"Back in the day, my mom was a homemade yeast roll/fresh bread Diva. No one did it better....except for, maybe, her mom. She also rocked a pot of beans and ham. All us kids, and Dad, too, would sit around whatever table we had and feast on her warm, flaky biscuits, and whatever she had cooking on the stove. And when it came to goulash, the little macaroni, tomato and hamburger kind, she nailed it every time. If it wasn't the all'time most gourmet dish, it always filled our bellies. Mom did that for us. She filled us up with biscuits and her hamburger out until, not only did it taste good, but it was enough to feed all the chirping little birds surrounding her with their mouths open. When we lived in Lennox California, I was in the 6th grade and desperately wanted new shoes for something going on at school. At the time, Mom was working in a coffee shop at the LAX airport. Every night, she would come home from work exhausted, her feet aching and with leg cramps from hell. The night I remember, her work had been slow and she had been on her feet the entire shift earning $4.85 in tips. then she turned around and handed all the money she had to me for those silly sandals. And then I really saw her. she looked so sad as she apologized, to me, for not having more to give.....and that was the first time it occured to me how hard life must have been for her. that moment my eyes opened and I caught a tiny glimpse of her life with all the children she had to tend, all the responsibility she had to shoulder....I think that's when I started to grow up. She searched the DI's and Goodwill's and yard sales like a treasure hunter....always trying to find the nicest things she could for her family. She clobbered bully boys with bread dough in defense of her young ones. She took little for herself; didn't ask much. Mom gave what she had to us all. She did what she could for us all. She loved us as best she knew how. So, this, is my love letter. Thank you, Mom. I love you, too. " -Edie Fauver
