The Seven Wonders of the World (or the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) refers to remarkable constructions of classical antiquity listed by various authors in guidebooks popular among the ancient Hellenic tourists, particularly in the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. The most prominent of these, the versions by Antipater of Sidon and an observer identified as Philo of Byzantium, comprise seven works located around the eastern Mediterranean rim. The original list inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often listing seven entries. Of the original Seven Wonders, only one—the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the ancient wonders—remains relatively intact.

The Greek conquest of much of the known world in the 4th century BC gave Hellenistic travellers access to the civilizations of the Egyptians, Persians, and Babylonians. Impressed and captivated by the landmarks and marvels of the various lands, these travellers began to list what they saw to remember them.
Instead of "wonders", the ancient Greeks spoke of "theamata" (θεάματα), which means "sights", in other words "things to be seen". (Τὰ ἑπτὰ θεάματα τῆς οἰκουμένης [γῆς] Tà heptà theámata tēs oikoumenēs [gēs]) Later, the word for "wonder" ("thaumata" θαύματα) was used, and this is also the case in modern Greek (Επτά θαύματα του αρχαίου κόσμου). Hence, the list was meant to be the Ancient World's counterpart of a travel guidebook.
Each person had his own version of the list, but the best known and earliest surviving was from a poem by Greek-speaking epigrammist Antipater of Sidon from around 140 BC. He named six of the seven sites on his list—leaving out the lighthouse—, but was primarily in praise of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Another 2nd century BC observer, who claimed to be the mathematician Philo of Byzantium, wrote a short account entitled The Seven Sights of the World. However, the incomplete surviving manuscript only covered six of the supposedly seven places, which agreed with Antipater's list.
Earlier and later lists by the historian Herodotus (484 BC--ca. 425 BC) and the architect Callimachus of Cyrene (ca. 305--240 BC), housed at the Museum of Alexandria, survived only as references.
The Colossus of Rhodes was the last of the seven to be completed, after 280 BC, and the first to be destroyed, by an earthquake in 226/225 BC. Hence, all seven existed at the same time for a period of less than 60 years. Antipater had an earlier version which replaced Lighthouse of Alexandria with the Walls of Babylon. Lists which preceded the construction of Colossus of Rhodes completed their seven entries with the inclusion of the Ishtar Gate.
Scope
It is thought that the limitation of the lists to seven entries was attributed to the special magical meaning of the number. Geographically, the list covered only the sculptural and architectural monuments of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, which then comprised the known world for the Greeks. Hence, extant sites beyond this realm were not considered as part of contemporary accounts.
The primary accounts, coming from Hellenistic writers, also heavily influenced the places included in the wonders list. Five of the seven entries are a celebration of Greek accomplishments in the arts and architecture (the exceptions being the Pyramids of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon).

Australia’s popular underwater destination is in peril. Bleaching caused by climate change has killed roughly a quarter of it coral and the reef, which took approximately 8,000 years to form, could be completely gone within the span of a lifetime. 6. Seychelles
This collection of 115 islands is your stereotypical tropical paradise and is home to numerous luxury resorts and a population of roughly 90,000. The islands are located in the Indian Ocean east of Africa. Like so many other islands, they are in danger due to beach erosion and devastating coral die off. It is believed that in the next 50 to 100 years the entire archipelago could be submerged. It is best known for its white sand beaches, nature reserves and rare wildlife.
5. Magdalen Islands
Located in Quebec, Canada these islands are picturesque and a perfect vacation spot. They are filled with sandy beaches and amazing sandstone cliffs. Though there are heavy winds in the area, there is a wall of sea ice blocking and protecting the islands from the worst of it. And this is what will make this beautiful part of the world disappear. Currently the islands erode at an approximate rate of 40 inches a year. And remember that wall of ice? According to experts that will completely melt within the next 75 years. This will fully expose the islands to the elements and once that happens they won’t be around for very long.
4. Madagascar
This island is the fourth largest in the world and the 46th largest country and lies east of the southeast coast of Africa. Madagascar is host to some very unique tropical rainforests and diverse wildlife, including lemurs and mongoose. The destruction of this island is very much man made. Poaching, logging and burning have destroyed the ecosystem and if action isn’t taken it is estimated that those rainforests and wildlife will vanish within 35 years. It is also a simple problem of too many humans on the island to share space. The population of Madagascar is estimated to be just under 23 million, which is slightly less than the population of Australia.
3. Venice
Without intervention it is estimated that Venice will be totally gone by 2100, if not earlier. The problem with Venice is that it lies at sea level and sea levels are rising. This beautiful coastal Italian city is a must see for anyone interested in religion, art, architecture, or just looking for a really nice place to visit. Floods have already put most of the city underwater several times. St. Mark’s square, the principal public square of Venice, actually floods on a yearly basis. The city was founded in 421 A.D. and is one of the most picturesque cities in the world full of a rich history and culture. This destination should be on everyone’s bucket list.
2. Glacier National Park
Located in Montana, this national park established in 1910 was once home to more than 150 glaciers. That number has shrunk to fewer than 25 and those will probably be gone by the year 2030 or sooner. Without the cold water provided by these glaciers the ecosystem of the park will surely be affected dramatically after they are gone. The 1,583 square mile park is teeming with all different kinds of life; it boasts 260 species of birds, 1,132 plant species and 62 species of mammals. It also has more than 700 miles of hiking trails. You would be hard pressed to find a better place to go backpacking and camping. The sooner you go the better because who knows what kind of affect the disappearing glaciers will have on this park’s incredible ecosystem and breathtaking beauty.

