The Brian Desmond Hurst Estate in conjunction with The North Down Museum presented an eight week exhibition on Hurst in June/July 2014 entitled Holywood Arches to Hollywood. The exhibition included several short films on Hurst and this piece focused on his very last film The Playboy of the Western World (1962).
On 26 January 1942 the first of 300,000 US Troops arrived in Northern Ireland. Brian Desmond Hurst was on hand in the early days to direct this documentary and was assisted by William MacQuitty (later Producer of A Night to Remember) and Terence Young (later Director of Dr No, From Russia With Love and Thunderball) so, all in all, quite a team!
Our film was screened at The Queens Film Theatre in April 2012 as part of the MacQuitty/Titanic anniversary events and at Aspects Festival in 2011. It includes 'then' and 'now' locations including Carrickfergus, Strabane, Tynan Abbey, Bellarena, Cultra, and Derry/Londonderry. Most of the servicemen we see on the original film are from the US 34th 'Red Bull' Infantry Division and includes the 151st Field Artillery.

Riders to the Sea (1935) Re-Mastered
Re-mastered and re-released to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the film’s release and the 120th anniversary of the birth of the film’s director on 12th February 1895, Belfast born, Gallipoli veteran Brian Desmond Hurst.
In this story of Western Ireland, the most famous work of Ireland’s greatest dramatist JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE is brought to the screen by Ulster’s greatest film director BRIAN DESMOND HURST.
It tells of a deeply religious people who speak English with all the poetry and strange turn of phrase f their Irish mother tongue. The women still keep the custom of ‘keening’ lamenting their dead.
When the story opens, Maurya (Sara Allgood), the mother, has lost to the sea her father, husband and two sons. Now only two sons are left for her, Michael (Denis Johnston credits note as Denis Johnstone) and Bartley (Kevin Guthrie). The appearance of Synge’s bereaved fiancée Maire O’Neill as ‘first woman’ is most poignant (born as Mary Allgood and known as Molly and appearing alongside her sister Sara. Note the film credits show her as Maire O’Neill). Actor and film critic Patrick Kirwan plays the Donegal Priest and a host of Abbey players provide much of the cast. Gracie Fields helped Hurst finance the film and artist John Patrick Flanagan co-produced the film and provided the art direction. Location shots were at Renvyle, Connemara, Co Galway, Ireland.

One of the greatest and most unique films of the Second World War "Theirs is the Glory" was made by 200 veterans of the battle in 1945. No easy task as during breaks in filming the men helped identify the field graves of their fallen comrades as the 'set' was the actual battle location from just a year earlier. The film premiered on 17th September 1946 with Prime Minister Clement Attlee attending and the King also commanding a private screening at Balmoral. Supported by the valiant civilians of Oosterbeek and Arnhem the veterans produced a film that became the biggest grossing war film in the UK for nearly a decade. Directed by Ulsterman Brian Desmond Hurst, a veteran of the first world war who had been mentored by John Ford in Hollywood, it was Hurst's favorite film. Rarely shown today perhaps because the unknowing do not appreciate who we see on screen and why they made this film? This short piece has been supporting 70th battle anniversary screenings in 2014.

Northern Ireland's greatest film director, Brian Desmond Hurst, knew a thing or two about film making and soldiering. He was the natural choice to travel to Belfast to make a film about the US troops arriving in Northern Ireland and training for the war in Europe that lay ahead. Over 300,000 US troops trained in Northern Ireland and 'A Letter From Ulster' is a classic in Northern Ireland's film legacy and has stood the test of time. A Letter From Ulster was screened nightly across the USA in 1942 and Hurst received a commendation from the President of the United States.
The production quality is evident given the team which Hurst assembled including protege Terence Young (subsequent Bond director) and William MacQuitty (Producer of a Night To Remember).
It has been remastered and is being released on 9 August 2015 to commemorate the cruel slaughter of Brian's comrades at their Battle of Chunuk Bair in Gallipoli. The tragedy of this service battalion lies in the brutality of the numbers. 100 years ago today above Anzac cove on 9 August 1915 the roll call of Brian's battalion recorded 778 men. Three days later the roll call identified 368 were dead or wounded in fighting at its most brutal which included a bayonet charge at an isolated location near an area called 'the Farm'. Nearby regiments such as the Sandringham Pals are well remembered for their actions and losses. The men from Belfast, Dublin and surrounding areas were air-brushed from history except for brief comments such as Punch's interview with Hurst in 1969 "Catholic-Protestant antagonism vanished in this holocaust". This is Hurst's message to America and lets the 'moms' and dads, brothers and sisters know that their 'boys' were fine and being looked after in Ulster. As the film progresses and Hurst lingers on the faces of the young men, and especially in the church service filmed in St. Mays in Belfast, the Hurst 'signature' close ups can be seen to underline a point. Because Hurst knew what lay ahead.

