The Turkish government claimed Saturday that the overnight coup attempt by members of the military had failed, though the situation on the ground still remains unclear.

Here are the main developments so far:

  • Factions of the armed forces attempted to seize power Friday night, resulting in gunfire and explosions in Ankara and Istanbul.
  • Turkey’s state news agency Anadolu reported that 90 people had been killed, and 1,1054 wounded in the attempted coup.
  • Early Saturday, the acting chief of staff of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the coup attempt had been prevented.
  • A Turkish official also said on Saturday morning that 1,563 military personnel had been ‘detained’ across the country as a result of the coup.
  • Soldiers took control of the main TRT state television station late Friday night. The presenter read out an announcement stating that the military had taken control and that a curfew and martial law had been imposed.
  • Witnesses reported that tanks surrounding the parliament building opened fire on Friday night, while a Turkish military commander said fighter jets had shot down a helicopter used by the coup plotters in the capital.
  • Istanbul's Ataturk airport was closed but flights had resumed by Saturday morning.
  • Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim blamed the coup on loyalists of US-based cleric and opposition figure Fethullah Gulen. His movement denied involvement.
  • International leaders, including those in the US and EU, voiced their support for Turkey’s government.
