Zoos are a place for the average person to see animals they might not ever get the chance to observe in the wild. Zoos also have the purpose of conserving certain species, trying to make sure they don't die out to extinction.. and in other cases they can be a sanctuary against poaching and hunters.

As encounters with great apes go, Harambe wasn't the first incident of a child falling into a gorilla enclosure. It happened at the Durrell Wildlife Park in Jersey, Channel Islands in the UK, when Five year old Levan Merrit somehow fell into the zoo's gorilla enclosure, falling far enough that he lost consciousness when he hit the ground.

Pandas. They're endangered, and they're absolutely adorable. That cuteness draws in many crazy panda-fans for Gugu, a panda at the Beijing Zoo. People come from all over to see him, and more than a few have snuck into his enclosure.

This time though, the story has a happy ending, and the man had a good reason for jumping in. 33-year-old Rick Swope was enjoying his day at the Detroit zoo until he came across the chimpanzee exhibit.

The case of the Berlin zoo polar bear attack incident in 2009 is both mysterious and sketchy, and not much is known right down to the name of the woman involved in this incident on our list.

Once again, another case of a two-year-old boy being held on top of the protective railing and falling into an enclosure with several dangerous animals.

A visitor to the Toronto Zoo must have really like her hat, because she jumped down from the observation deck and right next to a flimsy fence that had a tiger behind it, in order to retrieve it. Amidst people yelling at her, calling her a "moron", the woman leaped down and grabbed the hat while the tiger pounced on the fence separating them, desperately trying to get at her.

Long before Europeans arrived in North America, five nations formed a confederacy guided by a Constitution called the Great Law of Peace. Though they are often called Iroquois, their name for themselves is Haudenosaunee, People of the Long House. One of the founders of their confederacy was Hiawatha, an Onondaga chief who lived under the thumb of a brutal war chief named Tadodaho. Hiawatha attempted to convince all the other Onondaga that they should embrace peace, the way their neighbors the Mohawks recently had, but Tadodaho thwarted his efforts. Hiawatha left his home to travel to Mohawk territory and meet a man called the Peacemaker, who had brought peace to the Mohawk. He gave the Peacemaker a string of wampum beads to symbolize his desire for peace, and it soon became clear that they were kindred spirits. The Peacemaker wanted to bring the Five Nations, who had once been brothers, together in peace, and he joined forces with Hiawatha to make it happen. Their first goal: to recrut Jigonsaseh, a Seneca woman already famed for her efforts to establish small, local peace agreements between the warriors who frequented her long house. The Peacemaker described to her his plans for a government where women like her, as clan mothers, played an important role, and she embraced his message. Together they traveled to the Oneida to recruit their first ally. The Oneida debated the wisdom of accepting peace for a full year, but the Peacemaker's passion convinced them and at last they joined. Hiawatha hoped that this alliance would impress Tadodaho enough to get him to join the peace as well, but when they returned to Onondaga territory, Tadodaho made it clear that he still had no interest in their peace. The Peacemaker encouraged Hiawatha to keep thinking about this problem, and meanwhile they traveled to recruit the Cayuga nation. As "little brothers" of the Onondaga, they had suffered greatly from Tadodaho's demands, and an alliance with two other nations struck them as the perfect way to free themselves from him and create a new path for their people. Now only two tribes remained to recruit: the Seneca and the Onondaga.