Brian Desmond Hurst
Brian Desmond Hurst (12 February 1895 – 26 September 1986) was a Belfast-born film director. With over 30 films in his filmography, Hurst was Ireland's most prolific film director during the 20th century. He is perhaps best known for Scrooge (released abroad in the United States as A Christmas Carol), a film that frequently tops lists of classic Christmas movies.
Early life
Hurst was born Hans Hurst at 23, Ribble Street, Belfast into a working-class family. Hurst attended the New Road School, a public elementary school, on the junction of the Newtownards Road and Hemp Street in East Belfast.
Brian Desmond Hurst's father (Robert, senior) and brother (Robert, junior) were iron-workers in the Harland and Wolff shipyard. In August 1914, at the outbreak of World War I, Hurst enlisted as a private in the British Army and changed his name from Hans to Brian soon afterwards. He saw service with the 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles at the battle of Chunuk Bair in Gallipoli, the Balkans and the Middle East. At the battle of Chunuk Bair his regiment were "battle virgins when they were thrown into the Turkish machine gun fire for the first time on 10 August 1915". "They had set out a few hours before for the Chunuk Bair with twenty officers and over 700 men. Several stragglers and those who had lost their way returned to base in the hours that lay ahead but by the evening of 10 August the Hampshires and the Rifles had been broken in what amounted to a cruel massacre".

One of the greatest and most unique films of the Second World War "Theirs is the Glory" was made by 200 veterans of the battle in 1945. No easy task as during breaks in filming the men helped identify the field graves of their fallen comrades as the 'set' was the actual battle location from just a year earlier. The film premiered on 17th September 1946 with Prime Minister Clement Attlee attending and the King also commanding a private screening at Balmoral. Supported by the valiant civilians of Oosterbeek and Arnhem the veterans produced a film that became the biggest grossing war film in the UK for nearly a decade. In this story of Western Ireland, the most famous work of Ireland’s greatest dramatist JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE is brought to the screen by Ulster’s greatest film director BRIAN DESMOND HURST.

Now only two sons are left for her, Michael (Denis Johnston credits note as Denis Johnstone) and Bartley (Kevin Guthrie). The appearance of Synge’s bereaved fiancée Maire O’Neill as ‘first woman’ is most poignant (born as Mary Allgood and known as Molly and appearing alongside her sister Sara. Note the film credits show her as Maire O’Neill). Actor and film critic Patrick Kirwan plays the Donegal Priest and a host of Abbey players provide much of the cast. Gracie Fields helped Hurst finance the film and artist John Patrick Flanagan co-produced the film and provided the art direction. Location shots were at Renvyle, Connemara, Co Galway, Ireland.

