Today I'll share what I've learned over 10 years of first being a developer working directly for software companies, and then 10 years working as a software consultant. I hope this helps anyone evaluating the trade offs of a software developer vs consultant, and figuring out what's better for your career.
The first consideration is influence. As an employee, your influence can sometimes be restricted by the position you hold. As a consultant, it tends to lend itself to you having whatever influence is necessary to solve the problem you were brought in for - at least at first.
Another thing to consider is how the business will perceive your value. As an employee, you can be looked at as a cost center, or a profit center depending on the business model of the company. As a consultant, your value to the business is typically a solution provider - you're there to solve a problem, and ultimately to leave.
How will you be perceived by peers? As an employee, you should be treated as one of the family since you share the same benefits and struggles as the rest of the company's people. As a consultant, peers will often look at you very skeptically at first - you must learn to be comfortable with this to fit into their culture.
What are some of the key traits and skills needed? As an employee the focus is often on your technical skills. Though soft skills and process understanding will help, most hiring managers focus heavily on technology above all else. Additionally, you'll be considered for "culture fit" - which can be a real thing, or a wild card used to reject candidates in my experience.
As a consultant, there are very different skills that will tend to help you be successful in the position. First, likeability - people must like you to enable you to get the influence necessary to become a trusted advisor. You also need to be above average at communicating clearly, and tailoring information to different audiences. Lastly, an appreciation for and desire to understand the business in which the software development is done will help tremendously.
Next think about rewards. As an employee, you're usually going to make some adjusted version of the market rate for your skills, and optionally some options or equity. As a consultant, you're either billing your clients at an hourly rate, or can charge a percentage of the opportunity you're enabling.
As an employee growth will happen when the company needs it. So you need to grow on the side if things aren't moving as fast as you'd like. A consultant has the potential to grow with each contract, but it can be stressful and fast paced.
An employee can get recognition whenever they work on a successful product effort. A consultant gets less recognition that turns into a reward short term, since they depend on their firm rewarding them and they don't always directly see the work.
Employees can change whatever work processes they want within the realm of their responsibility with reasonable ease. Consultants must prove themselves before they are allowed to change processes, but once proven it can be easier than an employee.

The Consultant
"The Consultant" is the 17th episode in the third season of the television series M*A*S*H. It originally aired on January 17, 1975. It was written by Robert Klane, from a story by Larry Gelbart, and was directed by Gene Reynolds.
Plot overview
Hawkeye and Trapper are off to surgical clinic in Japan, but instead of attending seminars and meetings, they intend to spend their time golfing and picking up geisha girls.
Once arriving in Japan, the two cohorts sit at a bar and chum up to a civilian medical consultant, Anthony Borelli (played by Robert Alda). They exchange stories, as Borelli is in Tokyo attending the same conference and has himself served as surgical doctor in both world wars. Trapper and Hawkeye invite Borelli to leave the "cozy locker room in Tokyo" and get some real game in a M*A*S*H unit or aid station. He politely declines and the three part ways.
Back at the camp, Henry is enjoying a soak in a makeshift wading pool that has apparently been engineered by Radar. Frank saunters up and complains loudly that Hawkeye and Trapper did not attend a single lecture at the clinic. Henry avoids Frank by sinking under the water. Marvel One-Shots
Marvel One-Shots are a series of direct-to-video short films produced by Marvel Studios, set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), released from 2011 to 2014. They are included as special features in the MCU films' Blu-ray and digital distribution releases, but are not included in the DVD releases. Each of the films, which range from 4 to 14 minutes, are designed to be a self-contained story that provides more backstory for characters or events introduced in the films. Two of the shorts have been the inspiration for television series set in the MCU.
The Consultant (2011) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer (2011) star Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, and offer up self-contained stories about a day in the life of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Item 47 (2012) stars Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford as a down-on-their-luck couple who find a discarded Chitauri gun after the events of Marvel's The Avengers. Agent Carter (2013) stars Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, while All Hail the King (2014) stars Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery after the events of Iron Man 3.

The Consultant (Fringe)
"The Consultant" is the eighteenth episode of the fourth season of the Fox science-fiction drama television series Fringe, and the series' 83rd episode overall.
It was written by Christine Lavaf, while Jeannot Szwarc served as director.
Plot
Three people in the prime universe are killed simultaneously when they are thrown into the air and into the ground by a mysterious force. In examining the bodies, the Fringe team discovers marks on the bodies consistent with seat belts. When they consult with the parallel universe's Fringe division, they learn that the doppelgangers of the three victims had died in a plane crash at the same time as the deaths in the prime universe.
Walter Bishop (John Noble) suspects that he can learn more about the victims by crossing via the Machine Room bridge to the parallel world, his first trip there (in this timeline) since abducting the young Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) in 1985 and causing the war between the universes. He meets up with Olivia Dunham's (Anna Torv) doppelganger, "Fauxlivia" (Torv), who is still mourning the death of her partner and friend, Captain Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel). Agent Lincoln Lee (Gabel) of the prime universe has stayed with Fauxlivia to help her cope with her loss as well as to examine intelligence gained when they captured the parallel universe's version of Nina Sharp (Blair Brown), known to be cooperating with David Robert Jones (Jared Harris). Later, Walter speaks to Colonel Broyles (Lance Reddick) of the parallel universe's Fringe division, apologizing for the problems that his crossing had caused. When asked by Broyles if he would have done it again being aware of what transpired since, Walter admits that he would knowing that it would bring him his son back.