About 3 percent of the glacial ice is lost per year, but a whopping 10 percent was lost in the record setting heat of 2003. They are a worldwide tourist destination and are visited by over 120 million people annually. Olympic games have been hosted there, and the region has a strong cultural identity seeped in history. Hannibal led a herd of elephants across the Alps and Napoleon crossed one of its mountain passes with 40,000 soldiers. The mountain range spans 750 miles across Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia and Switzerland. Whatever part of the Alps you choose to visit make sure you make a trip soon or they could be gone forever.

Sailing Stones -- Here’s a phenomenon that has occurred in various locations around the world … but most notably at Racetrack Playa in California’s Death Valley National Park. Huge rocks, some weighing up to 700 pounds, seem to move all by themselves, with no apparent intervention from humans or animals … often leaving trails over 300 feet long. Some trails were curved, while others travel in a straight line, then abruptly shift to the right or left. What’s behind the mystery? Some theories suggest the big stones move as a result of water and ice forming in Death Valley under certain winter conditions. A breeze could then “float” the rocks across the muddy bottom of the valley floor … leaving trails in the mud as the stones moved. Research conducted in 2015 suggested that sailing stones found in Spain’s Manchego (man-chay-go) Lagoon moved as a result of microbacteria living on the lagoon floor. The microorganisms created slippery conditions allowing the stones to move during the rainy season when wind and water currents were at their strongest. No theory has been been definitively proven.
Cave of the Crystals -- it’s located almost 1,000 feet below the surface in Naica (nigh-ka), Chihuahua Mexico … and is known to hold some of the largest natural crystals ever found. While they look icy, the massive crystals are forged in temperatures up 122 degrees Fahrenheit … and were developed over 500,000 years in mineral rich water … and they can measure up to 4 feet wide and 50 feet long! These hidden caves were drained over 40 years ago, but the crystals made of gypsum were unearthed by miners in 2000. Because temperatures in the caves can reach 136 degrees, and humidity nearly 100%, they’re largely unexplored. Researchers can only enter for short periods. Baatara (ba-ta-ra) Gorge Waterfall -- In northern Lebanon, you can find a very unique three-tiered waterfall where water crashing some 850 feet through cavernous gorges and circular rock formations … An actual triple waterfall! The water plummets into a cave formed out of Jurassic-era limestone called the Baatara Pothole. Inside the cliffs is a labyrinth of tunnels lit only by occasional patches of sunlight. The cave is also called the Cave of the Three Bridges due to the natural bridges that overhang a fissure that descends into Mount Lebanon. The waterfall and cavern is considered ‘one of the wonders of Lebanon’. We’re inclined to agree!
Balancing Act -- So this one might not be a recurring weird wonder in nature … at least we don’t think so. But it just looks so weird that we had to include it. Your eyes don’t deceive you … those are goats that actually climbed a 17-foot tree in Morocco. How did this come to be? Well, these animals seem to be accomplished at climbing trees … and they jump and claw their way up the branches searching for the tree’s olive-like berries … which the goats will go to any heights to reach. Of course, goats are known for their ability to scale steep, sheer surfaces … In fact some of their relatives, the Alpine ibex scaled the sheer side of Italy’s Cingino (chi-geeno) Dam in 2011 as they tried to feed on salt leaking from between the stones. It almost looks like they're floating on air, doesn’t it? Goats climbing sheer surfaces … okay, that seems to be a weird wonder of nature that happens regularly. But goats climbing trees … that seems pretty unique. What do you think?
Eye See You -- It almost looks like a Photoshop effort, but this is a natural phenomenon. Located on Sakhalin (sack-lin) Island in East Russia. From high above, you can make out the pupil in the center of the volcano, which is surrounded by a brown iris. Mud volcanoes are caused by a buildup of gases and liquids … with pressure built up, mud is released through fractures in the volcano’s structure, and that can create bizarre patterns … as you can see. Cano (khan-yo) Cristales -- It’s located in Colombia and is commonly called “The river of five colors”, or the Liquid Rainbow. Due to its striking colors, it’s often referred to as the world’s most beautiful river. You can detect green, yellow, blue, black and red in particular … but only during half the year … that’s because of a native aquatic plant called macarenia clavigera (mack-a-reenia clav-I-dra). The plant is what gives the river its distinctive colors, but it’s only active between June to December. The river is closed the rest of the year to give the local ecology a break. Skittles

Brooklyn Bridge

It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is a 77.1 kilometre ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres above sea level.
Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5 kilometre rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. At 37.9 kilometres the tunnel has the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world.

