The head of the African Union (AU) arrived in Burkina Faso on Monday for talks with the country's interim leader, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, on finding a solution to the political crisis there, after opposition protests forced President Blaise Compaore to resign last week after 27 years in power.
AU chief Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is also president of Mauritania, held talks with Zida in the capital, Ouagadougou.
At a news conference afterwards, Abdel Aziz said that the AU's role would be one of support for Burkina Faso.
"We (the African Union) are not here to impose sanctions but to help our Burkinabe brothers find the solutions for themselves and these solutions will ultimately be decided by the Burkina people," he said.
Opposition leaders and members of civil society had continued meetings over the weekend in Ouagadougou to decide the composition of a transitional government, after the military stepped into the void formed by the ousting of Compaore.
International envoys are pressing the West African country to quickly designate a civilian leader for a transitional period until new elections can be held.

Charity groups say its because judges are poorly educated about sexual violence, and outdated laws make it difficult to bring rapists to justice.

i/mɔːrɪˈteɪniə/ (Arabic: موريتانيا Mūrītānyā; Berber: Muritanya or Agawej; Wolof: Gànnaar; Soninke: Murutaane; Pulaar: Moritani), officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa. It is the eleventh largest country in Africa and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Morocco and the remnants of Western Sahara in the north, Algeria in the northeast, Mali in the east and southeast, and Senegal in the southwest.
The country derives its name from the ancient Berber Kingdom of Mauretania, which existed from the 3rd century BC to the 7th century AD, in the far north of modern-day Morocco. Approximately 90% of Mauritania's land is within the Sahara and consequently the population is concentrated in the south, where precipitation is slightly higher. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast, which is home to around one-third of the country's 3.5 million people. The government was overthrown on 6 August 2008, in a military coup d'état led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. On 16 April 2009, Aziz resigned from the military to run for president in the 19 July elections, which he won.

Mauritania's president and current African Union (AU) chief arrives and meets Zida
The head of the African Union (AU) arrived in Burkina Faso on Monday for talks with the country's interim leader, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, on finding a solution to the political crisis there, after opposition protests forced President Blaise Compaore to resign last week after 27 years in power. AU chief Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is also president of Mauritania, held talks with Zida in the capital, Ouagadougou. At a news conference afterwards, Abdel Aziz said that the AU's role would be one of support for Burkina Faso. "We (the African Union) are not here to impose sanctions but to help our Burkinabe brothers find the solutions for themselves and these solutions will ultimately be decided by the Burkina people," he said. The head of the African Union (AU) arrived in Burkina Faso on Monday for talks with the country's interim leader, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, on finding a solution to the political crisis there, after opposition protests forced President Blaise Compaore to resign last week after 27 years in power.
AU chief Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is also president of Mauritania, held talks with Zida in the capital, Ouagadougou.
At a news conference afterwards, Abdel Aziz said that the AU's role would be one of support for Burkina Faso.
"We (the African Union) are not here to impose sanctions but to help our Burkinabe brothers find the solutions for themselves and these solutions will ultimately be decided by the Burkina people," he said.
Opposition leaders and members of civil society had continued meetings over the weekend in Ouagadougou to decide the composition of a transitional government, after the military stepped into the void formed by the ousting of Compaore.
International envoys are pressing the West African country to quickly designate a civilian leader for a transitional period until new elections can be held.

China thanks Mauritania for its consistent support for China on issues concerning China's core interests and major concerns, and will continue to support Mauritania's efforts to safeguard stability and seek development.
China is willing to expand cooperation with Mauritania in the fields of culture, journalism, education, youths and humanities. China also would like to work together with the Mauritanian side in deepening the traditional cooperation in infrastructure construction, mining and fishery.
China hopes to open new grounds for cooperation in agriculture, water and electricity, as well as clean energy.
On his part, Aziz said Mauritania would like to further deepen bilateral cooperation in socio-economic development and welcomes Chinese investment in Mauritania.
As the international community is facing more and more common challenges, Mauritania expects the two sides to strengthen coordination and communication in international affairs.

