War has been a popular topic for movies for a long time. After all, the source of conflict is built in, and heroes and villains are easy to find when life, country, and freedom are on the line. In the last 40 years, the American Soldier has played every role possible: Hero, villain, anti-hero, victim, clown, dramatic foil… If war is a where a man finds himself, then perhaps war movies are where nations find their collective selves.
How has the American Soldier as a character changed from Patton to Chris Kyle? Does presenting a soldier as damaged threaten our perception of her heroism? What current political ideologies influence filmmakers during times of controversial wars? We’ll answer all this and more. In WAAAAY less time than that Film Studies elective you were considering. A video for an American History Class. It covers the "boom" in American cinema from the silent films to the "talkie", the Jazz Singer, in 1927. It then transitions into the musicals of the time. I realize the video of Fred Astaire from "Blue Skies" is 1947, but I felt the curtains up and then down at the end, plus the transition rate of the number, is absolutely perfect for surrounding the spirit of the thing. I do not own the rights to any of the footage in this video, nor the music involved.

The cinema of the United States, also known as Hollywood, has had a profound effect on cinema across the world since the early 20th century. Its history is sometimes separated into four main periods: the silent film era, classical Hollywood cinema, New Hollywood, and the contemporary period. While the Lumiere Brothers are generally credited with the birth of modern cinema, it is undisputably American cinema that soon became the most dominant force in an emerging industry. Since the 1920s, the American film industry has grossed more money every year than that of any other country.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all-time. Houston was one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide. She released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts, as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for "How Will I Know", influenced several African American female artists to follow in her footsteps.
Houston is the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits. She is the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly "Top Pop Album") on the Billboard magazine year-end charts. Houston's 1985 debut album Whitney Houston became the best-selling debut album by a female act at the time of its release. The album was named Rolling Stone's best album of 1986, and was ranked at number 254 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Her second studio album Whitney (1987) became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

It then transiti...A video for an American History Class. It covers the "boom" in American cinema from the silent films to the "talkie", the Jazz Singer, in 1927. It then transitions into the musicals of the time. I realize the video of Fred Astaire from "Blue Skies" is 1947, but I felt the curtains up and then down at the end, plus the transition rate of the number, is absolutely perfect for surrounding the spirit of the thing.
