"While riding, the child, a boy, is approached by the Erlkönig. The Erlkönig asks the child repeatedly to come with him. The child, knowing that the Erlkönig is an omen of death, refuses each time and asks his father why he does not sense the Erlkönig. The father, in turn, dismisses the son's fears as natural occurrences. He says that the sight of the Erlkönig is merely a wisp of fog, the Erlkönig's voce is only the wind rustling the leaves, and the sight of the Erlkönig's daughters are only willow trees. Only when the Erlkönig hurts his son does the father realize that what his son had been saying was true. When this happens he attempts to get the child home quickly, but he is too late and his son dies in his arms.
Each time the child refuses to accompany him, the Erlkönig tries to entice him with promises of wonderful things. The Erlkönig first offers to play games at the beach as well as offering flowers and golden clothes. When this does not work, the Erlkönig promises to have his daughters dance and rock the boy to sleep at night. When none of these promises attract the boy, the Erlkönig declares that he loves the boy and is charmed by him and will use force if he needs to, to get the boy to come with him. Jessye Norman
Jessye Mae Norman (born September 15, 1945) is an American Grammy award-winning opera singer and recitalist. A dramatic soprano, Norman is associated in particular with the Wagnerian repertoire, and with the roles of Sieglinde, Ariadne, Alceste, and Leonore. Norman has been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and is a Spingarn Medalist. Apart from receiving several honorary doctorates and other awards, she has also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Medal of Arts, and is a member of the British Royal Academy of Music.
Life and career
Early life and musical education
Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia, to Silas Norman, an insurance salesman, and Janie King-Norman, a school teacher. She was one of five children in a family of amateur musicians; her mother and grandmother were both pianists, and her father sang in a local choir. Norman's mother insisted that she start piano lessons at an early age. Norman attended Charles T. Walker Elementary School, A.R. Johnson Junior High School, and Lucy C. Laney Senior High School, all in downtown Augusta.

David Carradine
David Carradine (born John Arthur Carradine; December 8, 1936 – June 3, 2009) was an American actor and martial artist, best known for his leading role as a Shaolin peace-loving monk, Kwai Chang Caine, in the 1970s television series Kung Fu. He was a member of a productive acting family that began with his father, John Carradine. His acting career, which included major and minor roles on stage, television and cinema, spanned over four decades. A prolific "B" movie actor, he appeared in more than 100 feature films and was nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award. The last nomination was for his title role in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.
Films that featured Carradine continued to be released after his death. These posthumous credits were from a variety of genres including horror, action, western, martial arts, drama, science fiction and documentary. In addition to his acting career, Carradine was also a musician and pursued a directing career. Influenced by his most popular acting role, he studied martial arts. The son of a frequently married actor, he had an unstable childhood. This instability would continue throughout his life as he himself was married five times. He was also frequently arrested and prosecuted for a variety of offenses which often involved substance abuse. He died on June 3, 2009, from asphyxiation in a hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand; the main report is that it was a sex-related erotic asphyxiation, however, there has been a controversy over this and some have said he may have been murdered.

Paul Sampson
Paul Christian Sampson (12 July 1977) born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, is an English rugby union footballer who played at wing or full-back for London Welsh, Blackheath, Worcester Warriors, Bath and Wasps.
Early years
In 1995 Sampson was named man-of-the-match in England Schools' record 30-3 win against Australia.
In the summer of 1996, he won the England Schools 100 metres title in 10.48 seconds, beating Dwain Chambers. In July that year he was called into the England rugby squad while still attending Woodhouse Grove School.
Career
Sampson won his first England cap against South Africa at the end of the 1998 Southern hemisphere tour. He won two further caps, both against Canada on the summer North America tour in 2001. All three of his England appearances came on the wing. He also played Sevens for England.
Sampson most notably played for Premiership side London Wasps between 1996 and 2004, appearing for them in over 100 games. He later played for five years at Championship London Welsh from 2006 to 2011, again playing over 100 matches.

"While riding, the child, a boy, is approached by the Erlkönig. The Erlkönig asks the child repeatedly to come with him. The child, knowing that the Erlkönig is an omen of death, refuses each time and asks his father why he does not sense the Erlkönig. The father, in turn, dismisses the son's fears as natural occurrences. He says that the sight of the Erlkönig is merely a wisp of fog, the Erlkönig's voce is only the wind rustling the leaves, and the sight of the Erlkönig's daughters are only willow trees. Only when the Erlkönig hurts his son does the father realize that what his son had been saying was true. When this happens he attempts to get the child home quickly, but he is too late and his son dies in his arms.
Each time the child refuses to accompany him, the Erlkönig tries to entice him with promises of wonderful things. The Erlkönig first offers to play games at the beach as well as offering flowers and golden clothes. When this does not work, the Erlkönig promises to have his daughters dance and rock the boy to sleep at night. When none of these promises attract the boy, the Erlkönig declares that he loves the boy and is charmed by him and will use force if he needs to, to get the boy to come with him. In the course of one night, identities will be revealed, destinies met and a poetic justice of the macabre will be maniacally served, as a merciless Knight resurrects after 700 years to fulfill his vow and bestow a blood-thirst reprisal upon his enemies’ reanimated spirits.

