Doug Gillespie
Doug Gillespie (13 December 1887 – 6 January 1946) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
Gillespie was discovered by Jack Worrall when the Carlton coach saw him kicking the ball with some friends at Princes Park. He was used at full-back by Carlton and played in premiership teams in 1906 and 1907, his first two seasons. Gillespie missed out on being part of Carlton's third successive premiership in 1908 due to injury.
He was embroiled in controversy during the 1910 VFL season when he was implicated in a bribery scandal at Carlton. Along with Alex Lang and Doug Fraser, Gillespie was dropped for the Semi Final against South Melbourne while the club and league investigated the allegations that they had been paid to play poorly. However, unlike his two teammates, Gillespie was exonerated and picked for the Grand Final. For the second year in a row he finished the premiership decider on the losing team.
The full-back spent the 1911 football season with Brunswick in the VFA before returning to Carlton the following year where he made his tenth finals appearance before retiring. Out of Gillespie's 90 VFL matches at Carlton, he finished in the winning side 75 times.

Mr. Williams was born in 1949. Although I am known formally as Walter J. Williams, my friends call me “John.” For 30 years, I have been a private consulting economist and, out of necessity, had to become a specialist in government economic reporting.
One of my early clients was a large manufacturer of commercial airplanes, who had developed an econometric model for predicting revenue passenger miles. The level of revenue passenger miles was their primary sales forecasting tool, and the model was heavily dependent on the GNP (now GDP) as reported by the Department of Commerce. Suddenly, their model stopped working, and they asked me if I could fix it. I realized the GNP numbers were faulty, corrected them for my client (official reporting was similarly revised a couple of years later) and the model worked again, at least for a while, until GNP methodological changes eventually made the underlying data worthless.
That began a lengthy process of exploring the history and nature of economic reporting and in interviewing key people involved in the process from the early days of government reporting through the present. For a number of years I conducted surveys among business economists as to the quality of government statistics (the vast majority thought it was pretty bad), and my results led to front page stories in 1989 in the New York Times and Investors Daily (now Investors Business Daily), considerable coverage in the broadcast media and a joint meeting with representatives of all the government's statistical agencies.
Nonetheless, the quality of government reporting has deteriorated sharply in the last couple of decades. Reporting problems have included methodological changes to economic reporting that have pushed headline economic and inflation results out of the realm of real-world or common experience.
Over the decades, well in excess of 1,000 presentations have been given on the economic outlook, or on approaches to analyzing economic data, to clients—large and small—including talks with members of the business, banking, government, press, academic, brokerage and investment communities. I also have provided testimony before Congress (details here).
An old friend—the late-Doug Gillespie—asked me some years back to write a series of articles on the quality of government statistics. The response to those writings (the Primer Series available at the top-center of this page) was so strong that we started ShadowStats.com (Shadow Government Statistics) in 2004. Mr. Williams was born in 1949. He received an A.B. in Economics, cum laude, from Dartmouth College in 1971, and was awarded a M.B.A. from Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business Administration in 1972, where he was named an Edward Tuck Scholar. During his career as a consulting economist, John has worked with individuals as well as Fortune 500 companies.
Although I am known formally as Walter J. Williams, my friends call me “John.” For 30 years, I have been a private consulting economist and, out of necessity, had to become a specialist in government economic reporting.
One of my early clients was a large manufacturer of commercial airplanes, who had developed an econometric model for predicting revenue passenger miles. The level of revenue passenger miles was their primary sales forecasting tool, and the model was heavily dependent on the GNP (now GDP) as reported by the Department of Commerce. Suddenly, their model stopped working, and they asked me if I could fix it. I realized the GNP numbers were faulty, corrected them for my client (official reporting was similarly revised a couple of years later) and the model worked again, at least for a while, until GNP methodological changes eventually made the underlying data worthless.
That began a lengthy process of exploring the history and nature of economic reporting and in interviewing key people involved in the process from the early days of government reporting through the present. For a number of years I conducted surveys among business economists as to the quality of government statistics (the vast majority thought it was pretty bad), and my results led to front page stories in 1989 in the New York Times and Investors Daily (now Investors Business Daily), considerable coverage in the broadcast media and a joint meeting with representatives of all the government's statistical agencies.
Nonetheless, the quality of government reporting has deteriorated sharply in the last couple of decades. Reporting problems have included methodological changes to economic reporting that have pushed headline economic and inflation results out of the realm of real-world or common experience.
Over the decades, well in excess of 1,000 presentations have been given on the economic outlook, or on approaches to analyzing economic data, to clients—large and small—including talks with members of the business, banking, government, press, academic, brokerage and investment communities. I also have provided testimony before Congress (details here).
An old friend—the late-Doug Gillespie—asked me some years back to write a series of articles on the quality of government statistics. The response to those writings (the Primer Series available at the top-center of this page) was so strong that we started ShadowStats.com (Shadow Government Statistics) in 2004. The newsletter is published as part of my economic consulting services. — John Williams

