The Meteorological Agency says the number of earthquakes around Mount Sakurajima has surged. It is continuing a level-4 alert on its scale of 5. That means residents should be ready to evacuate. Agency officials say seismic activity increased rapidly on Saturday morning. They say they detected more than 1,000 volcanic earthquakes through the day, including several that could be felt by people. The tremors continued on Sunday. More than 40 minor quakes were recorded by 9 AM local time. That's many more than usual. And officials also observed massive tectonic movements in the vicinity of the mountain. They have issued warnings to people living within 3 kilometers of the volcano's Showa and Minamidake craters. They say that big, burning rocks or pyroclastic flows could pose a danger to residential areas.