10. Malta -- 122 square miles (316 sq km) -Cracking our top 10 is the European island country of Malta. Marshall Islands -- 70 square miles (181 sq km) -So far our list was entirely consisted of island countries, and Marshall Islands isn't about to break this pattern, which is actually quite obvious just from the name itself. Located north of Australia in the Pacific Ocean, it's also the first country on our list to go below the 100 square miles mark.
6. Liechtenstein -- 62 square miles (160 sq km) -We've reached land at last, Europe to be precise. As the first continental country on our top 10, Liechtenstein is smallest yet richest German-speaking country. Located in Central Europe, it has a land mass of 62 square miles (160 sq km).
5. San Marino -- 24 square miles (61 sq km) -We're still in Europe, but we've gone a bit southbound, to northern Italy. Drastically smaller than all of the countries listed so far, San Marino gets very close to minuscule size of 20 square miles (50 sq km). It has an estimated population of 30,000 inhabiting the area of 24 square miles (61 sq km).
4. Tuvalu -- 10 square miles (26 sq km) -Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu marks our return to island countries. Located in the Pacific Ocean east of Australia, it takes up an area of approximately 10 square miles, and with a population of 10,000, Tuvalu has a quite dense population of over 1,000 inhabitants per square mile.
3. Nauru -- 8.1 square miles (21 sq km) -We've reached the end as far as island countries go. We are in Micronesia and we are looking at the smallest island country in the world, the tiny Nauru. Apart from cracking out top 3, it is also the first country to go below the 10 square miles area size. With a population of under 9,500, it is also the world's second least populated country.

East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
Etymology
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
Navigation
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
Cultural
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.

The Seven Wonders of the World (or the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) refers to remarkable constructions of classical antiquity listed by various authors in guidebooks popular among the ancient Hellenic tourists, particularly in the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. The most prominent of these, the versions by Antipater of Sidon and an observer identified as Philo of Byzantium, comprise seven works located around the eastern Mediterranean rim. The original list inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often listing seven entries. Of the original Seven Wonders, only one—the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the ancient wonders—remains relatively intact. Background In this painting by Maerten van Heemskerck, the seven wonders of the ancient world are depicted as a background for the abduction of Helen by Paris. The Walters Art Museum. The Greek conquest of much of the known world in the 4th century BC gave Hellenistic travellers access to the civilizations of the Egyptians, Persians, and Babylonians. Impressed and captivated by the landmarks and marvels of the various lands, these travellers began to list what they saw to remember them. Instead of "wonders", the ancient Greeks spoke of "theamata" (θεάματα), which means "sights", in other words "things to be seen". (Τὰ ἑπτὰ θεάματα τῆς οἰκουμένης [γῆς] Tà heptà theámata tēs oikoumenēs [gēs]) Later, the word for "wonder" ("thaumata" θαύματα) was used, and this is also the case in modern Greek (Επτά θαύματα του αρχαίου κόσμου). Hence, the list was meant to be the Ancient World's counterpart of a travel guidebook. Each person had his own version of the list, but the best known and earliest surviving was from a poem by Greek-speaking epigrammist Antipater of Sidon from around 140 BC. He named six of the seven sites on his list—leaving out the lighthouse—, but was primarily in praise of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus Another 2nd century BC observer, who claimed to be the mathematician Philo of Byzantium, wrote a short account entitled The Seven Sights of the World. However, the incomplete surviving manuscript only covered six of the supposedly seven places, which agreed with Antipater's list. Earlier and later lists by the historian Herodotus (484 BC--ca. 425 BC) and the architect Callimachus of Cyrene (ca. 305--240 BC), housed at the Museum of Alexandria, survived only as references. The Colossus of Rhodes was the last of the seven to be completed, after 280 BC, and the first to be destroyed, by an earthquake in 226/225 BC. Hence, all seven existed at the same time for a period of less than 60 years. Antipater had an earlier version which replaced Lighthouse of Alexandria with the Walls of Babylon. Lists which preceded the construction of Colossus of Rhodes completed their seven entries with the inclusion of the Ishtar Gate. Scope It is thought that the limitation of the lists to seven entries was attributed to the special magical meaning of the number. Geographically, the list covered only the sculptural and architectural monuments of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, which then comprised the known world for the Greeks. Hence, extant sites beyond this realm were not considered as part of contemporary accounts. The primary accounts, coming from Hellenistic writers, also heavily influenced the places included in the wonders list. Five of the seven entries are a celebration of Greek accomplishments in the arts and architecture (the exceptions being the Pyramids of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon). -

