O'Donnell dynasty
The O'Donnell dynasty (Irish: Ó Dónaill or Ó Domhnaill; derived from the Irish name Domhnall, which means "ruler of the world", Dónall in modern Irish) were an ancient and powerful Irish family, kings, princes and lords of Tyrconnell (Tír Chonaill in Irish, now County Donegal) in early times, and the chief allies and sometimes rivals of the O'Neills in Ulster.
Origins
Like the family of O'Neill, that of O'Donnell of Tyrconnell was of the Uí Néill, i.e. descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, High King of Ireland at the beginning of the 5th century; the O'Neill, or Cenél nEógain, tracing their pedigree to Eógan mac Néill, and the O'Donnells, or Cenél Conaill, to Conall Gulban, both sons of Niall. Conall was baptised by St. Patrick.

O'Donnell, Texas
O'Donnell is a West Texas city that lies primarily in Lynn County, with a small portion extending south into Dawson County, Texas. The population was 831 at the 2010 census, down from 1,011 at the 2000 census.
History
O'Donnell was first settled in 1910 and named for Tom J. O'Donnell, a railroad promoter. O'Donnell was a railroad-created town, founded in anticipation that the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway would lay tracks through the area. A branch of the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway was constructed from Slaton to Lamesa in 1910. The rails were abandoned and completely removed in 1999.
Geography
O'Donnell is located on the high plains of the Llano Estacado at 32°57′49″N 101°49′58″W / 32.96361°N 101.83278°W / 32.96361; -101.83278 (32.9637085 -101.8326542).U.S. Highway 87 passes just northwest of the city limits, leading southwest 17 miles (27 km) to Lamesa and north 45 miles (72 km) to Lubbock.
According to the United States Census Bureau, O'Donnell has a total area of 0.85 square miles (2.2 km2), all of it land.

The last Irish King of Ireland Brian 'The Red' O'Neil
Brian Ua Néill, also known as Brian O'Neill, was the High King of Ireland from 1238 to 1260.He came to power with the help of Malachy O’Donnell who helped defeat his kinsmen from the tribe of Ui’Neill Donal McLaughlin for control of the ancient territory of Tyrone. This was an ongoing battle between the two where one would dislodge the other; this pattern continued over some years until Brian finally overcame Donal and his supporters in 1241 at the battle of Caimerge. The battle site is probably just outside of the town of present day Maghera at the townland of Caimerge. It is from this point that Brian is known as the King of Tir Eoghain. Donegal Castle, Ireland, home of the most powerful Gaelic families in the country.
This video brings us to County Donegal and Donegal town to visit Donegal Castle. It’s situated on the river Eske close to where it opens into Donegal Bay and this was the stronghold of the O’Donnell clan. They were one of Ireland’s most powerful Gaelic families between the 5th and 16th Centuries. The castle was built by Red Hugh O’Donnell in 1474 and it was referred to by the English in 1566 as one of the finest Gaelic castles in Ireland. In 1244 King Henry III King of England wrote the following letter Brian when he was about to march against the Scots and their King.
“The King to Brian O’Neil, King of Kinelun, health whereas the King of Scotland has provoked us by injuries, and that we have prepared to rise against him in revenge for his many transgressions, unless he makes reparation, confiding in your love that you will not deny us your help, in this our expedition; we request you to come along with our justicary of Ireland ,and other liege men of Ireland, who are soon to come to parts of Scotland to distress our enemies there; and that you would be pleased to give us such and so powerful a succour, appearing persoanlly at the head of your brave forces, that you may in any distress apply to us for succour with full confidence. And by granting this our prayer whatever favor you ask, we most willingly shall acknowledge ourselves bound to grant with special act thanksgiving. Witness the King, at Stanford, 7th day of July

The castle was partially restored in the 1990’s although it had lay in ruins for the 200 years prior to that. It’s thought that this castle stands on the site of an earlier Viking settlement destroyed in 1159 since Dún na nGall (the Irish for Donegal) translates as Fort of the Foreigner.

In the final piece of my series on the decline of Gaelic Ireland, we follow the story of the O'Neills, a famous and prestigious Gaelic family that some of you are no doubt familiar with. The O'Neills were pivotal in the events that led to one of the most destructive conflicts Ireland has ever seen, the Nine Years War.
Over the course of this video I will lay the out the groundwork that caused the Nine Years War to happen, and follow its course all the way to its conclusion following the battle of Kinsale.

