The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, usually abbreviated as NAACP, is an African-American civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909. Its mission is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination". Its name, retained in accordance with tradition, uses the once common term colored people.

The NAACP bestows the annual Image Awards for achievement in the arts and entertainment, and the annual Spingarn Medals for outstanding positive achievement of any kind, on deserving African Americans. It has its headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.

The NAACP's headquarters are in Baltimore, Maryland, with additional regional offices in California, New York, Michigan, Colorado, Georgia, Texas and Maryland. Each regional office is responsible for coordinating the efforts of state conferences in the states included in that region. Local, youth, and college chapters organize activities for individual members.

Malcolm X (play /ˈmælkəm ˈɛks/; May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965), born Malcolm Little and also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Arabic: الحاجّ مالك الشباز‎), was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. To his admirers, he was a courageous advocate for the rights of African Americans, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans. Detractors accused him of preaching racism, black supremacy, antisemitism, and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history.

Malcolm X's father died—killed by white supremacists, it was rumored—when he was young, and at least one of his uncles was lynched. When he was thirteen, his mother was placed in a mental hospital, and he was placed in a series of foster homes. In 1946, at age 20, he went to prison for breaking and entering.

In prison, Malcolm X became a member of the Nation of Islam and after his parole in 1952 he quickly rose to become one of its leaders. For a dozen years Malcolm X was the public face of the controversial group, but disillusionment with Nation of Islam head Elijah Muhammad led him to leave the Nation in March 1964. After a period of travel in Africa and the Middle East, he returned to the United States, where he founded Muslim Mosque, Inc. and the Organization of Afro-American Unity. In February 1965, less than a year after leaving the Nation of Islam, he was assassinated by three members of the group.

But you'll find he gets support at all levels. McCuen: How many Muslims do you say there are in numbers? Malcolm X: I couldn't say. I've never heard him say and he's the only one who would know. McCuen: 500,000? Malcolm X: I couldn't say. I think that anyone who does say is not in a position to know and anyone who knows, wouldn't say. McCuen: What do you think that the Urban League and the NAACP have accomplished for your people. What's your attitude towards them? Malcolm X: Well, in their own way, they have been doing their best to bring about freedom, justice and equality and human dignity for the black people in this country. But today you have such an intense degree of dissatisfaction and impatience existing among our people at the mass level that it is almost impossible to come to them with a program that's going to take another hundred years to solve their problem and they still be satisfied to wait. So the Urban League and the NAACP has done a good job within their understanding, but today, it takes more immediate solutions and the solution that the honorable Elijah Muhammad has is immediate. It's more practical. http://malcolmxfiles.blogspot.com/

