Harrison Ford was not originally cast for the role of Dr. Kimble. Instead, a number of actors were auditioned for the part, including Alec Baldwin, Nick Nolte, Kevin Costner, and Michael Douglas. Nolte in particular felt he was too old for the role despite only being a year older than Ford. Although the role of Gerard went to Tommy Lee Jones, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight were both considered for the role. The character of Dr. Nichols was recast for Jeroen Krabbé after the original actor who landed the role, Richard Jordan, fell ill with a brain tumour. Jordan subsequently died three weeks after the film's release

The Fugitive (1993 film)
The Fugitive is a 1993 American action thriller film based on the 1960s television series of the same name created by Roy Huggins. It was directed by Andrew Davis and stars Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. After being wrongfully convicted for the murder of his wife, Dr. Richard Kimble (Ford) escapes from custody and sets out to prove his innocence while pursued by a team of U.S. Marshals led by Deputy Samuel Gerard (Jones).
The Fugitive premiered in the United States on August 6, 1993 and was a major critical and commercial success. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture; Jones won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It was followed by a 1998 sequel, U.S. Marshals, in which Jones reprised his role as Gerard.
Plot
Dr. Richard Kimble, a prominent Chicago vascular surgeon, arrives home to find his wife Helen fatally wounded by a one-armed man. Kimble struggles with the killer but he escapes. The lack of evidence of a break-in, Helen's lucrative life insurance policy, and a misunderstood 9-1-1 call result in Kimble's conviction of first-degree murder. Being transported to death row by bus, his fellow prisoners attempt an escape. The pandemonium sends the bus down a ravine and into the path of an oncoming train. Kimble escapes the collision and flees. Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard and his colleagues Renfro, Biggs, Newman and Poole arrive at the crash site. They begin searching for Kimble. Kimble sneaks into a hospital to treat his wounds and alter his appearance. He eludes the authorities, but Gerard corners him at the edge of a storm drain over a dam. Kimble leaps into the raging water and escapes.

An interesting look at the way The Fugitive was edited for TV in Australia by 9Gem. It was edited to meet the guidelines of a PG rating so it could avoid an M rating and be played before 8.30pm. The scene in the opening credits where Helen Kimble (Sela Ward) is murdered is heavily censored for some reason. They cut about half of the shot where she's being strangled, but slowed it down, so it's really the same length. They then cut the shot where the assailant throws her to the ground, but kept the shot of his arm moving, and again slowed it down. They shot of her on the ground holding a gun and the assailant pushing her arm away, which they again slowed down. None of those cuts make any sense. Maybe it's because they interpreted the violence as sexual, which it isn't. Maybe it's because it's violence against women, which is kinda sexist if they think it's worse than violence against men. They cut the assailant shooting Helen. They cut the shot of him moving his gun towards her stomach, and the shot of her face while he shoots her, but they kept the last part of the shot of her face, because there it doesn't look like she was shot. The sight of people being shot or stabbed is often cut for a PG rating on the Nine Network (Channel 9, 9Gem and 9Go!), even if there's no blood. The second cut was to the bus crash scene. They completely cut the prisoner stabbing the guard, and also cut the sight of him pulling the shank out of his sock. In the shot of Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) they also seem to have muted the sound of the guard screaming in pain, which the The Nine Network sometimes does for a PG rating. They also completely cut the guard shooting the prisoner. These cuts make the scene make no sense. They also cut the shot of the driver being accidentally shot. This time they kept the gun being fired, and just cut the shot of the driver falling down. This is the cut that makes the most sense, because it seems like blood splatters onto the windscreen. The sight of blood coming out of a deep, fatal wound of a person's head or torso is usually cut for a PG rating. The third cut was to the scene where Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) shoots Copeland (Eddie Bo Smith Jr) twice. They kept the first shot of Gerard shooting, because it doesn't show Copeland. But they cut the shot of Copeland falling down after the second shot. The fourth cut was to the scene where Fredrick Sykes (Andreas Katsulas) shoots a cop. Again, they kept the shot of him shooting, but cut the shot of the cop being shot and falling down. They also cut the fight between Kimble and Sykes. They show Sykes being punched in the face twice and kicked in the stomach once. They cut the shot of the train window where he's stumbling for continuity reasons, and they cut Kimble hitting him in the head with a gun, but kept the end of that shot where he falls down. The result is it looks like the kick to the stomach knocked him out somehow. They also cut the start of the shot where Kimble slams Sykes's head into the train door, but kept the end of that shot, so it looks like he just fell asleep. For some reason they cut the line "you missed your stop before. Australian TV stations sometimes cut beatings for a PG rating, and to a lesser extent an M rating, but those rules are all over the place. It seems like each editor chooses a number of hits that's appropriate to show. Sometimes it's one, sometimes it's five, etc. In The Fugitive, it seems like it was three. The Fugitive TV Version -