In this video, we delve into the complex and fascinating world of ancient Ireland, where the concept of a unified nation was unheard of. Instead, the island was divided into many clan-based groups, each exercising limited power and sovereignty over their familial domains.
Sluaghghairm - The Battle Cry
Each of these family based factions had their own sluaghghairm, or ‘battle-cry’, associated to their family line or tribe, usually derived by the followers of great families or chieftains to act as a hue and cry, a rallying call to all able-bodied kinsmen, a cry of war from which its hearers drew an almost supernatural ancestral strength and courage to fight on.
One of the defining features of this society was the importance placed on family and lineage. Each family group and collection of families occupying a territory were seen as their own sovereign and independent nation, with their own clan leaders and battle cries.
These battle cries, known as sluagh-ghairm, were used to rally kinsmen to battle and were a defining feature of Irish society at the time. From the famous "Red Hand to Victory" of the O'Neills, to the "Strong Hand to Victory" of the O'Briens, each family had its own unique cry, steeped in history and tradition.

Brian Ua Néill, also known as Brian O'Neill, was the High King of Ireland from 1238 to 1260.He came to power with the help of Malachy O’Donnell who helped defeat his kinsmen from the tribe of Ui’Neill Donal McLaughlin for control of the ancient territory of Tyrone. This was an ongoing battle between the two where one would dislodge the other; this pattern continued over some years until Brian finally overcame Donal and his supporters in 1241 at the battle of Caimerge.
The battle site is probably just outside of the town of present day Maghera at the townland of Caimerge. It is from this point that Brian is known as the King of Tir Eoghain. Another major factor in Brian’s development as the O’Neill came from Hugh de Lacy's death in 1243 which meant that the Earldom of Ulster was still in a period of lax administration and Brian wasn’t one to miss an opportunity.
In 1244 King Henry III King of England wrote the following letter Brian when he was about to march against the Scots and their King.
“The King to Brian O’Neil, King of Kinelun, health whereas the King of Scotland has provoked us by injuries, and that we have prepared to rise against him in revenge for his many transgressions, unless he makes reparation, confiding in your love that you will not deny us your help, in this our expedition; we request you to come along with our justicary of Ireland ,and other liege men of Ireland, who are soon to come to parts of Scotland to distress our enemies there; and that you would be pleased to give us such and so powerful a succour, appearing persoanlly at the head of your brave forces, that you may in any distress apply to us for succour with full confidence. And by granting this our prayer whatever favor you ask, we most willingly shall acknowledge ourselves bound to grant with special act thanksgiving. Witness the King, at Stanford, 7th day of July

An Lámh Dhearg, the red hand of Ulster, is a famous symbol of Northern Ireland. And it’d be hard to find a more dramatic object to put on a flag.
But the roots of the Hand are tied to a mysterious origin story that may go back as far as pagan times in Ireland.
The icon itself is quite literally a red hand, palm facing the viewer, fingers pointed upwards. Usually it is a right hand, but in some variations a left hand is used.
As a documented heraldic emblem, the red hand first appears in the 13th century. However, historians don't really know the exact origin or reasoning for how the symbol of the hand came to be. In this video, Erik recounts the history and the exciting legend of how the Red Hand of Ulster came to be.

This video brings us to County Donegal and Donegal town to visit Donegal Castle. It’s situated on the river Eske close to where it opens into Donegal Bay and this was the stronghold of the O’Donnell clan.
They were one of Ireland’s most powerful Gaelic families between the 5th and 16th Centuries. The castle was built by Red Hugh O’Donnell in 1474 and it was referred to by the English in 1566 as one of the finest Gaelic castles in Ireland. The boundary wall was a later edition to the castle although it dates from the 17th Century.
Alas, the leaders of the O’Donnell clan left Ireland in 1607 in what’s known as the Flight of the Earls. This meant that the castle fell into English hands in 1611 during the Plantation of Ulster and the new owner, a Capt. Basil Brooke, repaired previous damage that the departing O’Donnell’s had inflicted on the building to prevent it being used against the Gaelic clans. He also added the large manor-house wing, which was built in Jacobean style.
The castle was partially restored in the 1990’s although it had lay in ruins for the 200 years prior to that. It’s thought that this castle stands on the site of an earlier Viking settlement destroyed in 1159 since Dún na nGall (the Irish for Donegal) translates as Fort of the Foreigner.

O'Donnell dynasty
The O'Donnell dynasty (Irish: Ó Dónaill or Ó Domhnaill; derived from the Irish name Domhnall, which means "ruler of the world", Dónall in modern Irish) were an ancient and powerful Irish family, kings, princes and lords of Tyrconnell (Tír Chonaill in Irish, now County Donegal) in early times, and the chief allies and sometimes rivals of the O'Neills in Ulster.
Origins
Like the family of O'Neill, that of O'Donnell of Tyrconnell was of the Uí Néill, i.e. descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, High King of Ireland at the beginning of the 5th century; the O'Neill, or Cenél nEógain, tracing their pedigree to Eógan mac Néill, and the O'Donnells, or Cenél Conaill, to Conall Gulban, both sons of Niall. Conall was baptised by St. Patrick.