Colored is a term used in the United States to refer to black people (i.e., persons of sub-Saharan African ancestry; members of the black race). Since the success of the African-American Civil rights movement, the term, along with "negro" and others, has been largely replaced by "black." According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word colored was first used in the 14th Century. In other English-speaking countries, the term has varied meanings. In South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the term Coloured refers both to a specific ethnic group of complex mixed origins, which is considered neither black nor white, and in other contexts to people of mixed race; in neither context is its usage considered derogatory. In British usage, the term refers to "a person who is wholly or partly of non-white descent" and its use may be regarded as antiquated or offensive, and other terms are preferable, particularly when referring to a single ethnicity. The term should not be confused with the term people of color, which generally refers to all non-white people. The term colored appeared in North America during the colonial era. In 1851 an article in the New York Times referred to the "colored population". In 1863, the War Department established the Bureau of Colored Troops. The first 12 Census counts in the U.S. enumerated '"colored" people, who totaled nine million in 1900. The Census counts of 1910--1960 enumerated "negroes." "It's no disgrace to be colored," the black entertainer Bert Williams famously observed early in the century, "but it is awfully inconvenient." "Colored people lived in three neighborhoods that were clearly demarcated, as if by ropes or turnstiles," writes Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. about growing up in segregated West Virginia in the 1960s. "Welcome to the Colored Zone, a large stretched banner could have said... Of course, the colored world was not so much a neighborhood as a condition of existence." "For most of my childhood, we couldn't eat in restaurants or sleep in hotels, we couldn't use certain bathrooms or try on clothes in stores," recalls Gates. His mother retaliated by not buying clothes she was not allowed to try on. He remembered hearing a white man deliberately calling his father by the wrong name. "'He knows my name, boy,' my father said after a long pause. 'He calls all colored people George.'" When Gates' female cousin became the first black cheerleader at the local high school, she was not allowed to sit with the team in a Naugahyde booth and drink Coke from a glass, but had to stand at the counter drinking from a paper cup. Professor Gates also wrote about his experiences in his 1995 book, Colored People: A Memoir. In the 21st century, colored is generally not regarded as a politically correct term. It lives on in the association name National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, generally called just NAACP, without actually enunciating the word for which each letter stands. In 2008 Carla Sims, communications director for the NAACP in Washington DC, said "the term 'colored' is not derogatory, [the NAACP] chose the word 'colored' because it was the most positive description commonly used [in 1909, when the association was founded]. It's outdated and antiquated but not offensive." To date, there has not been a movement to change the name of the organization to a more politically correct term such as the "National Association for the Advancement of African-Americans." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colored Henry Louis "Skip" Gates, Jr., (born September 16, 1950) is an American literary critic, educator, scholar, writer, and editor. He was the first African American to receive the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship. He has received numerous honorary degrees and awards for his teaching, research, and development of academic institutions to study black culture. In 2002, Gates was selected to give the Jefferson Lecture, in recognition of his "distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities." Gates has hosted several PBS television miniseries, including the history and travel program Wonders of the African World and the biographical African American Lives and Faces of America. Gates sits on the boards of many notable arts, cultural, and research institutions. He serves as the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University, where he is director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research. Gates hosted Faces of America, a four-part series presented by PBS in 2010. This program examined the genealogy of 12 North Americans of diverse ancestry: Elizabeth Alexander, Mario Batali, Stephen Colbert, Louise Erdrich, Malcolm Gladwell, Eva Longoria, Yo-Yo Ma, Mike Nichols, Queen Noor, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Meryl Streep, and Kristi Yamaguchi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Louis_Gates Image By Jon Irons [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Interview with Robert F. Williams (Feb. 26, 1925-Oct. 15, 1996), president of the Union County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Monroe, N. C., 1959. Williams, a former Marine, was the first modern African American leader to both call for and practice armed self-defense against white racist attacks, intimidation and threats. His articulation of this right anticipated by five years the more famous call made by his friend Malcolm X after the latter broke with Elijah Muhammad's conservative Nation of Islam (NOI) on March 8, 1964. "Negroes With Guns" (New York: Marzani and Munsell, 1962; reprinted Detroit: Wayne State UP, 1998), a small book based on interviews with Williams; "The Crusader," a militant newsletter edited by Williams at Monroe and, after he was forced into exile in 1961, Cuba and the People's Republic of China; and Williams's "Radio Free Dixie" radio broadcast from revolutionary Cuba all exerted a powerful challenge to the tactic and philosophy of nonviolent direct resistance that dominated the civil-rights movement. Williams served as one of the chief models for the self-defense posture of the Lowndes County Freedom Organization (LFCO) of Alabama, better known as the original Black Panther party, which was formed in early 1965 with the assistance of members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), including Stokely Carmichael (later Kwame Ture), to mobilize independent black political power against the exclusion, marginalization and exploitation by the racist local Democratic party. The LCFO, in turn, inspired the formation of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP), formed in October 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby G. Seale at Oakland, Calif., which borrowed from Williams's example and Malcolm X's rhetoric on self-defense. The interview with Williams is excerpted from "Integration: Report I," directed by Madeline Anderson (Andover Productions, 1960), which profiled the modern civil-rights movement from 1957-60, including sit-ins, marches, boycotts and rallies at Montgomery, Ala., Brooklyn, N. Y., and Washington, D. C. The woman sitting next to Williams in his wife, Mabel, and the bespectacled man is veteran civil-rights attorney Conrad J. Lynn, Williams's lawyer. The narrator is playwright and author Loften Mitchell. One of the singers is Maya Angelou, then a Calypso singer and dancer, who would later become an accomplished poet, an award-winning writer, journalist, activist, actor, director and a teacher. Julian Bond, Reflections on Georgia Politics

ROGP 133. Julian Bond interviewed by Bob Short, February 27, 2012. Julian Bond was a civil rights activist who held leadership roles in several organizations, including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He helped organize civil rights activities such as sit-ins, protests, and voter registration drives across Georgia. He also held public office as a member of the Georgia House, and, later, senate. In this interview, Bond discusses his early years, his education at Morehouse College, and his involvement in the civil rights movement, including his activities with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He talks about the racial and political climate in Atlanta in the 1960s. Bond also describes his experience in the political arena as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives and, later, the Georgia senate. From the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies. For more information, see: http://russelldoc.galib.uga.edu/russell/view?docId=ead/RBRL220ROGP.133-ead.xml

Your Best Friend (how Do I)

    No no,
    Nooo no
    Where should I start?
I don't wanna break her heart.
The phone rings and it's you
You beg me to come home
And the truth is girl you think, I'm in the studio
For a moment I was there
And then I ended up here
Now I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place,
What is this I'm gonna face,
    If she ever finds out
    (Should I just go)
And do what my heart tells me to
    (But I cannot let go)
You don't know what I'm goin through
    (How did I get)...
Caught up in this sticky situation that I'm facing.
How do I? Say to my girl that I've been cheating.
How can I? Try to explain the late night creeping.
How do I? Tell her the truth and it not end.
How do I? Say I've been cheating with your best friend.
    Your best friend, best friend.
I've been cheating with your best friend,
Your best friend, best friend, No no no no
Babygirl it's been tearing me apart,
And it really hurts my heart that I gotta be telling you this.
Even tho I know it's gonna be the end
I couldn't hold it any longer and keep lying to myself
I never wanted to see you cry
You think I'm messed up I know why
Maybe it's my past coming to haunt me
But I'm just doin exactly what she taught me.
    (Should I just go)
And do what my heart tells me to
    (But I cannot let go)
You don't know what I'm goin through
    (How did I get)...
Caught up in this sticky situation that I'm facing.
How do I? Say to my girl that I've been cheating.
How can I? Try to explain the late night creeping.
How do I? Tell her the truth and it not end.
How do I? Say I've been cheating with your best friend.
Your best friend, your best friend.
I've been cheating with your best friend,
Your best friend, your best friend,

We should not be that surprised at the vote in favour of Brexit.
