Dance of the Yi People (simplified: 彝族舞曲; traditional: 彞族舞曲; pinyin: Yízú Wǔqǔ; sometimes also called Dance of the Yi Tribe or Yi Dance) is one of the most popular solo compositions for the pipa, a four-stringed pear-shaped fretted lute used as one of the primary traditional musical instruments of China. Unlike the martial-sounding Ambushed From All Sides (十面埋伏; pinyin: Shí Mìan Maí Fú), the other most widely performed solo pipa piece, Dance of the Yi People is predominantly lyrical in character.
Dance of the Yi People was composed in the 1960s by the Chinese composer Wang Huiran (王惠然; b. 1936), presumably based on traditional music of the Yi people of southern China.
As with many Chinese compositions for traditional instruments, in the late 20th century Dance of the Yi People was also remade into a Chinese popular song entitled "999 Roses" (九百九十九朵玫瑰), sung by Samuel Tai (邰正宵; pinyin: Tái Zhèngxiāo).videos
The Yi or Lolo people are an ethnic group in China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Numbering 8 million, they are the seventh largest of the 55 ethnic minority groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. They live primarily in rural areas of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi, usually in mountainous regions. As of 1999, there were 3,300 "Lô Lô" people living in Hà Giang, Cao Bằng, and Lào Cai provinces in northeastern Vietnam.
The Yi speak various Loloish languages, Sino-Tibetan languages closely related to Burmese. The prestige variety is Nuosu, which is written in the Yi script.
Of the more than 8 million Yi people, over 4.5 million live in Yunnan Province, 2.5 million live in southern Sichuan Province, and 1 million live in the northwest corner of Guizhou Province. Nearly all the Yi live in mountainous areas, often carving out their existence on the sides of steep mountain slopes far from the cities of China.
The altitudinal differences of the Yi areas directly affect the climate and precipitation of these areas. These striking differences are the basis of the old saying that "The weather is different a few miles away" in the Yi area. This is the primary reason why the Yi in various areas are so different from one another in the ways they make a living.

"Dynamic Yunnan" is filled with songs and dances that celebrate the sun, the moon and the region's folk legends. Ms. Yang said part of the show's popularity stems from its authenticity: nearly all the performers are young people from Yunnan's ethnic minorities. And like her, few have had formal training. One young man, she said, was selected after she heard him crying out for his runaway cow. A young girl was chosen after pleading for the opportunity to dance so she could earn the $48 it would cost her family to buy a cow. Ms. Yang said the girl's story moved her to tears. "I picked her even though I thought she was too short," Ms. Yang said, laughing. "But she works hard. I can always hear her singing in the back. She puts all her energy into it. You see, this show is nothing but real...

The clip is the first in a sequence of staged-narrative reperformances of rice-field farming in the terraced fields of the Southwest, a UN-preservation protected swatch of hills where this kind of irrigation is feasible. What we are seeing is a kind of self-enacted "by us, for us, about us" dance/song performance, the plot being a run-through of the annual rice production cycle. The performances started in 2009 as part of an effort to protect local song and dance culture from tourist degradation. There is only one performance a year, and it is not in or near a town with hotels etc. The program began and remains a project under the supervision of the modern dancer and Ynnan highlands born Yang Liping, which is why the movements as seen by the camera are so dance-like - so reminisce...