Arnold Schoenberg's historical significance as the father of serialism often obscures the true variety of his output. It also tends to minimize the purely musical (i.e. non-theoretical) aspects of his compositions, regardless of their style. There is perhaps no better cure for this than his eight Brettl-Lieder (Cabaret Songs), which showcase his most basic musical instincts and responses; these eight poems -- dressed, with humor and simplicity, in a tonal language that bears no special label or distinction -- give us a unique and amiable glimpse of Schoenberg's muse.
Schoenberg composed the Brettl-Lieder in 1901, before he moved to Berlin to work as a conductor with Überbrettl, part of Ernst von Wolzogen's Buntes Theater. Designed to use popular idioms to convey more "serious" ideas, Überbrettl (Variety Theater, or Cabaret) attracted literary luminaries of the time, including Frank Wedekind and Richard Dehmel. During the theater company's visit to Vienna in the fall of 1901, Oskar Straus had introduced Wolzogen to Schoenberg, who played some of his recently composed cabaret songs; it is certain that at least one of these, "Nachtwandler," was performed in Berlin before June 1902, when Schoenberg's association with the company ended.
The eight poems are taken in part from a collection, Deutsche Chansons (German Songs), published first in 1900 by Otto Julius Bierbaum. The contents of the volume were antithetical to the conservative literary trend at the end of the nineteenth century, and became an immediate success. Poets of the Brettl-Lieder are Frank Wedekind, Otto Julius Bierbaum, Hugo Salus, Gustav Hochstetter, Colly, Emanuel Schikaneder and Gustav Falke.
Most interesting among Schoenberg's eight settings is that of "Nachtwandler," by Gustav Falke, featuring piccolo, trumpet, and snare drum in addition to piano and soprano. The text calls for a drummer and trumpeter, who accompany the narrator on his nighttime escapes.
Other highlights include Wedekind's "Galathea," in which a narrator describes the desire to touch a young girl, Galathea. He (or she) wants to kiss, in turn, Galathea's cheeks, hair, hands, knees and feet -- but not her mouth, which is reserved for the realm of fantasy. He sets the six verses in a rondo-like fashion -- ABACAD -- closing the song with new music that is similar to the fourth verse.
Schoenberg's setting of Bierbaum's "Gigerlette" reflects both the humor of the poem and its alternating four- and five-line verses. Fräulein Gigerlette, dressed in snow-white clothing, invites someone to tea in a room as red as wine and lit by candles. Later, the two take a carriage ride to the countryside with Cupid as their driver.
Salus' "Der genügsame Liebhaber" (Easily Satisfied Lover) is a poem begging for interpretation. A man tells us that his lady-friend has a black cat with a soft, velvety coat, and that he has a shiny, smooth bald head. The woman spends all her time caressing her cat's fur, and when he visits her, the "kitty" is in her lap, and it shivers when he strokes it. Later, he puts the kitty on his bald head and she plays with the kitty and laughs. Schoenberg's setting, strophic but with significant variation from verse to verse, is full of suggestive humor.
"Einfältiges Lied" (Simple Song) is also by Salus and tells of a king who, without scepter or crown, goes for a walk like an ordinary person. The wind then blows the hat off of his head and out of sight. Schoenberg depicts the uneven, hesitant gait of the king in the opening verse accompaniment, later portraying the wind and flying hat with aggressive, swooping melodies.

Having completed the Five Venetian Songs, Gabriel Fauré wrote a friend feeling that he had just about exhausted for himself the musical potential of the poetry of Paul Verlaine. Luckily for the history of the song cycle, Fauré was to return once more to the French poet, composing the nine-song cycle La bonne chanson. Later in his life Fauré was to claim that he had never written anything as spontaneously as La bonne chanson.
Fauré carefully selected certain poems and even stanzas from Verlaine, reordering them to tell the story of a young couple in love. The cycle begins with "Une Sainte en son aureole" (A saint in her halo). Fauré's overall tonal plan in the cycle is highly idiosyncratic, and even within songs the harmonic sequences are often surprising. Fauré unifies the cycle instead with five musical motifs, the first of which, a lyrically descending melody, is heard at the beginning of "Une Sainte"; it returns both at the end of the song and of the whole cycle. The setting is lighthearted, establishing the uncharacteristically (for Fauré) happy mood of the composition. "Puisque l'aube grandit" (Since daybreak grows) follows, also in triple meter. The accompaniment plays dramatically broad arpeggios against a legato melodic line. Having completed the Five Venetian Songs, Gabriel Fauré wrote a friend feeling that he had just about exhausted for himself the musical potential of the poetry of Paul Verlaine. Luckily for the history of the song cycle, Fauré was to return once more to the French poet, composing the nine-song cycle La bonne chanson. Later in his life Fauré was to claim that he had never written anything as spontaneously as La bonne chanson.
Fauré carefully selected certain poems and even stanzas from Verlaine, reordering them to tell the story of a young couple in love. The cycle begins with "Une Sainte en son aureole" (A saint in her halo). Fauré's overall tonal plan in the cycle is highly idiosyncratic, and even within songs the harmonic sequences are often surprising. Fauré unifies the cycle instead with five musical motifs, the first of which, a lyrically descending melody, is heard at the beginning of "Une Sainte"; it returns both at the end of the song and of the whole cycle. The setting is lighthearted, establishing the uncharacteristically (for Fauré) happy mood of the composition. "Puisque l'aube grandit" (Since daybreak grows) follows, also in triple meter. The accompaniment plays dramatically broad arpeggios against a legato melodic line. A new report by cybersecurity firm FireEye – obtained exclusively by NBC News – says hackers linked to North Korea recently targeted U.S. electric power companies with “spearphishing” emails, the network reported. The emails, which used fake invitations to a fundraiser to target victims, FireEye said, asked users to download the invitation attached to the email but really downloaded malware into the users computer network....