It has been remastered and is being released on 9 August 2015 to commemorate the cruel slaughter of Brian's comrades at their Battle of Chunuk Bair in Gallipoli. The tragedy of this service battalion lies in the brutality of the numbers. 100 years ago today above Anzac cove on 9 August 1915 the roll call of Brian's battalion recorded 778 men. Three days later the roll call identified 368 were dead or wounded in fighting at its most brutal which included a bayonet charge at an isolated location near an area called 'the Farm'. Nearby regiments such as the Sandringham Pals are well remembered for their actions and losses. The men from Belfast, Dublin and surrounding areas were air-brushed from history except for brief comments such as Punch's interview with Hurst in 1969 "Catholic-Protestant antagonism vanished in this holocaust". A memorial to Brian's comrades now features at http://www.briandesmondhurst.org/biographywaryears.html
This is Hurst's message to America and lets the 'moms' and dads, brothers and sisters know that their 'boys' were fine and being looked after in Ulster. The film also features Kathleen Harrison in an acclaimed turn as Mrs. Dilber, Scrooge's charwoman. George Cole stars as the younger version of Scrooge, Hermione Baddeley as Mrs. Cratchit, Mervyn Johns as Bob Cratchit, Clifford Mollison as Samuel Wilkins, a debtor, Jack Warner as Mr. Jorkin, a role created for the film, Ernest Thesiger as Marley's undertaker and Patrick Macnee as young Jacob Marley. Michael Hordern plays Marley's ghost, as well as old Marley. Peter Bull serves as narrator, by reading portions of Dickens' words at the beginning and end of the film; he also appears on-screen as one of the businessmen cynically discussing Scrooge's funeral.
Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim) is seen leaving the London Exchange on his way to his counting house on Christmas Eve, 1843. Scrooge tells two other men of business that he has no intention of celebrating Christmas. He refuses leniency to a debtor who owes Scrooge money. Back at his place of business, Scrooge refuses a donation to two men collecting for the poor, suggesting that prisons and workhouses are sufficient for maintaining the poor, and that those who won't go would be better off dead. Scrooge's nephew, Fred (Brian Worth), invites Scrooge to dinner the next day, but Scrooge refuses, disparaging Fred for having married. Scrooge reluctantly gives his poor clerk Bob Cratchit (Mervyn Johns) the day off with pay, but expects him back all the earlier the day after.
After Scrooge dines alone in a seedy restaurant (where he refuses more bread when told he has to pay a halfpenny more for it), he goes home for the night. Scrooge sees the door-knocker turn into the face of his seven-years-dead partner, Jacob Marley (Michael Hordern). Scrooge's supper of gruel is interrupted by the ringing of bells before Marley appears as a ghost. Scrooge believes he is hallucinating until Marley howls in anguish and frustration. Marley warns Scrooge that he must repent or suffer Marley's unbearable fate: condemned to walk the earth forever, bound in the chains he "forged in life" by his greedy ways. He warns Scrooge that he will be visited by three spirits; the first will arrive when the bell tolls one. Marley leaves to join other ghosts suffering the same torment. Frightened by the sight of the damned, Scrooge takes refuge in his bed.
At one in the morning, the Ghost of Christmas Past (Michael Dolan) arrives to show Scrooge scenes from his past. A young Scrooge (George Cole) is alone at school, unwanted by his father. His sister Fan (Carol Marsh) arrives to take him home, claiming their father has changed. Next, the Ghost shows Scrooge the annual Christmas party thrown by his fondly remembered employer, old Fezziwig (Roddy Hughes). Scrooge witnesses his proposal to his girlfriend, Alice (Rona Anderson). He is reminded that the lure of money from the sarcastic Mr. Jorkin (Jack Warner) seduced him to abandon his loyalty to Fezziwig. Scrooge relives the death of Fan; as she lay dying, he angrily walked away and refused to look after her son, Fred. The older Scrooge is overcome, and begs for her forgiveness. In partnership with Jorkin, young Scrooge befriends a young Jacob Marley (Patrick Macnee). Scrooge and Marley buy out Fezziwig's business and turn his warehouse into a counting house. Alice breaks off her engagement to Scrooge, feeling that love of money has replaced his love for her. Years later, Scrooge and Marley offer to rescue Jorkin's company after Jorkin embezzles the company's funds; they take control of the business and add it to their own. On Christmas Eve, 1836, Marley lay dying, but Scrooge will not visit his only friend during business hours. When Scrooge finally arrives, Marley, aware he will face eternal punishment for his avarice, tries to warn Scrooge before he dies. The Ghost reproaches Scrooge for taking Marley's money and house.