Currently the islands erode at an approximate rate of 40 inches a year. And remember that wall of ice? According to experts that will completely melt within the next 75 years. This will fully expose the islands to the elements and once that happens they won’t be around for very long. 4. Madagascar This island is the fourth largest in the world and the 46th largest country and lies east of the southeast coast of Africa. Madagascar is host to some very unique tropical rainforests and diverse wildlife, including lemurs and mongoose. The destruction of this island is very much man made. Poaching, logging and burning have destroyed the ecosystem and if action isn’t taken it is estimated that those rainforests and wildlife will vanish within 35 years. It is also a simple problem of too many humans on the island to share space. The population of Madagascar is estimated to be just under 23 million, which is slightly less than the population of Australia. 3. Venice Without intervention it is estimated that Venice will be totally gone by 2100, if not earlier. The problem with Venice is that it lies at sea level and sea levels are rising. This beautiful coastal Italian city is a must see for anyone interested in religion, art, architecture, or just looking for a really nice place to visit. Floods have already put most of the city underwater several times. St. Mark’s square, the principal public square of Venice, actually floods on a yearly basis. The city was founded in 421 A.D. and is one of the most picturesque cities in the world full of a rich history and culture. This destination should be on everyone’s bucket list. 2. Glacier National Park Located in Montana, this national park established in 1910 was once home to more than 150 glaciers. That number has shrunk to fewer than 25 and those will probably be gone by the year 2030 or sooner. Without the cold water provided by these glaciers the ecosystem of the park will surely be affected dramatically after they are gone. The 1,583 square mile park is teeming with all different kinds of life; it boasts 260 species of birds, 1,132 plant species and 62 species of mammals. It also has more than 700 miles of hiking trails. You would be hard pressed to find a better place to go backpacking and camping. The sooner you go the better because who knows what kind of affect the disappearing glaciers will have on this park’s incredible ecosystem and breathtaking beauty. 1. The European Alps Glaciers are disappearing from the Alps at an alarming rate and global warming is the culprit. Experts estimate that they will be totally gone sometime between 2030 and 2050. About 3 percent of the glacial ice is lost per year, but a whopping 10 percent was lost in the record setting heat of 2003. They are a worldwide tourist destination and are visited by over 120 million people annually. Olympic games have been hosted there, and the region has a strong cultural identity seeped in history. Hannibal led a herd of elephants across the Alps and Napoleon crossed one of its mountain passes with 40,000 soldiers. The mountain range spans 750 miles across Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia and Switzerland. From the bizarre sailing stones in Death Valley Park, to the unbelievable mud volcano found in Sakhalin, Russia. These are 12 WEIRD Wonders of Nature ! Sailing Stones -- Here’s a phenomenon that has occurred in various locations around the world … but most notably at Racetrack Playa in California’s Death Valley National Park. Huge rocks, some weighing up to 700 pounds, seem to move all by themselves, with no apparent intervention from humans or animals … often leaving trails over 300 feet long. Some trails were curved, while others travel in a straight line, then abruptly shift to the right or left. What’s behind the mystery? Some theories suggest the big stones move as a result of water and ice forming in Death Valley under certain winter conditions. A breeze could then “float” the rocks across the muddy bottom of the valley floor … leaving trails in the mud as the stones moved. Research conducted in 2015 suggested that sailing stones found in Spain’s Manchego (man-chay-go) Lagoon moved as a result of microbacteria living on the lagoon floor. The microorganisms created slippery conditions allowing the stones to move during the rainy season when wind and water currents were at their strongest. No theory has been been definitively proven. Cave of the Crystals -- it’s located almost 1,000 feet below the surface in Naica (nigh-ka), Chihuahua Mexico … and is known to hold some of the largest natural crystals ever found. While they look icy, the massive crystals are forged in temperatures up 122 degrees Fahrenheit … and were developed over 500,000 years in mineral rich water … and they can measure up to 4 feet wide and 50 feet long! These hidden caves were drained over 40 years ago, but the crystals made of gypsum were unearthed by miners in 2000. Because temperatures in the caves can reach 136 degrees, and humidity nearly 100%, they’re largely unexplored. Researchers can only enter for short periods. In order to preserve the crystals there are plans to re-flood the cave Baatara (ba-ta-ra) Gorge Waterfall -- In northern Lebanon, you can find a very unique three-tiered waterfall where water crashing some 850 feet through cavernous gorges and circular rock formations … An actual triple waterfall! The water plummets into a cave formed out of Jurassic-era limestone called the Baatara Pothole. Inside the cliffs is a labyrinth of tunnels lit only by occasional patches of sunlight. The cave is also called the Cave of the Three Bridges due to the natural bridges that overhang a fissure that descends into Mount Lebanon. The waterfall and cavern is considered ‘one of the wonders of Lebanon’. We’re inclined to agree! Balancing Act -- So this one might not be a recurring weird wonder in nature … at least we don’t think so. But it just looks so weird that we had to include it. Your eyes don’t deceive you … those are goats that actually climbed a 17-foot tree in Morocco. How did this come to be? Well, these animals seem to be accomplished at climbing trees … and they jump and claw their way up the branches searching for the tree’s olive-like berries … which the goats will go to any heights to reach. Of course, goats are known for their ability to scale steep, sheer surfaces … In fact some of their relatives, the Alpine ibex scaled the sheer side of Italy’s Cingino (chi-geeno) Dam in 2011 as they tried to feed on salt leaking from between the stones. It almost looks like they're floating on air, doesn’t it? Goats climbing sheer surfaces … okay, that seems to be a weird wonder of nature that happens regularly. But goats climbing trees … that seems pretty unique. What do you think? Eye See You -- It almost looks like a Photoshop effort, but this is a natural phenomenon. Located on Sakhalin (sack-lin) Island in East Russia. From high above, you can make out the pupil in the center of the volcano, which is surrounded by a brown iris. Mud volcanoes are caused by a buildup of gases and liquids … with pressure built up, mud is released through fractures in the volcano’s structure, and that can create bizarre patterns … as you can see. Did it make you blink? Cano (khan-yo) Cristales -- It’s located in Colombia and is commonly called “The river of five colors”, or the Liquid Rainbow. Due to its striking colors, it’s often referred to as the world’s most beautiful river. You can detect green, yellow, blue, black and red in particular … but only during half the year … that’s because of a native aquatic plant called macarenia clavigera (mack-a-reenia clav-I-dra). The plant is what gives the river its distinctive colors, but it’s only active between June to December. The river is closed the rest of the year to give the local ecology a break. The original list inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often listing seven entries. Of the original Seven Wonders, only one—the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the ancient wonders—remains relatively intact.

