Brockton's fight to reduce crime begins with an aggressive, relentless pursuit of criminals. We have targeted the city's most hardcore criminals because we believe if you identify and remove the most frequent repeat offenders, crime will go down. In our first year, we compiled a list of the Top 40 repeat offenders. We arrested 31 of them, for a total of 38 arrests, some were arrested more than once. We are arresting the most dangerous criminals. We now need the judges to stop putting them back on the streets. We have established pro active police patrols targeting street level quality of life crimes that do not belong in our neighborhoods such as drug dealing and prostitution. We created a motorcycle division. Eight motorcycle units are patrolling our streets regularly and they've increased the safety of our neighborhoods. They're flexible. They respond quickly. And they're popular with the residents of the city. And most recently, for the first time in 8 years, police officers have been put on bicycles to patrol our parks, playgrounds and business districts. We are following through with our promise to add to our officers. We have nine cadets in the academy and for the first time, that class will reflect the diversity of our city. And we will be adding 12 more. That's 21 new police officers in less than a year. We've increased our narcotic and gang detective units and have nearly doubled the number of drug raids. We're very wisely investing in technology that will make the police more effective. The most up to date shot spotter technology is being installed. We will know within 30 seconds the exact location of a gunshot. And soon, we will introduce fingerprint technology that will allow prints to come back within ten minutes to confirm the identity of an individual who has presented false ID. We have also pushed a city wide campaign to install video surveillance cameras pointed at public areas. We are working with property owners and local businesses to install cameras and improve lighting. Cameras and proper lighting make the city streets safer. The mission is clear. This is our city and we will continue to fight for it.