The well-known Senegalese Fula musician Baaba Maal sings in Pulaar on his recordings. Zaghareet or ululation is a popular form of vocal music formed by rapidly moving the tongue sideways and making a sharp, high sound.
Fulani music is as varied as its people. The numerous sub-groups all maintain unique repertoires of music and dance. Songs and dances reflect traditional life and are specifically designed for each individual occasion. Music is played at any occasion: when herding cattle, working in the fields, preparing food, or at the temple. Music is extremely important to the village life cycle with field cultivation, harvest and winnowing of millet performed to the rhythm of the songs and drums.
Fulani herders have a special affinity for the flute and violin nianioru. The young Fulani shepherd like to whistle and sing softly as they wander the silent savannah with cattle and goats. The truly Fulani instruments are the one-string viola of the Fulani (nianioru), the flute, the two to five string lute hoddu or molo, and the buuba and bawdi set of drums. But they are also influenced by the other instruments of the region such as the beautiful West African harp, the kora, and the balafon. Entertainment is the role of certain casts. The performance of music is the realm of specialized casts. The Griots or Awlube recite the history of the people, places and events of the community.
A significant proportion of their number, (an estimated 13 million), are nomadic, making them the largest pastoral nomadic group in the world.[6] Spread over many countries, they are found mainly in West Africa and northern parts of Central Africa, but also in Sudan and Egypt.
African countries where they are present include Mauritania, Ghana, Senegal, Guinea, the Gambia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Niger, Chad, Togo, Gabon, South Sudan the Central African Republic, Liberia, and as far East as the Red Sea in Sudan and Egypt. With the exception of Guinea, where the Fula make up an ethnic plurality (largest single ethnic group) or approximately 49%+ of the population,[10] and Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Cameroon, Fulas are minorities in nearly all other countries they live in. Alongside, many also speak other languages of the countries they inhabit, making many Fulani bilingual or even trilingual in nature. Such languages include Hausa, Bambara, Wolof, and Arabic.

The Fula people or Fulani or Fulɓe (Fula: Fulɓe; French: Peul; Hausa: Fulani; Portuguese: Fula; Wolof: Pël; Bambara: Fulaw) numbering approximately 20 million people in total are one of the most widely dispersed and culturally diverse of the peoples of Africa.The Fulani are bound together by the common language of Fulfulde, as well as by some basic elements of Fulbe culture, such as the pulaaku, a code of conduct common to all Fulani groups.
The Fula have a rich musical culture and play a variety of traditional instruments including drums, hoddu (a plucked skin-covered lute similar to a banjo), and riti or riiti (a one-string bowed instrument similar to a violin), in addition to vocal music. The well-known Senegalese Fula musician Baaba Maal sings in Pulaar on his recordings. Zaghareet or ululation is a popular form of vocal music formed by rapidly moving the tongue sideways and making a sharp, high sound.
Fulani music is as varied as its people. The numerous sub-groups all maintain unique repertoires of music and dance. Songs and dances reflect traditional life and are specifically designed for each individual occasion. Music is played at any occasion: when herding cattle, working in the fields, preparing food, or at the temple. Music is extremely important to the village life cycle with field cultivation, harvest and winnowing of millet performed to the rhythm of the songs and drums.
Fulani herders have a special affinity for the flute and violin nianioru. The young Fulani shepherd like to whistle and sing softly as they wander the silent savannah with cattle and goats. The truly Fulani instruments are the one-string viola of the Fulani (nianioru), the flute, the two to five string lute hoddu or molo, and the buuba and bawdi set of drums. But they are also influenced by the other instruments of the region such as the beautiful West African harp, the kora, and the balafon. Entertainment is the role of certain casts. The performance of music is the realm of specialized casts. The Griots or Awlube recite the history of the people, places and events of the community.
A significant proportion of their number, (an estimated 13 million), are nomadic, making them the largest pastoral nomadic group in the world.[6] Spread over many countries, they are found mainly in West Africa and northern parts of Central Africa, but also in Sudan and Egypt.
African countries where they are present include Mauritania, Ghana, Senegal, Guinea, the Gambia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Niger, Chad, Togo, Gabon, South Sudan the Central African Republic, Liberia, and as far East as the Red Sea in Sudan and Egypt. With the exception of Guinea, where the Fula make up an ethnic plurality (largest single ethnic group) or approximately 49%+ of the population,[10] and Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Cameroon, Fulas are minorities in nearly all other countries they live in. Alongside, many also speak other languages of the countries they inhabit, making many Fulani bilingual or even trilingual in nature. Such languages include Hausa, Bambara, Wolof, and Arabic.

Close to 170,000 refugees now live in the countries bordering Mali. They hear the stories of the continuing violence back in Mali. They will not return home any time soon. -