When the move The Fugitive was released in 1993 I was adamant to see it straight away. Harrison Ford was one of Hollywood's hot properties and, moreover, a leading role had been given to Tommy Lee Jones, for whom I had grown a soft spot. Initial reviews were glowing and critics seem to agree unanimously that a potential cult movie had been born. When I left the movie theatre I wasn't sure what had kept me spellbound; the special effects, the storyline, Ford's and Jones' terrific acting or that I'd actually met one of the actors -- Jeroen Krabbè - two or three times in real life. Or, of course, all of the above. Loving movies, it wasn't the first time I saw a good production, but this time something else was at play -- and, for the life of me, I couldn't figure out what it was. The Fugitive 1993 Behind the Scenes
Harrison Ford was not originally cast for the role of Dr. Kimble. Instead, a number of actors were auditioned for the part, including Alec Baldwin, Nick Nolte, Kevin Costner, and Michael Douglas. Nolte in particular felt he was too old for the role despite only being a year older than Ford. Although the role of Gerard went to Tommy Lee Jones, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight were both considered for the role. An interesting look at the way The Fugitive was edited for TV in Australia by 9Gem. It was edited to meet the guidelines of a PG rating so it could avoid an M rating and be played before 8.30pm. The scene in the opening credits where Helen Kimble (Sela Ward) is murdered is heavily censored for some reason. They cut about half of the shot where she's being strangled, but slowed it down, so it's really the same length. They then cut the shot where the assailant throws her to the ground, but kept the shot of his arm moving, and again slowed it down. They shot of her on the ground holding a gun and the assailant pushing her arm away, which they again slowed down. None of those cuts make any sense. When the move The Fugitive was released in 1993 I was adamant to see it straight away. Harrison Ford was one of Hollywood's hot properties and, moreover, a leading role had been given to Tommy Lee Jones, for whom I had grown a soft spot. Initial reviews were glowing and critics seem to agree unanimously that a potential cult movie had been born. They then cut the shot where the assailant throws her to the ground, but kept the shot of his arm moving, and again slowed it down. They shot of her on the ground holding a gun and the assailant pushing her arm away, which they again slowed down. None of those cuts make any sense. Maybe it's because they interpreted the violence as sexual, which it isn't. Maybe it's because it's violence against women, which is kinda sexist if they think it's worse than violence against men. They cut the assailant shooting Helen. They cut the shot of him moving his gun towards her stomach, and the shot of her face while he shoots her, but they kept the last part of the shot of her face, because there it doesn't look like she was shot. The sight of people being shot or stabbed is often cut for a PG rating on the Nine Network (Channel 9, 9Gem and 9Go!), even if there's no blood.
The second cut was to the bus crash scene. They completely cut the prisoner stabbing the guard, and also cut the sight of him pulling the shank out of his sock. In the shot of Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) they also seem to have muted the sound of the guard screaming in pain, which the The Nine Network sometimes does for a PG rating. They also completely cut the guard shooting the prisoner. These cuts make the scene make no sense. They also cut the shot of the driver being accidentally shot. This time they kept the gun being fired, and just cut the shot of the driver falling down. This is the cut that makes the most sense, because it seems like blood splatters onto the windscreen. The sight of blood coming out of a deep, fatal wound of a person's head or torso is usually cut for a PG rating.

When the move The Fugitive was released in 1993 I was adamant to see it straight away. Harrison Ford was one of Hollywood's hot properties and, moreover, a leading role had been given to Tommy Lee Jones, for whom I had grown a soft spot. Initial reviews were glowing and critics seem to agree unanimously that a potential cult movie had been born. When I left the movie theatre I wasn't sure what had kept me spellbound; the special effects, the storyline, Ford's and Jones' terrific acting or that I'd actually met one of the actors -- Jeroen Krabbè - two or three times in real life. Or, of course, all of the above.
Loving movies, it wasn't the first time I saw a good production, but this time something else was at play -- and, for the life of me, I couldn't figure out what it was. To get my finger on why I stayed in awe of The Fugitive I went out to buy the VHS to watch it again until I could figure out why the movie kept me so occupied. Read my blog here http://bit.ly/IWUPHy