Today I'll share what I've learned over 10 years of first being a developer working directly for software companies, and then 10 years working as a software consultant. I hope this helps anyone evaluating the trade offs of a software developer vs consultant, and figuring out what's better for your career.
The first consideration is influence. As an employee, your influence can sometimes be restricted by the position you hold. As a consultant, it tends to lend itself to you having whatever influence is necessary to solve the problem you were brought in for - at least at first.
Another thing to consider is how the business will perceive your value. As an employee, you can be looked at as a cost center, or a profit center depending on the business model of the company. As a consultant, your value to the business is typically a solution provider - you're there to solve a problem, and ultimately to leave.
How will you be perceived by peers? As an employee, you should be treated as one of the family since you share the same benefits and struggles as the rest of the company's people. As a consultant, peers will often look at you very skeptically at first - you must learn to be comfortable with this to fit into their culture.
What are some of the key traits and skills needed? As an employee the focus is often on your technical skills. Though soft skills and process understanding will help, most hiring managers focus heavily on technology above all else. Additionally, you'll be considered for "culture fit" - which can be a real thing, or a wild card used to reject candidates in my experience.
As a consultant, there are very different skills that will tend to help you be successful in the position. First, likeability - people must like you to enable you to get the influence necessary to become a trusted advisor. You also need to be above average at communicating clearly, and tailoring information to different audiences. Lastly, an appreciation for and desire to understand the business in which the software development is done will help tremendously.
Next think about rewards. As an employee, you're usually going to make some adjusted version of the market rate for your skills, and optionally some options or equity. As a consultant, you're either billing your clients at an hourly rate, or can charge a percentage of the opportunity you're enabling.
As an employee growth will happen when the company needs it. So you need to grow on the side if things aren't moving as fast as you'd like. A consultant has the potential to grow with each contract, but it can be stressful and fast paced.
An employee can get recognition whenever they work on a successful product effort. A consultant gets less recognition that turns into a reward short term, since they depend on their firm rewarding them and they don't always directly see the work.
Employees can change whatever work processes they want within the realm of their responsibility with reasonable ease. Consultants must prove themselves before they are allowed to change processes, but once proven it can be easier than an employee.

In this video, I will explain in details what a consultant really do. People say that I solve #businessproblems. That’s not wrong. But it’s way over-simplified. What does it mean to “solve problems”? What specifically do #consultants do to do that?
#Managementconsultants help solve business problems, using their own expertise in problem-solving, combined with an extensive support network of industry, function and local experts, as well as other specialists. The daily work of consultants in a project include gathering data and insights, running analyses, making presentations and pitching solutions.

Today I'll share what I've learned over 10 years of first being a developer working directly for software companies, and then 10 years working as a software consultant. I hope this helps anyone evaluating the trade offs of a software developer vs consultant, and figuring out what's better for your career.
The first consideration is influence. As an employee, your influence can sometimes be restricted by the position you hold. As a consultant, it tends to lend itself to you having whatever influence is necessary to solve the problem you were brought in for - at least at first.
Another thing to consider is how the business will perceive your value. As an employee, you can be looked at as a cost center, or a profit center depending on the business model of the company. As a consultant, your value to the business is typically a solution provider - you're there to solve a problem, and ultimately to leave.
How will you be perceived by peers? As an employee, you should be treated as one of the family since you share the same benefits and struggles as the rest of the company's people. As a consultant, peers will often look at you very skeptically at first - you must learn to be comfortable with this to fit into their culture.
What are some of the key traits and skills needed? As an employee the focus is often on your technical skills. Though soft skills and process understanding will help, most hiring managers focus heavily on technology above all else. Additionally, you'll be considered for "culture fit" - which can be a real thing, or a wild card used to reject candidates in my experience.
As a consultant, there are very different skills that will tend to help you be successful in the position. First, likeability - people must like you to enable you to get the influence necessary to become a trusted advisor. You also need to be above average at communicating clearly, and tailoring information to different audiences. Lastly, an appreciation for and desire to understand the business in which the software development is done will help tremendously.
Next think about rewards. As an employee, you're usually going to make some adjusted version of the market rate for your skills, and optionally some options or equity. As a consultant, you're either billing your clients at an hourly rate, or can charge a percentage of the opportunity you're enabling.
As an employee growth will happen when the company needs it. So you need to grow on the side if things aren't moving as fast as you'd like. A consultant has the potential to grow with each contract, but it can be stressful and fast paced.
An employee can get recognition whenever they work on a successful product effort. A consultant gets less recognition that turns into a reward short term, since they depend on their firm rewarding them and they don't always directly see the work.
Employees can change whatever work processes they want within the realm of their responsibility with reasonable ease. Consultants must prove themselves before they are allowed to change processes, but once proven it can be easier than an employee.

The Consultant
"The Consultant" is the 17th episode in the third season of the television series M*A*S*H. It originally aired on January 17, 1975. It was written by Robert Klane, from a story by Larry Gelbart, and was directed by Gene Reynolds.
Plot overview
Hawkeye and Trapper are off to surgical clinic in Japan, but instead of attending seminars and meetings, they intend to spend their time golfing and picking up geisha girls.
Once arriving in Japan, the two cohorts sit at a bar and chum up to a civilian medical consultant, Anthony Borelli (played by Robert Alda). They exchange stories, as Borelli is in Tokyo attending the same conference and has himself served as surgical doctor in both world wars. Trapper and Hawkeye invite Borelli to leave the "cozy locker room in Tokyo" and get some real game in a M*A*S*H unit or aid station. He politely declines and the three part ways.
Back at the camp, Henry is enjoying a soak in a makeshift wading pool that has apparently been engineered by Radar. Frank saunters up and complains loudly that Hawkeye and Trapper did not attend a single lecture at the clinic. Henry avoids Frank by sinking under the water. Then, Trapper and Hawkeye walk out, decked in swimming shorts, flippers and floaties. They jump into the pool, making a big splash.