The Greek conquest of much of the known world in the 4th century BC gave Hellenistic travellers access to the civilizations of the Egyptians, Persians, and Babylonians. Impressed and captivated by the landmarks and marvels of the various lands, these travellers began to list what they saw to remember them.
Instead of "wonders", the ancient Greeks spoke of "theamata" (θεάματα), which means "sights", in other words "things to be seen". (Τὰ ἑπτὰ θεάματα τῆς οἰκουμένης [γῆς] Tà heptà theámata tēs oikoumenēs [gēs]) Later, the word for "wonder" ("thaumata" θαύματα) was used, and this is also the case in modern Greek (Επτά θαύματα του αρχαίου κόσμου). Hence, the list was meant to be the Ancient World's counterpart of a travel guidebook.
Each person had his own version of the list, but the best known and earliest surviving was from a poem by Greek-speaking epigrammist Antipater of Sidon from around 140 BC. He named six of the seven sites on his list—leaving out the lighthouse—, but was primarily in praise of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Another 2nd century BC observer, who claimed to be the mathematician Philo of Byzantium, wrote a short account entitled The Seven Sights of the World. However, the incomplete surviving manuscript only covered six of the supposedly seven places, which agreed with Antipater's list.
Earlier and later lists by the historian Herodotus (484 BC--ca. 425 BC) and the architect Callimachus of Cyrene (ca. 305--240 BC), housed at the Museum of Alexandria, survived only as references.
The Colossus of Rhodes was the last of the seven to be completed, after 280 BC, and the first to be destroyed, by an earthquake in 226/225 BC. Hence, all seven existed at the same time for a period of less than 60 years. Antipater had an earlier version which replaced Lighthouse of Alexandria with the Walls of Babylon. Lists which preceded the construction of Colossus of Rhodes completed their seven entries with the inclusion of the Ishtar Gate.
Scope
It is thought that the limitation of the lists to seven entries was attributed to the special magical meaning of the number. Geographically, the list covered only the sculptural and architectural monuments of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, which then comprised the known world for the Greeks. Hence, extant sites beyond this realm were not considered as part of contemporary accounts.

It is believed that in the next 50 to 100 years the entire archipelago could be submerged. It is best known for its white sand beaches, nature reserves and rare wildlife.

Located in Quebec, Canada these islands are picturesque and a perfect vacation spot. They are filled with sandy beaches and amazing sandstone cliffs. Though there are heavy winds in the area, there is a wall of sea ice blocking and protecting the islands from the worst of it. And this is what will make this beautiful part of the world disappear. Currently the islands erode at an approximate rate of 40 inches a year. And remember that wall of ice? According to experts that will completely melt within the next 75 years. This will fully expose the islands to the elements and once that happens they won’t be around for very long.

This island is the fourth largest in the world and the 46th largest country and lies east of the southeast coast of Africa. Madagascar is host to some very unique tropical rainforests and diverse wildlife, including lemurs and mongoose. The destruction of this island is very much man made. Poaching, logging and burning have destroyed the ecosystem and if action isn’t taken it is estimated that those rainforests and wildlife will vanish within 35 years. It is also a simple problem of too many humans on the island to share space. The population of Madagascar is estimated to be just under 23 million, which is slightly less than the population of Australia.

Without intervention it is estimated that Venice will be totally gone by 2100, if not earlier. The problem with Venice is that it lies at sea level and sea levels are rising. This beautiful coastal Italian city is a must see for anyone interested in religion, art, architecture, or just looking for a really nice place to visit. Floods have already put most of the city underwater several times. St. Mark’s square, the principal public square of Venice, actually floods on a yearly basis. The city was founded in 421 A.D. and is one of the most picturesque cities in the world full of a rich history and culture. This destination should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Located in Montana, this national park established in 1910 was once home to more than 150 glaciers. That number has shrunk to fewer than 25 and those will probably be gone by the year 2030 or sooner. Without the cold water provided by these glaciers the ecosystem of the park will surely be affected dramatically after they are gone. The 1,583 square mile park is teeming with all different kinds of life; it boasts 260 species of birds, 1,132 plant species and 62 species of mammals. It also has more than 700 miles of hiking trails. You would be hard pressed to find a better place to go backpacking and camping. The sooner you go the better because who knows what kind of affect the disappearing glaciers will have on this park’s incredible ecosystem and breathtaking beauty.

