The Salzburg Festival (German: Salzburger Festspiele) is a prominent festival of music and drama established in 1920. It is held each summer (for five weeks starting in late July) within the Austrian town of Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. One highlight is the annual performance of the Everyman (Jedermann) dramatization by Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
Since 1967, an annual Salzburg Easter Festival has also been held, organized by a separate organization.
Music festivals had been held in Salzburg at irregular intervals since 1877 held by the International Mozarteum Foundation, but were discontinued in 1910. Although a festival was planned for 1914, it was cancelled at the outbreak of World War I. In 1917, Friedrich Gehmacher and Heinrich Damisch formed an organization known as the Salzburger Festspielhaus-Gemeinde to establish an annual festival of drama and music, emphasizing especially the works of Mozart. At the close of the war in 1918, the festival's revival was championed by five men now regarded as its founders: the poet and dramatist Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the composer Richard Strauss, the scenic designer Alfred Roller, the conductor Franz Schalk, and the director Max Reinhardt, then intendant of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, who had produced the first performance of Hofmannsthal's Jedermann at the Berlin Zirkus Schumann arena in 1911.
Salzburg (German pronunciation: [ˈzaltsbʊɐ̯k];Bavarian: Såizburg; literally: "Salt Fortress") is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg.
Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) is internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city has three universities and a large population of students. Tourists also frequent the city to tour the city's historic center and the scenic Alpine surroundings.
Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the mid‑20th century, the city was the setting for the musical play and film The Sound of Music.
Traces of human settlements have been found in the area, dating to the Neolithic Age. The first settlements in Salzburg continuous with the present were apparently by the Celts around the 5th century BC.
Around 15 BC the separate settlements were merged into one city by the Roman Empire. At this time, the city was called "Juvavum" and was awarded the status of a Roman municipium in 45 AD. Juvavum developed into an important town of the Roman province of Noricum. After the collapse of the Norican frontier, Juvavum declined so sharply that by the late 7th century it nearly became a ruin.
1972 (MCMLXXII) was a leap year starting on Saturday (dominical letter BA) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1972nd year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 972nd year of the 2nd millennium, the 72nd year of the 20th century, and the 3rd year of the 1970s decade.
Within the context of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) it was the longest year ever, as two leap seconds were added during this 366-day year, an event which has not since been repeated. (If its start and end are defined using mean solar time [the legal time scale], its duration was 31622401.141 seconds of Terrestrial Time (or Ephemeris Time), which is slightly shorter than 1908).
A festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centering on some characteristic aspect of that community and its religion or traditions, often marked as a local or national holiday, mela or eid. Next to religion and folklore, a significant origin is agricultural. Food is such a vital resource that many festivals are associated with harvest time. Religious commemoration and thanksgiving for good harvests are blended in events that take place in autumn, such as Halloween in the northern hemisphere and Easter in the southern.
Festivals often serve to fulfill specific communal purposes, especially in regard to commemoration or thanksgiving. The celebrations offer a sense of belonging for religious, social, or geographical groups, contributing to group cohesiveness. They may also provide entertainment, which was particularly important to local communities before the advent of mass-produced entertainment. Festivals that focus on cultural or ethnic topics also seek to inform community members of their traditions; the involvement of elders sharing stories and experience provides a means for unity among families.
The violin is a string instrument in the violin family. It is the smallest and highest-pitched instrument in the family in regular use. The violin typically has four strings tuned in perfect fifths, and is most commonly played by drawing a bow across its strings. Violins are important instruments a wide variety of musical genres. They are most prominent in the Western classical tradition and in many varieties of folk music (where the violin is often known as the "fiddle"). However, violins are also frequently used in jazz, a number of different forms of rock and roll and metal, and descendants of folk including country music and bluegrass music. Further, the violin has come to be played in many non-Western music cultures all over the world. The violin is sometimes informally called a fiddle, regardless of the type of music played on it.
The violin was first known in 16th-century Italy, with some further modifications occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Europe it served as the basis for stringed instruments used in western classical music, the viola and the violin. Violinists and collectors particularly prize the instruments made by the Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati families from the 16th to the 18th century in Brescia and Cremona and by Jacob Stainer in Austria. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has defied attempts to explain or equal it, though this belief is disputed. Great numbers of instruments have come from the hands of "lesser" makers, as well as still greater numbers of mass-produced commercial "trade violins" coming from cottage industries in places such as Saxony, Bohemia, and Mirecourt. Many of these trade instruments were formerly sold by Sears, Roebuck and Co. and other mass merchandisers.

Few days ago Cities in 4K visited Salzburg, the fourth-largest city in Austria. It is located on the river Salzach and is a beautiful city, especially during winter holidays when covered with snow, which wasn´t the case this year, unfortunately. But you can find a lot of stock footage about Salzburg during winter. The old part or Altstadt of Salzburg is known for its baroque architecture. And in this part of the city is the birth house of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart located. There are many other interesting and historical meaningful buildings in this city which has to be explored. Some of the buildings and places you can find in the video are: Residenzplatz, Salzburg Kathedrale, Kapunzinerberg, Aussicht vom Kapunzinerkloster, Mönchsberg, Alter Markt, Mirabell Schloss und Gärten, Hohensal...

http://tourvideos.com/ We're going to have some fun in Salzburg wandering up and down the little alleyways these are side lanes that go off from the main pedestrian lane. They are kind of like shopping malls nowadays but originally, hundreds of years ago, they were a little path that connected the front houses with the back houses. Salzburg has lots of these pedestrian lanes right in the heart of town and yet it would be easy to overlook them – in fact most visitors to Salzburg don't even notice them. But in this movie that's all we're going to do, is take you up and down, in and out through these little side lanes, and then back over to Getreidegasse which is the main pedestrian lane that runs through the heart of Salzburg. There are more than a dozen of these little alleys that extend ...

David Bowie - Suffragette City – Live at the Imperial College of London – 1972 - Speed Corrected Suffragette City is originally a song from David Bowie’s album, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars", recorded in late ’71, and released in June ‘72. This early live and raw, proto-punk version of Suffragette City was recorded at The Imperial College of London, on the 12th of February 1972. That was 45 years ago today. It was only the third gig by the Ziggy & the Spiders, only the third time they had played this song live, presumably. According to this nice feature on the official Bowie site, the Imperial College gig is considered the first proper Ziggy & the Spiders gig. http://www.davidbowie.com/news/ziggy-imperial-college-day-1972-54146 Performed here just th...
