A backlight is a form of illumination used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs). As LCDs do not produce light by themselves (unlike for example Cathode ray tube (CRT) displays), they need illumination (ambient light or a special light source) to produce a visible image. Backlights illuminate the LCD from the side or back of the display panel, unlike frontlights, which are placed in front of the LCD. Backlights are used in small displays to increase readability in low light conditions such as in wristwatches, and are used in computer displays and LCD televisions to produce light in a manner similar to a CRT display. A review of some early backlighting schemes for LCDs is given in a report by Peter J. Wild IEEE First-Hand History under its section Backlit LCDs.
Simple types of LCD displays such as in digital watches are built without an internal light source, requiring external light sources to convey the display image to the user. Most LCD screens, however, are built with an internal light source. Such LCD screens consist of several layers. The backlight is usually the first layer from the back. But in order to create screen images, a mechanism is needed to regulate the light intensity of the screen's pixels. For this, light valves are used that vary the amount of light reaching the target by blocking its passage in some way. The most common element is a polarizing filter to polarize the light from the source in one of two transverse directions and then passing it through a switching polarizing filter, to block the path of undesirable light.

http://www.adorama.com Just because there’s harsh midday light doesn’t mean you need to put your camera down or get out an arsenal of strobes and reflectors to try to save the day. In fact, by simply learning how to work with backlight, you will have a tool that will allow you to continue working from sunup to sundown. In this Tech Tip, photographer and director Corey Rich works with a trail runner in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to show why backlighting works midday. He creates compelling, beautiful images by exposing for the shadows, using a shallow depth of field, and creating a natural rim light that separates his subject from the background. vpro Backlight: The Smart State We think new technology is developed by hip companies like Google and Apple. But is this true? VPRO Backlight explores the innovation climate in Europe, to find out what role governments and the private sector play in this. Who finances the development, and who profits from it? What would the iPhone be worth without the internet, GPS and touchscreen technology? All these components didn’t originate from Apple, but from research institutes, universities and government-funded companies. VPRO Backlight explores where new technologies, from medicines to gizmos, come from, who finances their development and who profits from them. We have gotten used to seeing new technology as something devised by smart, trendy techies at companies like Apple or Google. Italia...
What's meant by Backlighting? Backlighting simply means having the light coming towards the camera from behind whatever it is you're photographing. It's also called shooting against the light. Yes I know we were all told to put the light behind us but doing the opposite can yield some super cool photos. So why is this? Some images like portraits work best in shade and when you shoot into the light the side facing you will be in shade and there'll be a lovely rim light around them. Translucent things like wine bottles and ice always look their best when the light is coming through them from behind. When you backlight a photo bear in mind that your camera can become confused because sometimes the background will be much brighter than the foreground. Left to it's own devices it'll make the ...

Wala mang katiyakan, muling pagsasama