Some theories suggest the big stones move as a result of water and ice forming in Death Valley under certain winter conditions. A breeze could then “float” the rocks across the muddy bottom of the valley floor … leaving trails in the mud as the stones moved. Research conducted in 2015 suggested that sailing stones found in Spain’s Manchego (man-chay-go) Lagoon moved as a result of microbacteria living on the lagoon floor. The microorganisms created slippery conditions allowing the stones to move during the rainy season when wind and water currents were at their strongest. No theory has been been definitively proven.
Cave of the Crystals -- it’s located almost 1,000 feet below the surface in Naica (nigh-ka), Chihuahua Mexico … and is known to hold some of the largest natural crystals ever found. While they look icy, the massive crystals are forged in temperatures up 122 degrees Fahrenheit … and were developed over 500,000 years in mineral rich water … and they can measure up to 4 feet wide and 50 feet long! These hidden caves were drained over 40 years ago, but the crystals made of gypsum were unearthed by miners in 2000. Because temperatures in the caves can reach 136 degrees, and humidity nearly 100%, they’re largely unexplored. Researchers can only enter for short periods. Baatara (ba-ta-ra) Gorge Waterfall -- In northern Lebanon, you can find a very unique three-tiered waterfall where water crashing some 850 feet through cavernous gorges and circular rock formations … An actual triple waterfall! The water plummets into a cave formed out of Jurassic-era limestone called the Baatara Pothole. Inside the cliffs is a labyrinth of tunnels lit only by occasional patches of sunlight. The cave is also called the Cave of the Three Bridges due to the natural bridges that overhang a fissure that descends into Mount Lebanon. The waterfall and cavern is considered ‘one of the wonders of Lebanon’. We’re inclined to agree!
Balancing Act -- So this one might not be a recurring weird wonder in nature … at least we don’t think so. But it just looks so weird that we had to include it. Your eyes don’t deceive you … those are goats that actually climbed a 17-foot tree in Morocco. How did this come to be? Well, these animals seem to be accomplished at climbing trees … and they jump and claw their way up the branches searching for the tree’s olive-like berries … which the goats will go to any heights to reach. Of course, goats are known for their ability to scale steep, sheer surfaces … In fact some of their relatives, the Alpine ibex scaled the sheer side of Italy’s Cingino (chi-geeno) Dam in 2011 as they tried to feed on salt leaking from between the stones. It almost looks like they're floating on air, doesn’t it? Goats climbing sheer surfaces … okay, that seems to be a weird wonder of nature that happens regularly. But goats climbing trees … that seems pretty unique. What do you think?
Eye See You -- It almost looks like a Photoshop effort, but this is a natural phenomenon. Located on Sakhalin (sack-lin) Island in East Russia. From high above, you can make out the pupil in the center of the volcano, which is surrounded by a brown iris. Mud volcanoes are caused by a buildup of gases and liquids … with pressure built up, mud is released through fractures in the volcano’s structure, and that can create bizarre patterns … as you can see. Did it make you blink?
Cano (khan-yo) Cristales -- It’s located in Colombia and is commonly called “The river of five colors”, or the Liquid Rainbow. Due to its striking colors, it’s often referred to as the world’s most beautiful river. You can detect green, yellow, blue, black and red in particular … but only during half the year … that’s because of a native aquatic plant called macarenia clavigera (mack-a-reenia clav-I-dra). The plant is what gives the river its distinctive colors, but it’s only active between June to December. The river is closed the rest of the year to give the local ecology a break. Skittles

Sailing Stones -- Here’s a phenomenon that has occurred in various locations around the world … but most notably at Racetrack Playa in California’s Death Valley National Park. Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is a bridge in New York City and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Completed in 1883, it connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. It has a main span of 486.3 metres and was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed.
Petronas Towers
The Petronas Towers, also known as the Petronas Twin Towers are twin skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat official definition and ranking, they were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004. The buildings are a landmark of Kuala Lumpur, along with nearby Kuala Lumpur Tower.
Concorde
Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde is a retired turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner or supersonic transport. Concorde was jointly developed and produced by Aérospatiale and the British Aircraft Corporation under an Anglo-French treaty. First flown in 1969, Concorde entered service in 1976 and continued commercial flights for 27 years.
Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. It was named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889, it was initially criticised by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world.
Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is a 77.1 kilometre ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres above sea level.
Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5 kilometre rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. At 37.9 kilometres the tunnel has the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world.

Drastically smaller than all of the countries listed so far, San Marino gets very close to minuscule size of 20 square miles (50 sq km). It has an estimated population of 30,000 inhabiting the area of 24 square miles (61 sq km).

The original list inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often listing seven entries. Of the original Seven Wonders, only one—the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the ancient wonders—remains relatively intact.

