the five points, the one that is now some sort of evangelical church, hosts a sidewalk stand where they sell food items on weekends. Yer Welcome.

Huevos Rancheros: El Huero

hrs_hueros1

I was sure this was going to be a good spot for Huevos Rancheros, I don’t know why but I just had a feeling. The online reviews were mostly positive, it catered to working people that just want a quick and tasty affordable meal, and it’s in an area with lots of Mexicans. And they even have a lil’ vegetarian options menu, a nice touch. My HR-dar must be broken because sadly, the HR’s were terrible.

Huevos Rancheros: Four Daughters Kitchen

hrs_4dk1

I don’t intentionally visit the ethnic eateries of People of Pallor to review their Huevos Rancheros. At least not lately. I’ve come to accept that there’s just a different palate for all us humans, based on factors such as history, geography, economics, culture, aspirations, convenience, yelp, brunch, lemmings, hunger, and plain ol’ stupidity. No point in going out of my way for a dish I’m likely not to enjoy. None of that is relevant for this review as the candidate for today’s HR’s just kinda happened.

Goodwill Store Reopens

goodwillopen1

When they opened up the huge new thrift store on Fletcher and San Fernando, the Goodwill people decided to close down their store in Lincoln Heights even though they have headquarters here. The new place at the old K-Mart is terrible and the layout is poorly designed. The cafeteria they heavily promoted has already closed. I wonder if decreased sales has motivated them to reopen their once popular location in the heart of LH’s Thrift Store district?

Huevos Rancheros: Boulder Edition

hrs_leaf1

My plans for Colorado were craft beer, vegetarian biscuits and gravy, maybe some huevos rancheros IF I found a Mexican place I wanted to try. (I’m on vacation, I don’t need the stress.) We came to Leaf for the biscuits but as luck would have it, that’s only a weekend brunch option. Ugh. Stupid brunch is ruining eating.