(Military reader no photo) Eight military personnel received minor injuries when a set of aircraft Shelters collapsed during a severe wind storm at approximately 5 p.m., last night. Emergency Forces responded immediately and the injured were taken to the Mike O' Callaghan Federal Hospital in Las Vegas for unknown injuries and currently being assessed at this time. The incident is under investigation and more details will be released as they become available.
(Nellis reader no photo) At the direction of higher headquarters, Nellis, Creech and the Nevada Test and Training Range recently increased the Force Protection Condition level of the installation to FPCON Bravo. The heightened security measures apply to all members of the installation to include DOD military and civilian personnel and supporting defense contractors, as well as all persons visiting any facilities. Visitors should allow extra time getting to their on base destinations and be prepared for delays and 100 percent ID checks at entrance gates. The FPCON system is directed by the Department of Defense to position military facilities against possible threats. These levels can be adjusted by commanders based on local conditions, specific threat information or guidance from higher headquarters.

A counterterrorism official say that law enforcement officials have been investigating the intelligence since it was received late Wednesday night. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security information. The counterterrorism official says the information in the threat is so specific and comes just days before the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that it could not be ignored. Security measures around the country, including in New York and Washington, have been enhanced in the weeks leading up to the anniversary.
(Walmart Reader with photo) A man who shot a Metro Police officer wearing a bullet-proof vest was killed by police this morning inside a Walmart store in the western Las Vegas Valley. Metro homicide said officers responded at 4:24 a.m. to the Walmart Supercenter on Rainbow Blvd., near Spring Mountain Road, after receiving reports that a man and woman were trying to use a fraudulent credit or debit card to purchase a large amount of items. Three or four officers responded to the scene and police tried to take the man into custody. According to reports, the suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband and began to fire at officers. At least one officer fired back. The gunman's injuries initially were described as critical, but he died shortly after the shooting. Sheriff Doug Gillespie said the gunman shot the officer multiple times in the chest, striking his bullet-proof vest, and in the left arm. Gillespie said the officer was doing well at University Medical Center.
(Power outage) A power outage is affecting millions of people across southern California, Arizona and Mexico.San Diego Gas & Electric Company. Crews believe the outage was caused by a system breakdown and assured people it was not the result of a terror attack. The outage that started shortly before 4 p.m. and extends from San Clemente, Calif. to San Diego to Yuma, Arizona. It also is affecting cities south of the border across much of the state of northern Baja. Power is expected to be returned today.

The Pahrump Party supply is holding their annual 9-11 Remembrance event on Sunday morning beginning at 8:30 on Highway 160.
The Kiwanis will be holding an event at the Cabin on the property of Terrible's Town at Hwy 372 and 160 beginning at 5 pm with the reading of all the names who lost their lives as a result of the Septmeber 11th attack.
The VFW will be holding an event at the post on Homestead road beginning at 1 pm on Sunday. This will include a flag burning ceremony.
