Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (/ˈrʌtɡərz/), commonly referred to as Rutgers University, Rutgers, or RU, is an American public research university and the largest institution for higher education in New Jersey.
Originally chartered as Queen's College on November 10, 1766, Rutgers is the eighth-oldest college in the United States and one of the nine "Colonial Colleges" chartered before the American Revolution. The college was renamed Rutgers College in 1825 in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers (1745–1830), a New York City landowner, philanthropist and former military officer, whose $5000 bond donation to the school allowed it to reopen after years of financial difficulty. For most of its existence, Rutgers was a private liberal arts college affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church and admitted only male students. The college expanded its role in research and instruction in agriculture, engineering, and science when it was named as the state's sole land-grant college in 1864 under the Morrill Act of 1862. It gained university status in 1924 with the introduction of graduate education and further expansion. However, Rutgers evolved into a coeducational public research university after being designated "The State University of New Jersey" by the New Jersey Legislature in laws enacted in 1945 and 1956. It is one of only two colonial colleges that later became public universities. Rutgers, however, remains something of a public-private hybrid, in particular retaining certain "private rights" against unilateral changes in its governance, name, and structure that the state might otherwise want to impose.
Sigma Delta (ΣΔ) is a local sorority at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States. First established on the campus in 1972, Sigma Delta, known as "Sigma Delt" by students, was a chapter of the national sorority Sigma Kappa. Dartmouth's Sigma Kappa chapter was the first sorority to be founded on Dartmouth's campus. Women were not permitted to enroll at Dartmouth until 1972 and women only slots were an imperative experience for the newly matriculated women. Sigma Kappa fulfilled the gap well with this new establishment where women could meet anytime in the course of the week.
By the late 1980s Dartmouth's student population had diversified. With this diversification of the student body, the sisterhood of Dartmouth's chapter of Sigma Kappa experienced an influx of women of minorities who wished to have not only a female space, but also a space that would embrace their personal identities as women regardless of age, class, religion, or ethnicity. In 1989, Dartmouth's Sigma Kappa chapter split from the national organization citing that the national rituals were too heavily steeped in Christianity. With this move, Sigma Delta was established as Dartmouth's first local sorority.
Sigma Delta Tau (ΣΔΤ) is a national sorority and is recognized by the National Panhellenic Conference. The original name, Sigma Delta Phi, was changed after the women discovered a sorority with the same name already existed. Today, Sigma Delta Tau has over 60,000 initiates from 100 chapters around the United States. The 100th chapter to be initiated was the Delta Kappa Chapter at Western Connecticut State University on March 25, 2012, the sorority's 95th anniversary.
Sigma Delta Tau was founded by seven Jewish women: Dora Bloom Turteltaub, Amy Apfel Tishman, Marian Gerber Greenberg, Grace Srenco Grossman, Inez Dane Ross, Regene Freund Cohane, Lenore Rubinow. There is no religious requirement for membership to the sorority, nor is it affiliated with any one religion. Sigma Delta Tau accepts women of all walks of life, and is very diverse. The colors of Sigma Delta Tau are cafe au lait and old blue. The sorority's symbol is the Torch, which is also the name of its national publication.