The Greek conquest of much of the known world in the 4th century BC gave Hellenistic travellers access to the civilizations of the Egyptians, Persians, and Babylonians. Impressed and captivated by the landmarks and marvels of the various lands, these travellers began to list what they saw to remember them.
Instead of "wonders", the ancient Greeks spoke of "theamata" (θεάματα), which means "sights", in other words "things to be seen". (Τὰ ἑπτὰ θεάματα τῆς οἰκουμένης [γῆς] Tà heptà theámata tēs oikoumenēs [gēs]) Later, the word for "wonder" ("thaumata" θαύματα) was used, and this is also the case in modern Greek (Επτά θαύματα του αρχαίου κόσμου). Hence, the list was meant to be the Ancient World's counterpart of a travel guidebook.
Each person had his own version of the list, but the best known and earliest surviving was from a poem by Greek-speaking epigrammist Antipater of Sidon from around 140 BC. He named six of the seven sites on his list—leaving out the lighthouse—, but was primarily in praise of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Another 2nd century BC observer, who claimed to be the mathematician Philo of Byzantium, wrote a short account entitled The Seven Sights of the World. However, the incomplete surviving manuscript only covered six of the supposedly seven places, which agreed with Antipater's list.
Earlier and later lists by the historian Herodotus (484 BC--ca. 425 BC) and the architect Callimachus of Cyrene (ca. 305--240 BC), housed at the Museum of Alexandria, survived only as references.
The Colossus of Rhodes was the last of the seven to be completed, after 280 BC, and the first to be destroyed, by an earthquake in 226/225 BC. Hence, all seven existed at the same time for a period of less than 60 years. Antipater had an earlier version which replaced Lighthouse of Alexandria with the Walls of Babylon. Lists which preceded the construction of Colossus of Rhodes completed their seven entries with the inclusion of the Ishtar Gate.
Scope
It is thought that the limitation of the lists to seven entries was attributed to the special magical meaning of the number. Geographically, the list covered only the sculptural and architectural monuments of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, which then comprised the known world for the Greeks. Hence, extant sites beyond this realm were not considered as part of contemporary accounts.
The primary accounts, coming from Hellenistic writers, also heavily influenced the places included in the wonders list. Five of the seven entries are a celebration of Greek accomplishments in the arts and architecture (the exceptions being the Pyramids of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon).

6. Seychelles
This collection of 115 islands is your stereotypical tropical paradise and is home to numerous luxury resorts and a population of roughly 90,000. The islands are located in the Indian Ocean east of Africa. Like so many other islands, they are in danger due to beach erosion and devastating coral die off. It is believed that in the next 50 to 100 years the entire archipelago could be submerged. It is best known for its white sand beaches, nature reserves and rare wildlife.
5. Magdalen Islands
Located in Quebec, Canada these islands are picturesque and a perfect vacation spot. They are filled with sandy beaches and amazing sandstone cliffs. Though there are heavy winds in the area, there is a wall of sea ice blocking and protecting the islands from the worst of it. And this is what will make this beautiful part of the world disappear. Currently the islands erode at an approximate rate of 40 inches a year. And remember that wall of ice? According to experts that will completely melt within the next 75 years. This will fully expose the islands to the elements and once that happens they won’t be around for very long.
4. Madagascar
This island is the fourth largest in the world and the 46th largest country and lies east of the southeast coast of Africa. Madagascar is host to some very unique tropical rainforests and diverse wildlife, including lemurs and mongoose. The destruction of this island is very much man made. Poaching, logging and burning have destroyed the ecosystem and if action isn’t taken it is estimated that those rainforests and wildlife will vanish within 35 years. It is also a simple problem of too many humans on the island to share space. The population of Madagascar is estimated to be just under 23 million, which is slightly less than the population of Australia.

Without intervention it is estimated that Venice will be totally gone by 2100, if not earlier. The problem with Venice is that it lies at sea level and sea levels are rising. This beautiful coastal Italian city is a must see for anyone interested in religion, art, architecture, or just looking for a really nice place to visit. Floods have already put most of the city underwater several times. St. Mark’s square, the principal public square of Venice, actually floods on a yearly basis. The 1,583 square mile park is teeming with all different kinds of life; it boasts 260 species of birds, 1,132 plant species and 62 species of mammals. It also has more than 700 miles of hiking trails. You would be hard pressed to find a better place to go backpacking and camping. The sooner you go the better because who knows what kind of affect the disappearing glaciers will have on this park’s incredible ecosystem and breathtaking beauty.

7. The Great Barrier Reef
Australia’s popular underwater destination is in peril. Bleaching caused by climate change has killed roughly a quarter of it coral and the reef, which took approximately 8,000 years to form, could be completely gone within the span of a lifetime. The reef is an incredible sight that covers an area of 134,286 miles and is the only living thing on earth visible from space. It is also considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Whether you go to scuba dive, take a helicopter tour, or whale watch you have to check out this awe inspiring natural wonder.
6. Seychelles
This collection of 115 islands is your stereotypical tropical paradise and is home to numerous luxury resorts and a population of roughly 90,000. The islands are located in the Indian Ocean east of Africa. Like so many other islands, they are in danger due to beach erosion and devastating coral die off. It is believed that in the next 50 to 100 years the entire archipelago could be submerged. It is best known for its white sand beaches, nature reserves and rare wildlife.
5. Magdalen Islands
Located in Quebec, Canada these islands are picturesque and a perfect vacation spot. They are filled with sandy beaches and amazing sandstone cliffs. Though there are heavy winds in the area, there is a wall of sea ice blocking and protecting the islands from the worst of it. And this is what will make this beautiful part of the world disappear. Currently the islands erode at an approximate rate of 40 inches a year. And remember that wall of ice? According to experts that will completely melt within the next 75 years. This will fully expose the islands to the elements and once that happens they won’t be around for very long.
4. Madagascar
This island is the fourth largest in the world and the 46th largest country and lies east of the southeast coast of Africa. Madagascar is host to some very unique tropical rainforests and diverse wildlife, including lemurs and mongoose. The destruction of this island is very much man made. Poaching, logging and burning have destroyed the ecosystem and if action isn’t taken it is estimated that those rainforests and wildlife will vanish within 35 years. It is also a simple problem of too many humans on the island to share space. The population of Madagascar is estimated to be just under 23 million, which is slightly less than the population of Australia.