This is an incomplete list of people known as "The Great". There are many people in history whose names are commonly appended with the phrase "the Great" or the equivalent in their own language. Other languages have their own suffixes such as e Bozorg and e azam in Persian and Urdu respectively and Maha in the devanagari script (Hindi script) as in Mahatma Gandhi.
In Persia, the title "the Great" at first seems to be a colloquial version of the Old Persian title "Great King". This title was first used by the conqueror Cyrus II of Persia. Long before Europeans arrived in North America, five nations formed a confederacy guided by a Constitution called the Great Law of Peace. Though they are often called Iroquois, their name for themselves is Haudenosaunee, People of the Long House. One of the founders of their confederacy was Hiawatha, an Onondaga chief who lived under the thumb of a brutal war chief named Tadodaho. Hiawatha attempted to convince all the other Onondaga that they should embrace peace, the way their neighbors the Mohawks recently had, but Tadodaho thwarted his efforts. Hiawatha left his home to travel to Mohawk territory and meet a man called the Peacemaker, who had brought peace to the Mohawk. He gave the Peacemaker a string of wampum beads to symbolize his desire for peace, and it soon became clear that they were kindred spirits. The Peacemaker wanted to bring the Five Nations, who had once been brothers, together in peace, and he joined forces with Hiawatha to make it happen. Their first goal: to recrut Jigonsaseh, a Seneca woman already famed for her efforts to establish small, local peace agreements between the warriors who frequented her long house. The Peacemaker described to her his plans for a government where women like her, as clan mothers, played an important role, and she embraced his message. Together they traveled to the Oneida to recruit their first ally. The Oneida debated the wisdom of accepting peace for a full year, but the Peacemaker's passion convinced them and at last they joined. Hiawatha hoped that this alliance would impress Tadodaho enough to get him to join the peace as well, but when they returned to Onondaga territory, Tadodaho made it clear that he still had no interest in their peace. The Peacemaker encouraged Hiawatha to keep thinking about this problem, and meanwhile they traveled to recruit the Cayuga nation. As "little brothers" of the Onondaga, they had suffered greatly from Tadodaho's demands, and an alliance with two other nations struck them as the perfect way to free themselves from him and create a new path for their people. Now only two tribes remained to recruit: the Seneca and the Onondaga.

This terrifying video shows the moment a swimmer fought off a great white shark while spear-fishing.
College student Tyler McQuillen was off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, when he encountered the maneater in just 10 feet of water.
The 22-year-old thought he was going to die - and dramatic point-of-view footage reveals how he nearly became a snack for the giant shark.
McQuillen thought his friends were playing a joke on him by pulling at his fin, but he soon realised the shark had bitten his toes.
The shocked swimmer dropped his spear gun but managed to retrieve it moments before the shark charged at him.
A GoPro camera attached to the spear gun captured the heart-stopping moment the great white took a run at McQuillen.
The stunned swimmer hit the shark with his spear gun as it passed him, forcing it to swim away.
He said: "When the shark came around I gave him a nice little jab."
After stabbing the shark, McQuillen shouted at his friends and others on shore to warn them about the danger in the water.
He managed to swim back and make it out of the water alive, although he suffered numerous broken bones in his foot.
Despite the hair-raising encounter, he plans to return to the water once his foot heals.

A large shark took a chomp at a diver's foot, and the frightening incident was all caught on video.
Refugio State Beach near Santa Barbara, California, offers palm-tree-studded Pacific Ocean beach views and recreational fishing opportunities. Tyler McQuillen, a spearfisher, headed into the water there and lived through a scary, real-life version of "Jaws."
A GoPro mounted on McQuillen's speargun filmed the dramatic moments when a confused great white shark mistook him for a meal. Fortunately, he survived.
The video, posted by YouTube user account Jamie Hugg on Monday, shows the shark attack occurring at the very beginning of the footage. Work warning: there's a quick curse word at the very end.
"Extremely lucky to get out of this one alive," reads the video description. A not-safe-for-sensitive-people image shows the aftermath of the shark bite and McQuillen's two broken toes. He was treated at a hospital.
The attack took place on September 1. According to the Ventura County Star, authorities shut down water access at Refugio for 24 hours after the incident.
The Shark Research Committee, a nonprofit research organization, spoke with McQuillen, who reported "I felt a very strong pressure on my right foot and...jerked backwards with such force that I dropped my speargun with GoPro camera attached." He retrieved the speargun and stuck the shark with it when it circled back.
The Shark Research Committee estimated the shark to be up to 10 feet (3 meters) in length. McQuillen believes it was about 12 feet (3.6 meters) long. Either way, that's a big shark.
