In which John Green teaches you about the Protestant Reformation. Prior to the Protestant Reformation, pretty much everyone in Europe was a Roman Catholic. Not to get all great man, but Martin Luther changed all that. Martin Luther didn't like the corruption he saw in the church, especially the sale of indulgences, so he left the church and started his own. And it caught on! And it really did kind of change the world. The changes increased literacy and education, and some even say the Protestant Reformation was the beginning of Capitalism in Europe.

I realized in high school that if there are 30,000 denominations of Christianity in addition to so many other religions that the church I grew up in is probably wrong. In college I studied Philosophy and Religion and in addition to being exposed to so many different belief systems, it was engrained in me to value seeking truth above what is comfortable or what you think you want. Doubting my beliefs and fully trying to understand other religious perspectives is the only way I see to be ethical in holding any beliefs. This is my current view on the Orthodox Church. I mostly love it.

Protestantism
Protestantism is a form of Christian faith and practice which originated with the Protestant Reformation, a movement against what its followers considered to be errors in the Roman Catholic Church. It is one of the three major divisions of Christendom, together with Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.Anglicanism is sometimes considered to be independent from Protestantism. The term derives from the letter of protestation from Lutheran princes in 1529 against an edict condemning the teachings of Martin Luther as heretical.
With its origins in Germany, the modern movement is popularly considered to have begun in 1517 when Luther published The Ninety-Five Theses as a reaction against abuses in the sale of indulgences, which purported to offer remission of sin to their purchasers. The Protestant Reformation, often referred to simply as the Reformation (from Latin reformatio, lit. "restoration, renewal"), was a schism from the Roman Catholic Church initiated by Martin Luther, John Calvin, Huldrych Zwingli and other early Protestant Reformers in the 16th century Europe.
Although there had been significant earlier attempts to reform the Roman Catholic Church before Luther — such as those of Jan Hus, Peter Waldo, and John Wycliffe — it is Martin Luther who is widely acknowledged to have started the Reformation with his 1517 work The Ninety-Five Theses. Luther began by criticizing the selling of indulgences, insisting that the Pope had no authority over purgatory and that the Catholic doctrine of the merits of the saints had no foundation in the gospel. The Protestant position, however, would come to incorporate doctrinal changes such as sola scriptura and sola fide. The core motivation behind these changes was theological, though many other factors played a part, including the rise of nationalism, the Western Schism which eroded people's faith in the Papacy, the perceived corruption of the Roman Curia, the impact of humanism and the new learning of the Renaissance which questioned much of the traditional thought.

I realized in high school that if there are 30,000 denominations of Christianity in addition to so many other religions that the church I grew up in is probably wrong. In college I studied Philosophy and Religion and in addition to being exposed to so many different belief systems, it was engrained in me to value seeking truth above what is comfortable or what you think you want. Doubting my beliefs and fully trying to understand other religious perspectives is the only way I see to be ethical in holding any beliefs. This is my current view on the Orthodox Church. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky traveled to Donetsk to attend secret Protestant churches, and spoke with members of the Donetsk People’s Republic as well as the Orthodox Church to find out whether the DPR’s vision for the rebel-controlled region includes the coexistence of religious beliefs.

I realized in high school that if there are 30,000 denominations of Christianity in addition to so many other religions that the church I grew up in is probably wrong. In college I studied Philosophy and Religion and in addition to being exposed to so many different belief systems, it was engrained in me to value seeking truth above what is comfortable or what you think you want. Doubting my beliefs and fully trying to understand other religious perspectives is the only way I see to be ethical in holding any beliefs. This is my current view on the Orthodox Church. I mostly love it.