Without intervention it is estimated that Venice will be totally gone by 2100, if not earlier. The problem with Venice is that it lies at sea level and sea levels are rising. This beautiful coastal Italian city is a must see for anyone interested in religion, art, architecture, or just looking for a really nice place to visit. Floods have already put most of the city underwater several times. St. Mark’s square, the principal public square of Venice, actually floods on a yearly basis. Sailing Stones -- Here’s a phenomenon that has occurred in various locations around the world … but most notably at Racetrack Playa in California’s Death Valley National Park. Huge rocks, some weighing up to 700 pounds, seem to move all by themselves, with no apparent intervention from humans or animals … often leaving trails over 300 feet long. Some trails were curved, while others travel in a straight line, then abruptly shift to the right or left. What’s behind the mystery? Some theories suggest the big stones move as a result of water and ice forming in Death Valley under certain winter conditions. A breeze could then “float” the rocks across the muddy bottom of the valley floor … leaving trails in the mud as the stones moved. Research conducted in 2015 suggested that sailing stones found in Spain’s Manchego (man-chay-go) Lagoon moved as a result of microbacteria living on the lagoon floor. The microorganisms created slippery conditions allowing the stones to move during the rainy season when wind and water currents were at their strongest. No theory has been been definitively proven.
Cave of the Crystals -- it’s located almost 1,000 feet below the surface in Naica (nigh-ka), Chihuahua Mexico … and is known to hold some of the largest natural crystals ever found. While they look icy, the massive crystals are forged in temperatures up 122 degrees Fahrenheit … and were developed over 500,000 years in mineral rich water … and they can measure up to 4 feet wide and 50 feet long! These hidden caves were drained over 40 years ago, but the crystals made of gypsum were unearthed by miners in 2000. Because temperatures in the caves can reach 136 degrees, and humidity nearly 100%, they’re largely unexplored. Researchers can only enter for short periods. In order to preserve the crystals there are plans to re-flood the cave
Baatara (ba-ta-ra) Gorge Waterfall -- In northern Lebanon, you can find a very unique three-tiered waterfall where water crashing some 850 feet through cavernous gorges and circular rock formations … An actual triple waterfall! The water plummets into a cave formed out of Jurassic-era limestone called the Baatara Pothole. Inside the cliffs is a labyrinth of tunnels lit only by occasional patches of sunlight. The cave is also called the Cave of the Three Bridges due to the natural bridges that overhang a fissure that descends into Mount Lebanon. The waterfall and cavern is considered ‘one of the wonders of Lebanon’. We’re inclined to agree!
Balancing Act -- So this one might not be a recurring weird wonder in nature … at least we don’t think so. But it just looks so weird that we had to include it. Your eyes don’t deceive you … those are goats that actually climbed a 17-foot tree in Morocco. How did this come to be? Well, these animals seem to be accomplished at climbing trees … and they jump and claw their way up the branches searching for the tree’s olive-like berries … which the goats will go to any heights to reach. Of course, goats are known for their ability to scale steep, sheer surfaces … In fact some of their relatives, the Alpine ibex scaled the sheer side of Italy’s Cingino (chi-geeno) Dam in 2011 as they tried to feed on salt leaking from between the stones. It almost looks like they're floating on air, doesn’t it? Goats climbing sheer surfaces … okay, that seems to be a weird wonder of nature that happens regularly. But goats climbing trees … that seems pretty unique. What do you think?
Eye See You -- It almost looks like a Photoshop effort, but this is a natural phenomenon. Located on Sakhalin (sack-lin) Island in East Russia. From high above, you can make out the pupil in the center of the volcano, which is surrounded by a brown iris. Mud volcanoes are caused by a buildup of gases and liquids … with pressure built up, mud is released through fractures in the volcano’s structure, and that can create bizarre patterns … as you can see. Did it make you blink?
Cano (khan-yo) Cristales -- It’s located in Colombia and is commonly called “The river of five colors”, or the Liquid Rainbow. Due to its striking colors, it’s often referred to as the world’s most beautiful river. You can detect green, yellow, blue, black and red in particular … but only during half the year … that’s because of a native aquatic plant called macarenia clavigera (mack-a-reenia clav-I-dra). The plant is what gives the river its distinctive colors, but it’s only active between June to December. The river is closed the rest of the year to give the local ecology a break. Skittles

Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is a bridge in New York City and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is a 77.1 kilometre ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres above sea level.
Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5 kilometre rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. At 37.9 kilometres the tunnel has the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world.

Concorde
Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde is a retired turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner or supersonic transport. Concorde was jointly developed and produced by Aérospatiale and the British Aircraft Corporation under an Anglo-French treaty. First flown in 1969, Concorde entered service in 1976 and continued commercial flights for 27 years.
Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. It was named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is a 77.1 kilometre ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres above sea level.
Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5 kilometre rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. At 37.9 kilometres the tunnel has the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world.
